Dec 5, 2009 -- now traveling to Tortola

My mom (61) will be coming along with us. It will be her first cruise and thought it would be nice for her to meet up with some others traveling as a single. I know they have lunches and singles meets on board. I thought I read there are a few bringing their single parents.

Yes, my mom is coming along. She just turned 75 in May. She's into a slower pace these days, but enjoys playing bridge if there are enough numbers around in that category. It's more her 20th cruise or so, so she's more experienced than your mom (and me), but 1st Disney cruise.

Don't know about the events, but I'm sure we'll hear about it onboard.

We booked this cruise for 2009 when we were on another DCL cruise in December, 2007 (skipped 2008 as we went to Alaska instead.) We got the $200 direct from Disney. Then the extra $200 when we transferred to Dreams Unlimited once I got home. I believe you can't do that anymore and still get the extra OBC, you have to list Dreams Unlimited as your TA when you book the next cruise onboard. At least, that's what I'm planning to do in December.

Therefore, if we love this cruise and would love to do one again should we book while we are on the cruise. Is it a better deal to book with Dreams Unlimited then through Disney. My DH did not want to have to pay extra for someone else planning our vacation when he says he is quite capable of doing it himself. I just want a good deal and not get screwed around.

Thank you, for your help!!!

Hey! Welcome to Canada!

Dreams Unlimited is the main sponsor of this board. Apparently if you book through them, you get on board credits as advertized in banner ads at the top of this page.
We received on board credits by booking through the Disney website, not by phone.

Where abouts in Canada are you currently living? We're on the west side of Toronto in a city called Mississauga. (Actually, the Toronto airport is in Mississauga). If you're close by, maybe we'll grab a beer ahead of time.

Have a great weekend!

Thank you for the welcome!! We are currently in the city of Winnipeg. We have really enjoyed our stays in Canada over the past two summers, just not so much the weather. The people here our really friendly.

I don't think that we are close to Mississauga, but it would have been nice to meet some new people during the stay here and grab a beer. I guess it will just have to wait for the cruise.

I am going to have to check with my DH to see if we received an onboard credit because he never mentioned it at the time of booking our cruise which we did over the Disney website. Maybe he is keeping it as a surprise, but I am very curious now

Thank you again!!

I was reading on the boards that you have to be a Castaway Club Member to book exursions / palo 90 days in advance, everyone else is 75 days. We are not Club Members yet because this is our first cruise. That makes me a little sad that we have to wait an extra 15 days to book.

NEAT IDEA: I was also reading that you can hand-in a pillowcase to the front desk upon boarding the ship in a ziplock bag (with room number, name, etc.) and they will get all the characters to sign it. THAT is so EXCITING. I told my DH mom about this, and she is now embrodiering all the kids cruise pillowcases with mickey mouse cruising as a memory. She is so sweet!

How nice of her. That will be one great souvenir for the kids!

In case anyone else is interested in the pillowcase idea, I saw some really neat ones at Michael's (the arts & craft store). They had a Pirates of the Carribean picture on it that could be colored with crayons that were included. They also had Princess ones, Eeyore, Tink, and I think Hannah Montana. DD wanted the Eeyore, but since the Pooh characters are on the ship, she might get another oner. Anyway, they were $7.99 and they usually have 40% off coupons in Sunday papers.

We just visited Winnipeg last month! We were only there for the day so we didn't have too much time to see a lot of different things. We did make it to the Royal Canadian Mint (did the tour), Lower Fort Garry, and the Forks area.

We were escaping the heat of South Texas so we thoroughly enjoyed our day up there. It was warm, but nothing like the heat and humidity of Houston. I could definitely enjoy it up there during the summers but don't know how well I'd do in the winter :goodvibes

WOW! You've seen more in one day then we have seen in two summers. The only one on your list that we saw was the Forks and that is because our hotel is nearby that we can walk. Would you recommend the others?? Maybe I will take the kids one weekend when the DH is away.

I've heard about the weather in Texas, one of our friends that is here temporarily is from Texas, and she tells us all the time how her friends should send some of the heat this way. I'm definately glad that we miss the winter here!!!! Just excited that I can take the kiddies to the Beach today!!!!

We thought the Mint and Lower Fort Garry were both neat. Our little guy is 3 (isn't that the age of your youngest 2?) and he didn't enjoy the mint too much. Our daughter (age 10) did enjoy it though. Lower Fort Garry is definitely something to do on a nice day, as most of the stuff is outdoors. It's a neat way to learn about the history of the area. A good thing about both places is they have family rates. It saved us a tad (I think less than a $1 at both places), but for a larger family, it's a nice discount :goodvibes

Yes, it's definitely hot here. Even the nights are very warm. Our nightly lows have been in the mid to high 70s for the last 6 weeks or so and our highs have been in the high 90's to low 100s. Add to that high humidity and it's just so unpleasant. I know we still have at least 2 more months of it. I guess the trade off is the lack of winter. We use our winter coats probably a dozen or less times a winter here. And for some of the northerners, they'd probably laugh that we were even using them then.

Thank you for the info. I love History so we will try to check this out during our stay. My DDs just turned 3 at the end of June.

Yee Hawwww!

FYI, we haven't paid off the cruise in full yet for those who asked about that. So if you haven't received yours yet, it will arrive soon. I'm assuming that ours took so long because it had to cross the border into Canada.

On another note, from all you experienced DCL'rs, we're hoping an assumption is correct here. Our youngest DS will be almost 2.75 years old. He's doing pretty well with the potty training now and will be fully set by the time the cruise sails. He's pretty mature for his age, given his older siblings around him. I was told by DCL that if he were 1 month less than 3 and fully potty trained, that he could participate in the activities. Do you know if there is any leeway in that? It would be nice if we could drop off all 3 kids to their respective age groups and not worry about them (or baby sitting charges) and spend some quality time with my bride?

Any help would be great!
Anybody with a question of the week?

We got ours too on Saturday. I figured we got it because it is paid in full, but I guess I'm wrong. Anyway, glad to have it and can't wait for our cruise.

I'm not a veteran DCL cruiser, but I have heard that if a 2 YO is fully potty trained (which means complete independence from start to hand washing) that they can go to the kid's club. Our DS3 has been a bit stubborn with PT. He showed zero interest until the week he turned 3. DH (pediatrician) said that it was not unusual with boys and to be patient so, I was and let him start when he was ready. Anyway, did GREAT for about 2 months as long as I helped. Then, he started having accident after accident for about a month. Again, DH said not to worry, boys can be stubborn (he says mothers of boys 3+ complain about PT struggles all the time)! Now, for the last month, he's doing great again but has had trouble pulling up his pants but just got his cast off so that may be the issue. Plus, he still needs help wiping. I'm hoping we've got it down and I think we will since we've still got 4+ months. DD was a breeze, completely trained at 2 years and 3 months. DS, here we are at 3 years and 4 months and we're still working with him.

Question of the week up next~

What do plan on doing on embarkation day and what time do you plan on arriving at the port? For example, I hear that some people like to hit a park in the morning or see some things in Cape Canaveral before heading to the port in early afternoon. Others like to get to the port early to try to buy a cheaper upgrade.

We plan on checking out of Pop and heading to DTD to eat breakfast at Wolfgang Puck Express, use up any extra snack credits at Goofy's, then hit the road to the port. We hope to be at the port by 11:00 and may inquire on an upgrade to a cat 6 (we are happy with our 9 but would love a veranda if the price is right!) We are looking forward to boarding the ship as early as we can, grabbing some lunch at Parrot Cay, and then just exploring the ship before the drills.

Thanks for that Info Carmie. It would be nice to be able to relax for a while. Even though my mom's coming along too, I'd like not to have to count on her for too much. I want her to enjoy some nice relaxation (and maybe some bridge playing)

Hmm, I been changing my mind about that all the time. DW is going to go with whatever I suggest I believe, but she may veto me anyway. We're planning on staying at the CBR for 2 nights and take the DME from there to the ship as early as we can on Saturday morning. Love the chance to get onto the ship as early as possible and into our cabins and the kids into the pools. We want to experience as much as we can on this cruise and want to get there early enough to catch it all. We'll be doing our day at MK on the Friday so there will be no need for any parks on Saturday. We'll do the same as you and use up any meal credits before leaving but we're getting adjoining rooms at CBR with 4 of us getting the Disney meal plan and my mom and youngest nothing. The meal plan is more than enough for the 6 of us to eat as cheaply as 4 considering the feasts we're going to have during the cruise. I don't mind not eating at all during the first 2 days in Florida. (Ok, I need to lose the weight anyway)

In the past we've gone to AKV for the sunrise safari before leaving to drive to the Port. This time, we'll be at VWL on Friday night so we may just hang around there before heading to the ship. I don't like to get there too early because you aren't allowed on the ship right away anyway. And once you are on the ship, you can't get to your cabin until 1 pm when they do "rope drop."

Just an FYI... Although the schedule has not been released, part of the "WDW Christmas Day Parade" has historically been filmed at the MK on the first Friday of the Dec. I'm sure it's not every year, but I found quite a few recent years when it was.

Also and FYI.. I'm not trying preach to you on do's and don'ts of the DDP, I could care less what you do. But, Disney rules states that you can not share you meals with someone not on the plan (unless they are under 3). Counter service won't be a problem as they don't know who's sitting at your table and consuming your meals. However, table service might be an issue, but it might not either. If your server sees 2 Adults/2 Children on the meal plan, but 3 Adults/2 Children planning to eat those 4 meals, they may question it. They don't mind sharing if everyone is on the plan, but they'll know that's not so since the card will indicate 2A/2C. Anyway, they're not suppose to allow it, but I've read where some do allow it (and many that don't) ** I know you have 3 children but since one is under 3, he won't be an issue as you CAN share with him**

I just want you to be prepared in the event they tell you you can't share on TS. They're your credits, I think you should be able to share them with whomever you want. I've read many cases where people will buy strangers CS meals with left over credits. But TS won't be so easy to do.

Hello Tower. Last year our youngest was 2.5 years old and potty trained. The first night we brought him to the club with our 5 year old and spoke to one of the counselers for a couple of minutes. She watched him play and interact with some of the other kids and gave the go ahead for him to stay in the club and participate. You should not have any problems.
