Debt Dumpers 2021

Got the student loan down below $200k by paying another $39 today. I just wanted to be able to say that.
I’m pretty sure I’ll have to hustle my *** off until April to make sure I can pay my taxes, but I’m gonna start reading Reddit for stock tips, so it should be fine. :surfweb:

No doubt the r/wallstreetbets is getting a lot of traffic this week! I took a look myself out of curiosity along with seeing news on it.

Nothing out of the ordinary as the first month passes, a winter storm warning in the DC area where it's been rather mild the last few years, I don't expect much from this but will see what it brings. The gas station lines were rather long and seemed like some restaurant pick up lines were busy to pick up to go, and grocery store also.

I live 20ish miles south of DC and we have actual snow on the ground this morning. Rarely happens where I live. Wondering how much more we’ll get. DS17 has been going around all week saying it never snows in Maryland anymore. This morning he said “I guess it still snows in Maryland.” Lol.

I'm just south of Baltimore (literally about a mile south of the southern city border!) and we have a couple of inches already here! Outside my window is a sea of white! We did everything we needed to do outside the house the last 2 days and have no reason to leave again until work on Wednesday.

We have snow also a few inches, it's still going but really light. We are near the beltway, DCA flights still going for the most part watching as DH is supposed to travel.

Yes did the same just in case, Saturday seemed busy with the gas station and grocery store! I've been through the Baltimore many times on the highway up to NJ that tunnel always gets to me! Along with a few bridges. Happy not to travel over those on a winter day.

Well, a stroke of bad luck hit last paycheck. I had an outstanding grant from community College 3 years ago. I ended up withdrawing from classes because my PPD was really bad at the time. Long story short, apparently they had sent me paperwork to pay it back but I don't remember ever getting anything (we have horrible mail service here for the last 18 or so months). So, they're garnishing 25% of my checks and taking my taxes. It's only $2500, but it's super inconvenient to suddenly have $270 of your check missing when you weren't expecting it (I got the garnishment notice 4 days after pay day). Got taxes drafted up and between the couple pay checks before it is accepted and the refund we would have gotten, that should be done with in February. Thank goodness.

In other news, I'm pretty sure our trip to Philly for my cousins wedding in May is off the table, even if it is able to happen. I just don't think driving across the country at 8 months pregnant is a good idea, so we're going to do a small trip 2 hours away for our daughter's 4th birthday instead. Will save us a lot of money and I'm a lot more comfortable with a 2 hour trip than a 21 hour one.

Still loosely planning our fall Disney trip also. As of now, looking at staying off site near Disney Springs for 10 nights and do 6 days of park tickets (one day each park and then 2 days to decide later). We're planning on a maybe a sea world day and maybe a beach day. Hotel has a kitchenette so I'll be able to pack some food stuff for quick breakfast and lunches and snacks.

I am at the MD/PA line below Hanover, PA and it is still coming down here. I think we are up to about 2 in now. We are in the 12-18 in band. DS was supposed to get his braces on tomorrow. Pretty sure that is getting rescheduled.

My big thing this year is to get the credit card down to the point where we're paying it off every month. No small feat when we're deep into retail therapy during the pandemic and the new house keeps having issues like hey, no gutters where gutters should be (and the quotes we are getting are INSANE so we might wait until Spring to try to do that), and then we noticed our oil tank has a very small leak and that's going to be $2600 and needs to be done NOW before it gets worse.

BUT. I just put a ton of money (oh god, so much money I don't even want to think about it) on the credit card which SHOULD knock it down to under 5k. I picked up three TA jobs this semester which might kill me, but will bring in some much needed money to cover the house repairs. We're going to have to get good at patching holes in plaster and skim coating walls because I think we're not going to have the money to get these walls professionally done once we get the panels and wallpaper off, oof. Not being handy is really coming back to bite me at this point. Right before the pandemic I was getting set up to try to sell some fish extenders with pockets that could be changed out buuuuuut with all the canceled cruises I don't know if that would even be worth it to try to put an Etsy store together at this point.

Best laid plans am I right?

We have a couple inches of snow here in (lower) Northwestern NJ. Forecast is for 16-22". Topped off my tank on the way home from work on Friday and only went out for my curbside grocery pickup this morning. If work does not close tomorrow, I am going to take one of 6 days I need to use or lose by the end of February. Continue my productive weekend lol. I filed my taxes yesterday, tackled laundry, and have slow cooker meatballs & marinara in the crockpot to portion and freeze for work lunches. I will probably cook or bake some more freezer meals tomorrow.

I bet it’s cold up there! We used to go up to almost the PA border to see the boys run cross country. It was always freezing there in early November.

Looking like it’s stopped here for now. DS is hoping for a snow day or delay - yes apparently with 100% virtual snow those still exist - tomorrow.

This makes no sense. If snow days exist so students and teachers don't have to risk travelling to school in bad weather, why close virtual school? Only in the field of education...

Some districts do have teachers doing into the classroom to do their virtual teaching because they don't have the ability to do it from home. I did read one district and/or principal, I can't remember which , that said they'd still have snow days so kids could be kids and enjoy playing. Power outages can also play into it.

In my local school district, teachers were required to virtual teach from their classroom. They let them virtual teach from their homes last spring and it didn’t work. Come fall, they were back in the classroom.

Wrapping up January and making progress! Already had retirement, 529 and HSA savings on track. That is all on auto-pilot, so all good there.

Getting a few more quotes on some much needed home repairs. Should be finalizing those this week.

Vacations for the year are planned out. (Of course, anything could change with COVID). But for now we have Universal studios and house rental for March, camping trip over July 4th weekend, girls trip to gulf side of FL in July and Disney in December!

Crossing my fingers that plans (financial & vacation) will stay on track!

good for you! I did the same with student loans, would scrimp and save and out anything I had on them just to get below the “next number.” We also had over that amount at one time, and got them all gone, so here’s cheer for you and a word of encouragement— it can be done! We did it and You can do it!

where we are at they build snow days in but if they don't use them up they will end up with extra instructional days that exceed the teacher's contracts so in the case of the district we are in (which has bus drivers who for the most part are local farmers who can drive in the WORST of conditions on the WORST rutted unpaved roads-of which our district has miles of) they usually only build in 3 per school year and if they are not used by the end of february there are 3-3 day weekends in march:banana: BUT in the biggest district near us (all well paved city streets) they build in almost 10 days b/c they will call a snow day in a heartbeat-result for them is they have a 'floating' end of the school year with a 2 week period of time that they don't announce the actual end day for until late april or may:crazy2:

the rule of thumb-meet the minimum number of instructional days for the state mandate but don't exceed the maximum for the teachers.

I know right? He's got the snow day today...and very happy, especially since he's a senior and gets out before everyone else. He's a great student and has gotten into four of the five colleges he applied to (hasn't heard from No. 5 yet) so I can't really complain. I just think it's weird.
