Debt Dumpers 2020

I don’t want to encourage someone to take on more debt that already has debt. I don’t think this is helpful. What happens when the credit environment tightens? Forced deleveraging is more painful and less joyful than planned deleveraging. I’m all for joy, but I’m not going to encourage someone to take an expensive vacation who has debt, rather I’d suggest staycations or cheaper trips. Best to take it easy one year to get rid of debt to have it be much easier in the future while the economy is still good.

Seems we are not going to see eye to eye on this.

Wishing you the best of luck.

Non-budget update. I had my 7-week ultrasound today and got to see the little guy. I cried again. I have felt really nervous for the past several weeks and been very sick the past week too. Heartbeat is good and development looks good, so the fertility clinic has now released me into OB care. I have my first OB appointment in 2 weeks.
:love::jumping1::jumping1:

So excited for you! I remember that part too! It took us 5 years

How you deal with debt looks like it's different than a lot of us. There are some of us trying to death with tragedy, some of us just made bad decisions. My situation is a combo of both: my dad is dying (has 3 months left at the most) and I tried to buy myself happiness this year, knowing full well that it wouldn't work.

Try to be helpful and suggestive here. I would've left LONG ago had I received these messages. Grace always wins on this board. It's not about knowing the other person's situation, but about encouraging them to take the steps to move toward living debt-free.
I second this. This is a judgment free zone. What works for one person wont always work for someone else. Each person here shares a very very small snippet of their life and situation and we just don't know what everyone else is dealing with. Most of us are here to gain knowledge, to vent, or to share in the joy of paying off that next debt.
As the kinda-admin of this page, I just want to remind everyone that this is a safe and encouraging space. We are all here with the goal of eliminating our debts but remember that everyone's path will be different. We are all human, dealing with what life throws at us day-to-day. If someone asks for advice, feel free to provide it but remember to also give grace. And if no advice is requested, please don't pass judgment on other's decisions. I want us all here to feel free to share, gain knowledge from others and celebrate our victories in a welcoming environment. If that for some reason doesn't jive with you, then you are welcome to just stop following this thread. Thanks!
Well said. Welcome, @MermaidLagoonResident! Glad to have you here!

I didn't intent to make such waves with my post, but i guess that's what mermaids do!

I was startled by the first reply to my post, as a lurker this group always seems super supportive. I am gad to hear that this is what the group continues to stand for.

Thank you for the warm welcome and support! Looking forward to chatting more as we all work towards dumping our debts!

Hi all! Our 2020 goal is to ditch 2 of our 6 remaining credit cards, I paid off #7 a few days ago. We also want pay off the rest of my husbands student loan which is so low and should be easy. We're on a no spend unless it's replacing/upgrading something that needs it! Plus I had a baby a few months ago and he's expensive ;) ! I'm working on selling some of the things he's already outgrowing or clothes we no longer wear. Hopefully we can stick to it, our total debt is much higher than we'd like!

Hi and congrats on dumping #7! Babies are cute and squishy and grow lots and lots. You might see if there's a consignment place in your town to help offset your clothing cost for the lil man.

If it helps (helps me to see it in front of me), set up a spreadsheet to see when you are getting closer to paying things off!

Happy 2020 everyone! Wish you all a good year and to progress on meeting personal and financial goals.
@Jen and Ashwin congrats!!

I just got back home after a few days trip to Great Wolf Lodge. I almost had my first bounced check ever this week, what a ring in to the New Year that would have been. Long story how I almost messed that up, but basically involving the darn Cashapp, a request, out of town, rushed, and forgetting it wasn't linked to our main checking but the secondary checking. Luckily looked at the USAA app last night where we have our secondary checking that I write our once a month check from and noticed the balance wasn't what it should be, realized it was the darn New Year's Eve Cashapp request, and corrected the issue. Thankfully check hadn't tried to come through, and corrected issue with the instant transfer feature from other bank to USAA.

I renewed SiriusXM, which I was planning to cancel but the cancellation call offer was at my lowest I was willing to pay for a renewal at $60 plus taxes and fees for 12 months, so decided to renew. Edit*and $5 back on the Chase Freedom for SiriusXM, added that prior to making that call, so I guess not bad.

I’m still looking for ways to cut down and save more.

let's start sharing the ones that work for us..........

i bundle auto/atv/umbrella/homeowners/life with the same company to get a discount. i get an additional discount by paying bi-annually for my auto and annually for my homeowners vs monthly (did this before we paid off/it can be worked out with mortgage in place) as well as dd's renters. icing on the cake is using my insurer's no fee credit card to pay those premiums b/c they give a 3% reward (which i apply directly to the bill-so a 3% discount) which i pay in full as soon as it hits the card (i estimate i save about 15-20% in insurance premiums per year doing these techniques).

I liked ASMusic! A lot! Their food court was one of the best in all of the WDW properties. What can I say? I like to visit food courts. :rotfl2:

Lecture free from me! We finally got ours in place when I was 40. We're going to have another drawn up this year since our oldest is an adult and things have changed. You might look into a living trust versus a will, depending on the state you live in. :thumbsup2

(((Big hugs))))
Losing a parent is very hard. I think I can say for everyone here on the boards, if you need to vent, cry, talk, whatever, we are here for you. Life can be very wonderful, and it can be very hard. Hang in there.

2020 Goals:

Cash flow all of daughter's college tuition/fees/room/board/flights. No student loans!
Incur no new debt, even while I am off work without pay recovering from back surgery.
Pay off $12,000 in debt during 2020.
Earn $300 from my employer's wellness incentive program.
Sell extra car sitting on driveway -- daughter does not need a car at her university in California (and I am not sure this one is reliable enough to make it that far anyway).

Thank you all for being such a supportive group. I spent most of my posting time last year on the Parent of Class of 2019 thread as we all tried to figure out the confusing and non-transparent world of college admissions, but I read along on the entire Debt Dumpers 2019 thread. I hope by posting these 2020 goals to hold myself more accountable. Good luck to everyone on your debt dumping goals!

I can relate, (we have 17 year old b/g/g triplets). Wishing you an uneventful, very healthy, safe pregnancy followed by a quick and pain free delivery.

find out from your insurance company the cost impact of removing that spare car. we had 3 at one point and thought nothing about selling off the oldest for what we could get for it-then learned that when we removed it from our insurance we lost a multi car discount. ended up costing us more in insurance than the registration for several years of just letting it sit there would have run us (with a younger driver it can also be of value to have an old clunker to use as the one she's rated on for insurance purposes).

i just wanna chime in and say congrats!!! We had fertility issues too and our treatment ended up with a healthy baby boy 9/15/19! I found out about him a year ago today actually. I hope your pregnancy is uneventful, it’s definitely a scary thing to go through!

Thank you! We were lucky to be gifted many of his clothes and other items, honestly way more than we would have purchased ourselves. I know we have a once upon a child but I’ve heard they don’t give much. I’m trying poshmark and mercari right now. I do have a spreadsheet, I’m obsessed with looking at it and wanting desperately to delete rows of debt!

Thanks! This is actually IVF baby #2 for us. Our first embryo transfer ended up with a healthy baby girl in Oct. 2017. This is our second embryo transfer and I have been feeling more nervous than the first time, maybe because I feel like we can't get so lucky twice? So far, so good.

That's true it doesn't pay much. I've done quite a bit of consigning at Once Upon a Child particularly when my kids were smaller. Now I'm doing consigning at twice a year major consigning events with Just Between Friends and at our closest thrift store. I still donate quite a bit, too. I find consigning to be a bit of prep work though, particularly for the big consignment events, with wash, iron, make tags, delivering, etc. I'm at my last year doing these with kids they are just about in adult clothes probably in a year! Already in men's shoes for one.

I have sold a bunch of my daughter's baby clothes through Facebook marketplace. I have priced most items between $2-$5 each, depending on type of item and brand. More expensive things, such as coats and dress clothes I have priced a bit higher. I have had some decent luck that way and it is much easier to me than consignment because I just have things for porch pickup, so I never have to leave my house.

I wish I was a Facebook user for marketplace I do have letgo and offerup but I never have a ton of luck there. I just sold a big lot of gdiapers on Mercari so I’ve listed some of the brand new items he’s already outgrown.

Small win for me: some of you know that I'm a PT author. (sorry, won't release my details here...yet) Well, an opportunity came up last month for me to work with filmmakers and be paid. Just heard back this morning that I passed the first step! Hoping that I hear back sooner rather than later on this.

Woohoo!! What a way to start the new year! I will keep you in my prayers you get this opportunity and many more. Please keep us posted.

Awesome! Now, if the movie comes out you can hopefully share the movie name or the genre :)

FB Marketplace does sound much easier. Consignment selling clothes is a project, well it can be if doing a big haul.

Hi everyone. I haven't read through the last pages but I'm back for 2020. Thank you for starting this thread again. Since last year I started a full time job and we found out my husband got a 7% raise on New Years Eve so I have a lot more to work with when it comes to debt dumping. Here are my goals for 2020.

Goals for 2020:
-Post a monthly report on this thread to keep myself accountable. (In addition to my spreadsheets)
-Prepay my entire Disney trip in Feb
-Sell my house.
-Pay off all credit card debt... This is a big goal because it's a big number, but I think with my added income, and hopefully making a little off the house, we should be able to achieve it.

My big win of the day was I purchased our Florida Resident tickets about a week ago and today I saw that they released the discover disney tickets at an even larger discount. I was upset that I just purchased my tickets and even though it said no refunds on the tickets I decided to call and ask if they could be changed and they did change it for me! I will now be getting $400 back! I'm thrilled.
