Debt Dumpers - 2015

The main reason I get stressed is because Murphy always likes to hit me around this time and all the "unexpected" happens. Like you for instance with surgery and now the medical bills. I think if we could be guaranteed to get past the holiday without the unexpected events then they could be more enjoyable!!
That is so nice of your to make those snack bags! Are you able to shop at the dollar store for most of them items? I know around where I live you could get just about all those items at the dollar store - just thinking that may save you a little bit
I buy most of the stuff in bulk at BJ's so it ends up being usually less than $5 per bag. I try to get some higher quality stuff with protein, fiber, etc. instead of just junk.

DH and I talked more this weekend about my job. I have not heard back from the person who had asked for my resume that I was hoping to hear back from very soon. I did send him my resume late Thursday evening though, so I'm hoping maybe I'll just hear something tomorrow. I do have a couple other people looking for me at their companies as well. DH and I have decided that unless I have someone contact me and try to bring me in for an interview sometime this week, I am going to go ahead and resign on Friday. I just cannot take it anymore. I mean, it's 9 AM on a Sunday and I've already flat out sobbed on DH's shoulder once. This just isn't healthy, and DH and I have such a great relationship that I don't want to sabotage that by bringing home so many work problems (not that he's complaining about it, he is very supportive but I just don't want to do that to us). If someone does bring me in for an interview this week, I'll wait a couple extra days to see if I get that job before resigning, so at least that way I can have a seamless transition to a new job if I get it.

It's a relief knowing the end is in sight. I just cannot believe this is how this job has turned out for me. I guess it happens, it's just really insane. Thank you all for listening to me rant and providing all of your support. :grouphug:

You must feel some weight lifted off now. By the end of the week, one way or another it will be resolved. Hoping for all the best, keep us posted! :-)

DH is still laid off. I feel the Christmas noose tightening. I've vowed that my first priority when he gets back to work is to build a much more substantial emergency fund. This is where I differ from the experts. I need the security of knowing I have that money in place. Right now I have a stomach full of knots. Sorry to be a Debbie Downer :(

Debbie away! We don't mind. :grouphug:

I sure hope he gets something soon so you can relax a bit. And I agree with you...experts are all well and good but in the end, you have to live with your choices and should do what seems best with your money. The security is priceless. Well, I guess it isn't since you likely have a dollar amount in your mind  but you know what I mean!

Hope things turn around for you guys soon!

I would be freaking out if one of us lost our job, so please feel free to vent. I think all of us understand the stress you've got going.

Vent away. Losing a job is stressful enough, without having it happen during the holidays. :grouphug:

So sorry. My mom lost her job several years ago and was unemployed for about 4 months. It's tough, but something always comes through. Thinking of you!

So I haven't been on much because my life has been a drama!!!

So November 16 was my day off from work after working the weekend, I had plans of getting stuff done around the house & going with my aunt to her follow up oncology appt. About 45mins before I had to leave, I heard this loud bubbling noise. I ran to the laundry room & there was water & soap bubbles every where, then the toilet started gurgling in the bathroom, water came in from the laundry room to the bathroom from the hallway. Of course DH is at work, I called my aunt & had to cancel. We've had something similar happen before & it was related to tree roots. So I call the plumber & they have no openings until the next day & could not recommend anyone else!!! DH came home from work & went thru the better business burea & found someone. It ended up not being any tree roots & they was some weird stuff in the lines that the plumber never said he had seen before. The only good thing is that it was $110& cheaper than what the other plumber charged in the past.

So this just kind of put me over the edge, especially after the tree falling on my house this summer. So DH & I had been looking at VGT for DCL for over a wk & talking with our friends we made last year on the cruise. So we booked it that night & they did too!!! It's been more than a year since we took a vacation & we're in dire need. This has been a tough year & im so happy we have this to look forward to. So I made myself a promise if we went, to really work on some deep cleaning projects at home like going through drawers, throwing away or donating stuff, rearranging cupboards & my laundry room-all things I was doing until......

The following Monday am, I'm getting group texts from work that someone called in sick & our new assignments for the day. So my cell keeps getting messages, so I go to walk to the phone & not really looking, I trip & fall over the ottoman!!!! Now nothing's broke but it knocked the wind out of me, I bruised my left left & right elbow pretty bad, twisted my right ankle & hurt my back as I tried to over compensate & pull myself back from falling. Well of course I can't call off, because someone just did. So I sat down for a bit, regained my composure, took ibuprofen & went to work. It was absolutely awful!!!!! I was near tears at work, my coworker thought I was going to cry at work about recent work changes & wanted to call my boss. I didn't want to tell anyone I fell because I sound like an idiot, so I had to tell why. I do a lot of walking in my job as a hospital social worker, so it was an awful day!!! So I wasn't getting any of my projects done until the weekend after thanksgiving as I was just in a lot of pain. I was so happy as that weekend I got my tree up & decorated, & all of my holiday stuff out. So I was all geared up for more of my projects until......

The following Monday...

Backstory- were still having work done at our home from the massive tree falling on our home this summer. Our area was hit very hard with bad storms, so getting a contractor to do work (after a recovery team did emergency stuff the day of, ie boarding & tarping roof, crane removing tree, boarding broken sky light, etc) was so hard as as everyone was so busy. We found a contractor we liked & work started. Then all of a sudden, we were not getting return calls, we found out he retired unexpectedly (maybe health related type emergency) so the company had to reassign all his jobs, so now we're in the back of the list for contractor 2 who was a jerk & not very flexible, then he stopped returning calls & it seems was fired. Now contractor 3 is on task & seems good. So they're finally ready to do the plaster work in our bed room & call Monday to say they'd be out Tuesday & ask us to clear out the room.

So Tuesday am, DH & I clear out room & find MOLD!!! It's behind the dressers, so we can't see it!!!!! OMG!! So the contractor looks it over & I had a bad feeling. He says he & the owner will be out Wednesday am, he took a bunch of pics. Now we have pics of what the walls originally looked like, we did not have mold, duh. So the next day the owner pretty much says, well I don't think the molds related to the tree that fell on these vary walls (you may remember the tree fell on my bedroom while I was in bed & water came in on me in bed - of course DH was at work, we also had to have bed replaced). He said that he thinks we have a separate issue & that our water table may be high & waters coming in from outside in some small crack in the mortar that we had never seen before. He basically said this won't be covered by insurance & that they'd have to dig outside of foundation & put in a retaining wall outside!!! When I asked the cost, he said a similar job was $22,000!!!!!!!! At the end of this conversation, my DH asked if this may be related to not having industrial dryers brought in (after this was suggested by a good friend), he was shocked by this & said that the recovery team (not his company, they were sent by insurance) shouldve done that. They recovery team told us to just put fans in there & we did, we had no idea there was even another option like these industrial dryers. So he said well this may changes things, call your insurance & see what they say- he was not very hopeful. He left & I lost it, I cried for 2 hours straight.

My husband called the insurance, they did research & found that the recovery team did not bill for these industrial dryers, so we have proof!! Insurance is now expanding our claim to cover the mold damage, but of course we're now aware at the ground level there's some crack we need to care for, but this retaining wall thing may not be correct as the Mold Contractor was out & said THERES NO WAY THIS MOLD CAME FROM A CRACK OUTSIDE, ITS FROM THE WATER FROM THE TREE INCIDENT. She said theres no way with the type of brick & cement wall structure that this type of mold could come from a small crack outside!!!!!

So my home is a total disaster zone, we live in a small ranch house, so everything from my bedroom is everywhere & were back to sleeping on couches!! Which is not helping my back from my fall last week..... All my little projects are now moot, my house is a giant mess, stuffs EVERYWHERE. I just want to cry & cry. I can barely see my Christmas tree & stuffs piled in front of it. I'm just so down, my only ray of sunshine is this trip next month......

Does he do side work at home? My DH used to, it was nice money in a pinch.

You poor thing!! A vacation is definitely needed for you and your dh!!! Have you talked to your insurance company about possibly getting a different contractor? I have managed several construction jobs in my previous job - one which happened to be concrete restoration. Now if I understand correctly - you had mold behind your dresser in the master bedroom of a ranch home and the contractor saw a small crack in your block foundation - right? That crack is not going to cause you to have mold on just that one wall behind the dresser. Unless the wall sits absolutely directly on top of the cracked foundation and water is coming in through the crack and causing moisture on the wall (possible but very unlikely). Now if you said that it was the basement then that would be more believable. The plus side is that more than likely they will be able to spray and kill the mold (during a hallway renovation project we had the same issue - all the walls had mold but nothing that would make you sick).
Now the wall that has the mold - are there any pipes running through there? Like a bathtub doesn't back up to that wall that could have a leak? Do you have carpet in your bedroom? Was it soaked in the storm? If so and they didn't use dryers then I would talk to the insurance company about that as well.
So sorry to hear about this mess your going through!!

Well all the credit bureaus received my letter about identity theft and have put fraud alerts on - and I checked credit karma and it looks like all the hard inquiries were removed so that means the banks also received my letters. I did get a letter on Friday welcoming me to sprint! I had to call them and they said two phones were bought but had never been used so I'm just waiting on their letter which I should have by the first of the year. What a pain this is! It's like every time you go to the mailbox you don't know what bill your going to get.
I am guessing by the end of January if I don't receive anything else then I should be good!

Still plugging along at refinancing my house. The deadline for settlement for the locked in rate is January 5th. I'm such an impatient person and wish they would rush everything! Especially with the holidays! So fingers crossed that the under writer approves everything and this goes through. It would be a great Christmas present!

It looks like my dad will be starting radiation treatment this week which we are happy to finally get started. Hoping this all goes well.

Good to hear that the credit bureaus and banks are on the ball correcting the fraud issue. And I hope that your dad's radiation treatment goes well.

As for the bolded part, I may have just gotten really lucky when I refinanced a couple of years ago. I called to start the refinance (from that company that quickly promotes themselves as closing most refinances loans in less than 30 days) on January 2nd. My final closing didn't occur until the last half of May, but they just kept extending the rate lock for me since the delays were not anything I had control over - it was all timing between the pest inspection people, the appraiser, and the government VA loan program. Different documents would expire at different times, and it took that long to get "valid un-expired" documentation from all the different people at the same time. I don't remember offhand who you said you were going through, but I wouldn't stress overly much about the deadline.

@Angeejoe - I'm so sorry to hear about your very rough few weeks! What a nightmare! :scared1: And it was your neighbor's tree in the first place if I remember right. At least it sounds like the mold contractor will vouch for the fact that this was caused by the tree and hopefully your insurance will cover it, and the retaining wall won't be needed. Keep focusing on the wonderful vacation you have to look forward to! Hugs to you! :grouphug:

Thank you!!

@Angeejoe wow......to say you need this vacation is an understatement!!:grouphug:

I'm honestly ready just leave now & forget it all! January 23 cannot come soon enough for us!

We're a brick ranch with no basement. These 2 walls are outside walls with no pipe or bathroom running near them at all. Our bathrooms on the other side of the house. It just like a never ending drama, I'm so sick of it!

Yes it was the NEIGHBORS TREE!!! My DH brings up the trip every time I get down, so we've been talking the trip nonstop.....

Thank you all for such kind words!

Thank you all for your support. After much thought, then falling at a work event due to the negligence of a coworker (who is the BIGGEST prima donna I've ever met) I put my notice in. They told me I didn't need to finish my notice but they will pay me through Dec 31! The funniest part was when my boss couldn't stop doodling and her voice was shaking when she was asking questions about the incident and that she was going to miss me because of how great I am. It took everything I had to not laugh in her face.

So I'm currently unemployed and couldn't be happier. I wasn't expecting anything beyond working for two weeks so getting the extra weeks pay will help immensely. Between my savings, my pay checks, and the child support I receive we will be ok. I also get to spend time with DS during his winter break! This has never happened so I'm thrilled.

I did consider staying through January 7th so I could collect my bonus but I just couldn't anymore. I did the math and $1400 just wasn't enough, even for my Disney trip. Yes it's a lot of money but the tears and stress were killing me. Even Disney wasn't making it better. Worst case scenario is I delay this trip but I'm still going on a cruise as well next November. I let my new employer know I have both trips planned and haven't heard objectives yet so yay! Thanks again!

Great news! So happy for you and that you'll get to spend time with DS. I'm so jealous of your upcoming trip! I am giving my notice on Friday, but I don't think my boss will be as nice as yours. In fact, I think it's probably going to get a little ugly. I just emailed my previous boss to talk with him today about the possibility of coming back to work for him again. The only problem is I couldn't do that until next August, but I could continue doing hourly work until then.
