Debt Dumpers - 2014

How bad is the interest rate on the CC? That might effect my decision, if it's not costing *that* much every month, the cost might be worth the peace of mind of extra savings.
On the other hand, seeing how much it is costing you might make emptying short term savings more attractive. It would be pretty easy to build back up if you just diverted the old CC payments into the savings account. Normally I'm all for keeping some savings on hand, but it sounds like you have that covered through the long-term so if emergency struck you wouldn't have to go back to CCs

11.9% which in terms of a CC, not so bad but we have enough of a balance that we don't want to throw away that much each month.

I know he is right to want to do this, and I know we'll be fine but it's just my gut reaction to be nervous about it.

You could plug in the cc balance on an interest calculator and see how much interest you'll pay in the next X months (time you'd spend paying it off without paying it off with short term savings). If the interest amount is something you'd happily pay to keep your short term savings available, then don't pay off the card. If it's more than you're willing to pay, pay off the card and build up your savings with the cc min as you mentioned.

I just figured out that we can pay off our nearly $18K credit cards in 5 months!
I checked and rechecked and rechecked then held my breath and made a $1260 payment to each of my 3 ccs.

1K mini emergency fund - funded just now!
Car loan - paid off this week!
March extra cc payments - done!

I left about $500 wiggle room in our budget each month since we just moved and I still need to register our cars, pay double price for car insurance :headache:, etc. Anything that ends up being cheaper than expected will go to pay the ccs more quickly.

We "need" a little stuff for the new house (renting though so no big purchases planned) - door mats, curtains, plants, etc. - I'm selling tons of stuff on facebook so I'm thinking I can only buy new stuff with half the money from the junk I sell that I must have "needed" at one point.
The other half of the money will go toward our as-yet-undecided-upon summer vacation, plus DH's 3rd check in May will go toward vacation.

I would want to pay off the cc, jmho. It's such a great feeling of freedom to see the balance show $0. :flower3:

This is fantastic!!!!

So DBF and I broke up. Besides being broken hearted I'm completely lost. I own nothing. Everything is his. I've got to figure out how I'm going to make it on my own. I haven't been on my own in like 2 years. I haven't had to pay utilities at all since we lived together. I've still got to tell DS and I'm afraid this will set him back emotionally but I know he will be ok. I know I'll be ok eventually. I don't know where we are going to live. I've got to find an apartment.

I love this thread. It's so inspiring! :grouphug:

This. I am pressing forward as each year gets a little better. Our second car will be paid off at the end of the year and if I stick to my guns every month with meal planning and only planned eating out then all of our other debt(except orthodontist) will be paid off!

We'll start 2015 with no car payments, no credit card debt and no house payment!!!! Disney cruise ultimate vacation is on the radar for summer 2015!!!

Love hearing all the inspirational stories

I'm sorry to hear this. Is there someone you can stay with until you get it together? My sister was separated then soon divorced when my niece was just turning 1. She was able to stay with our grandmother for a while till she could get back on her feet, get some training and get a job.
Try to stay strong even when you're not feeling very. :grouphug:

 So sorry to hear this princess. We are all here for support - whatever you need (or venting support!). Maybe you could stay with someone for a while? Atleast till you find something. Is he atleast being reasonable and not kicking you guys out on the street?

Thanks everyone for the hugs. It's been awful. He's being nice and letting us stay for a while. I found an apartment yesterday in the same building as my mom. I don't absolutely love it bit it's convenient. It was a little more than I wanted to spend per month but I have on site babysitting since my mom is so close. This helps close the gap of "what do I do about school transportation". DS can walk home from now on and if I have to work late he can hang out with my mom. Friends have already offered to help us move, my sister has offered to hang out with my son while I work on moving some stuff over before the big move. Bad part of this is I spent A LOT yesterday on alcohol. Not the smartest thing to do but I needed to wallow. My sister and my dad and their spouses kept me company and tried to cheer me up playing games and even went to a furniture store to help me look for stuff. I've got 3 weeks til the big move but I get my keys in 2 weeks.

I haven't told DS yet but he hasn't been home and I don't want to ruin his weekend at his grandmas so I am waiting until tonight when he comes home. To soften the blow I'm buying him an xbox. Not something that was planned but I think it might help. He's got all kinds of Xbox games but the xbox is my ex-bf's so it's the only thing I can think of. He's got everything he needs for the new place so I've got to figure out a bed for me and a couch. My dad's gf is giving me an older tv and an entertainment center with it so I'm not going to worry about buying a TV for a while. Maybe I can get a deal on Black Friday this year. I'm hoping to get a dining set right away but I've survived without one. I can always use a folding table like I did once upon a time.

Since I plan on no social life for a while I got cable, I need some form of entertainment but I am going with AT&T since it's so much cheaper than cox. I also got $47.51 back on e-bates and 2 $100 reward cards for ordering the package I wanted. I figure the $200 will help buy what I need after I move in. Or maybe just grocery shopping. I guess the good thing is it's just the two of us now so my grocery bill will go down. Even eating out it won't cost the 2 of us much since DS usually eats a kids meal.

I am so glad I didn't just pay off my car. The money I moved to savings is really helping. This is why we all need EF's!!!!!! I'm leaving $1,000 in the bank and everything else is being used for moving/living expenses.

Thanks again everyone.

I'm sorry about what your going through. I suggest freecycle.org and goodwill stores to find any additional furniture. I take it that since you have savings you have a job. I wouldn't take on too many monthly bills until you see how things are going to add up. Just my opinion. Glad you're getting help.

That's great that your mom lives in the same building and can help you out. I can't believe how much you've gotten done already!! Just remember that things will get better!!

I have a question for all of you doing the snowball thing. When you first set out a plan, they recommend you make minimum payments on all bills except the one you're currently attacking, the one with the smallest balance.
As time goes on though, the balance on all of them lower, and then the minimum payments continue to lower also. Do you adjust your minimum payment down lower and put the difference toward the bill you're attacking or do you keep paying what you originally listed as the minimum payment?

For example, when I first started my Disney visa minimum was $132. Now it's only $99 but I won't start attacking that card until late May. So should I stick with sending $132 consistently every month? Or send $99 and send the other $33 to the card I'm paying off now?

Late May isn't very far from now but I won't start working on my other card until Oct and the last one next March. This doesn't apply to dh's truck payment of course, that stays the same throughout.

I hope I'm making sense; it's getting past my bedtime.

I did not lower my payments as the minimum lowered but that's just what work for my plan. I'm currently in my last card and just like you a car payment that stays the same.

Wow, how did I miss this?
This is great Princess! Extra nice to be close to you mom and have help from her. May I suggest looking at yard sales for furniture? Both of my kids have beautiful bedroom sets from yard sales. One was only $40 and the other was $500. These would have been much much more at a store. Spring is a great time for yard sale-ing.

Our first living room set came from my SIL's coworker who was keeping a set in storage while downsizing and sold it to us for just $200. It wasn't our style really but in good condition & clean so we made it work for us for 2 or 3 years til we could buy new.

Good luck! Extra hugs to you!!

I would do the math. Does that extra $33 speed up the debt snowball? If I were you I'd do what I was comfortable with. I'd look at the math and then decide. If it doesn't speed up the smallest card if probably leave it alone.

:

Just keep making the minimum payments on all the debts - whatever that minimum amount is (if it is lower) - and throw all extra money at the first debt in the snowball. Then, throw all payments from debt #1 at debt #2 and keep going. The debt snowball is more about changing our behavior habits.

Glad you had the Emergency Fund. Once the smoke clears from this emergency, start up the debt snowball again and don't include another BF, roommate, etc to derail you. It sounds like you have some great support from your family.
