Debt Dumpers - 2013

I'm pretty sure I won't ever be able to say it. We JUST got another hospital from my husband's surgery 6 months ago! We are already paying over $100 a month to the hospital, I guess they thought we weren't paying enough already :(

A bit more surprise money came in!

I've officially finished our first goal... $1000 in our emergency savings!! :cheer2:

And I put a bunch more money on our Visa, it's now at about $1800 which is the lowest it's been in months! WHOOT!

Update!! I have officially paid off all my credit cards :cheer2: I am out of cc debt :cool1: :cheer2: I am so happy!!!

As a reward to myself, I am looking at booking a trip to Disney at Christmas, more than likely it will be a solo trip but it has been on my bucket list for years, and this may be the year to do it!!

You all are doing such a great job on paying down your debt!!

Although I am officially out of cc debt, I still have my home equity loan and mortgage. I do plan on putting extra towards my home equity, since there is still 10 years left on it, but I also plan on celebrating with a trip!!

Fantastic - congratulations and well done! :goodvibes

We have a small amount of cc debt at 1.99% and 6 other very small debts ($2-600) that are at 0% for a limited time which I can pay off before the expiration dates. We also slacked off a bit with not paying back overdrafts immediately so that's about $1300, cut in half since last year. I'm very careful to not let my checking dip below $100 since now they charge $15 each month that it does.
We also have a dh's truck & our mortgage which we just refinanced at 3% for 15 yrs. My car is paid for.
I use a Southwest visa for everyday expenses but pay it off every month.
We have around $5k in our cushion account & put ~$1k/month in our retirement accounts.

The hard part is that we also need a roof. Not in dire need but a few years ago when our roof had a leak (into the screened in back porch) we had that section of roof replaced and got an estimate for the rest, we were told that our shingles are failing prematurely and would be needing a roof a few years. The previous owner had it installed right before we bought it but that's been 15 yrs ago. We know nothing about the roofer or warranty on shingles, etc. A section over the front porch leaks now too but still nothing into the house. We are getting estimates of $8-9000.

We do have a big trip coming this summer which we have already committed too much to turn back. (Used miles for 3 out of 4 airfares.)
Aside from some minor expenses, the trip is already paid for except the cruise balance itself which is on my Disney visa at 0% and we can pay off before the 6 months is up. (Dh gives me cash for travel for Christmas & bday gifts.)

So I entered debt info at Dave Ramsey's snowball calculator but the roof needs to come before I can start banging out the debt. There's no way to factor that into his equation.

Our mortgage payment is $130/month less than before.

Should I snowball the roof first then debt? It's the roof that has dh stressing. I pay double the minimum payment for everything except truck & mortgage so should I pay minimum to get roof $ set aside? I need to keep certain minimums that I set for myself to be done before the 0% expires but once those are done I can work more toward the roof.

We got in deep many years ago & got out by refinancing. I swore I wouldn't get out of hand again which is why we do the 0% deals. I've had multiple ones before and always get them paid in time. I don't feel like it's out of hand but don't want to start heading that way again.

We both work steady & our kids are beyond the day care/after school care years so that helps.

The kicker is that we had the roof $ before but dh preferred a new driveway instead. I disagreed since that was simply cosmetic but I lost that battle. :rolleyes2 Still, it needs to be done before it becomes a dire need with water coming inside. We would have to tap our $5k cushion to get the roof done then build it back up.

I just sent in the payments to pay off two credit cards this weekend which halved my remaining debt to around $4000 from $8000! So exciting! I am on track to be completely credit card debt free by the fall.

I hope it is okay to ask this..is it possible to attack debt and still do vacations?

Of course, it's technically always better to put every penny towards debt and scrimp and save until it's gone. But in my case, I need the vacation as a motivation to keep at my debt plan, so it works for me to be paying down debt but still going on vacation. I do Disney on a budget (staying at the values, breakfast in the room, no TS etc) and in return, whenever I feel like spending money on frivolous things, I think "you can have this, or Disney, but we're paying down debt so you can't have both" and that $ goes towards my debt. But having something to look forward to makes the scrimping and saving worthwhile, and still leaves me the majority to go towards my debt.

This what my husbands thinking for me is. He feels if I am working towards a vacay at the same time as paying down debt I will be more motivated for both! We put all of our tax return in to debt and savings and I have a side job to help bring in extra (it is comissioned and can vary month to month). He can also help out with his Dad's business over the summer and we plan to use anything from that towards debt. I have looked at figures and we spend around the same amount each year so I have a ballpark of what I need to come up with, but I also feel bad for not putting everything towards debt if that makes sense?

so totally sucks. but you WILL pay it off...just keep on keepin on. :hugs:

jess, i think a qualifying question is: how much debt do you have and how long will it take to pay off?

we do Dave Ramsey's Total Money Makeover program (best money i've spent this year!) and 'Dave says' to get intense and put off vacations IF you will be debt free in about 24 months. I know it seems like a long time but it really isn't...now when you consider you could be DEBT FREEEEEE! in that time.

If it will be 3 or more years, then I think a small vacation--on the cheap--whatever...only YOU can decide what it's worth to you. Is a week at Disneyworld WORTH the opportunity cost of paying off your car 4 months early? Is it WORTH being able to put aside some emergency money in case you have an...EMERGENCY. (and no, MNSSHP is NOT an emergency :P ). I also believe some things are more valuable than money. We are going to KY in 3 wks to celebrate my grandmother's 90th birthday. It will cost us about $1k...but my grandma is worth her weight in gold to me and I WILL NOT miss it unless i'm in a surgical bed at the hospital or dead. (Lord, I'm really not trying to tempt fate, just stating my commitment.)

Only you can decide where those lines are for you. My dh and I will be debt-free this week. It's pretty exciting. You just have to choose Disneyworld/Paris/Pago Pago or a little more financial peace.

This is something I'm trying to come to terms with myself.

I know I am the one responsible for my debt and it should be my first priority but I also know if I have nothing special to look forward to I will not be very motivated.
So.... I am trying my best to pay off debt and still planning a vacation for next March 2014,,BUT I am also planning on this being the ultimate budget vacation and not using credit to purchase any part of it.
I should be debt free by the time the vacation happens.

My debt has taught me to use credit only as a last resort.

Hugs Mel

I would not miss this for anything. Even if I were homeless, living in a cardboard box, & didn't have 2 nickels to rub together. Financial freedom is great but this it would still be worth delaying the debt freedom for another month or 2.

We definitely won't be completely debt free in less than 3yrs! We are working at it but it seems like once you have money saved up there is ALWAYS something to eat away at it! I can understand the points you are making though..to me given everything we have going on vacations at this point are ALWAYS worth it. It gives us time to get away, really relax, and enjoy just being together. We are trying to use the Dave Ramsey system in how we pay off debt and have the emergency fund but it is slightly less than $1000 due to car repairs :/

With our tax return, we were finally able to officially meet our first goal- $1000 in emergency savings! We were able to sell my car that we were paying on every month and Hubby's parents very kindly gifted him their used truck! We have 0 car payments and that feels GOOD!

Our debt consists of student loans- I have around $20,000 and Hubs has around $10,000. I am trying not to stress-we don't have any other debt (credit cards, etc.) so we should be able to pay a little more on the principal each month.

We REALLY want to vacation in a year or so, so we are squirreling away cash to hopefully fund it!

I think this is different for everyone, and depends on what type of debt we are talking about. I have had credit card debt for about 4 or 5 years. I went to WDW in 2009, knew I was in debt, and it honestly did detract from my enjoyment. After that, I decided to concentrate on focusing on getting rid of the debt, so while I did do some vacations over the last 4 years, they were very inexpensive, mostly camping. Now that I am on track for being CC debt free by September, I feel good about planning a WDW trip.

Now if we are talking low interest debt like car/student loan/mortgage, that is a different story of course.

Just wanted to provide some moral support to all of you guys. Six years ago, we had 25k+ in credit card debt, a mortgage we could barely make and two car payments.

We made some bad choices in our 20s and 30s, and have spent the last 5+ years learning to live within our means. We cut up the credit cards and didn’t use them for 4 years. It took 3 years to pay them off, and we went another year using cash/debit only to make sure we’d learned to budget. We finished paying for both cars and have until just recently, resisted the new car urge. Just last week, we traded in our 9-year old Subaru for something with much better gas mileage.

Today, we do use credit cards, but only for rewards. I’ve not paid a penny in interest in over 2 years, but have received several hundreds in rewards. I pay the credit cards off on a weekly basis, and I keep a detailed budget spreadsheet. Our savings, retirement, and DD’s college fund are all growing, and we can afford nice vacations every couple of years. I can’t explain the peace of mind we have, knowing we finally have financial security.

Keep going….you will get there!!

That's awesome!! I went 4 years without credit cards. I just got a new cc last month to help build my credit score. I feel more in control now than I did even last year. For some reason, having a CC is scary! lol

Thanks!! I think I am ready to take the plunge and book! Part of me is dreading going solo, but another part of me is happy. I did a solo trip years ago to Vegas, was with friends for a couple days and then stayed on solo. And I am an absolute Christmas fanatic, so I don't think it will be too bad going solo.
