Debt Dumpers - 2013

Not a debt payoff, but I did get a raise yesterday. We hadn't gotten one in 2 years. It is just a little more than what Iost when the payroll holiday expired, so it doesn't seem like much, but every bit helps. It is enough to buy diapers for the month!

Congrats on getting a raise!!

Just had a kink in plans- my tax refund didn't come so I called my accountant. My claim was rejected because my ex claimed one of our daughters. I had the accountant send it through without her on it and it reduced my refund by $2000.

I then called a family law attorney because the ex is about $15k in arrears on child support. I will also be filing a due process against our dhr for not enforcing the order. If he filed taxes, he had income- why wasn't it garnished and/or why wasn't the refund taken as payment for his back child support? Me and my husband support the kids and him doing this and taking the deduction we are entitled to just shows what a loser he is. What a slap in the face.

Thanks for letting me vent!!! We see the lawyer on Tuesday. I hope he rots in jail!

Sorry to hear this! If he claimed your child, the taxes should've come to you for the back child support he owes!! I hope everything goes well for you on Tuesday. I would take him to court for that amount being in arrears!!

i am a student of Dave Ramsey's (only since Feb 11) and i am already feeling so much better. I used to pretty much pay the bills and hide from dh what our real situation was. I now have a budget and a financial plan and dh and i are both on the same page.

we are following (loosely, albeit) the Baby Steps. We have paid off 4 cards and half of another. We are taking a huge disbursement check and putting it in our Catastrophe Fund. By September we will be working on paying off our house in 5 years.

I can't wait to get some more $$ in the bank so I can pay off the other cards and get rolling on our back taxes.

Have you all seen this? I saw this on another thread. I'm going to try it and see how well I do. Seems like it's easier to do it in reserve though. I don't have that much money to spare around the holidays!

Iv been doing the saving plan. I have about $80 saved. I'm skipping around depending on my budget. Iv been paying off a few credit cards. I have 3 other cc to pay off this month so next month I will be able to save dec high amount. May I will save nov savings amounts . Then June Octobers. I don't work in the summer so that when I will save the lower amounts. I love this plan and its extra $$$ I wound not have had
so I hope to do this plan every year

Joining in on this thread as I try and get our debt paid down as quickly as possible!
We have one CC that I used for our DD's wedding expenses (she got married this past July) and various other things on it. As of the end of March it will finally be paid off:cool1: I am so excited! We only have one other cc that we use to charge gas each month...but ALWAYS pay it off monthly.
Once I pay that 1st cc off our money will then go towards dd's college loan we took out. I have been paying the minimum on it and feel like it will never get pd off. We will probably have that paid off in 3 months (there is about $3000 on this loan).
Afterwards I will roll the money from that into paying down our equity line. We have about $10,000 on that.
We will also have our van paid off in June:cool1: and would love to put that on the equity line, but we have decided to give DD and her DH that monthly payment for a while to put towards her student loans.
I was shocked when her loans kicked in and her payments are $350/mo for 10 yrs:eek: They are putting extra money towards it each month, but wow.....
DH wanted to help them out for a bit.

I always take $75 a paycheck and put in the Christmas savings account so we have that money at the end of the year.
My cc payment money has been our vacation monthly fund for quite some time. I would put $400 each paycheck towards vacation, but with dd getting married all that money has been going to the CC for quite some time. We were able to take a WDW vacation this past Oct (budget-offsite and YES tickets) thank goodness. Our next wont be till June 2014.
Vacation money goes to school loan then equity line.
Someday I would love to have no house payment...but that is a long way off!

You are doing a great job!! Sounds like you have your plan in place :thumbsup2 I plan on putting extra towards my home equity loan once I get my cc paid off. And I plan on putting money into a vacation fund, because I am taking a vacation next year!! I don't know where, but I am going somewhere!! That is a gift to myself for getting out of debt :thumbsup2 (even though the equity loan and mortgage is debt...I consider it a 'normal debt' :lmao:)

We seem to have around $1500 each month that we have spent that is unaccounted for. Our overdraft last month was shocking and we have now started to enforce a strict budget for the next few months. $600 on food for the whole family of five plus our wee dog each month is a challenge but I will enjoy the challenge. Then $900 on other necessities, clothes, household items, etc. it is hard and I have annoyed everyone by noting down everything we spend, however I think we need to. We have been overdrawn for years and now we have a great plan for getting completely debt free by this December! :)

We have already saved $400 this week by only buying what we truly need. It's our food bills that are shocking. In December we spent almost $2000 on food. Ridiculous.

Does anyone have any good ideas for keeping track of money and setting budgets? I'm kind of stuck on where to begin.

I think that tracking your expenses like you have started is a great start! This way you will be able to see where you need to cut spending. I do have to ask, what in the world did you guys eat in December to spend $2,000 :lmao:My goodness!! You say that your putting a budget of $600 for the month on food, and $900 for other necessities. What are you including as other necessities for $900? I am taking it as gas for the vehicles, but does it include any other bills? My first thought would be to cut out spending on clothes each month.

I know right, $2000 on food is ridiculous! I guess we bought too much turkey, lol. We are impulse buyers though, we say 'oh, we need bread' then head out to the shop, buy bread and then a load of other things we don't need! Lol!

The $900 is putting aside gas money, and all the 'regular' bills we get each month, like the mortgage, electricity, insurance, etc. So the $900 is for things like clothes, days out, household items, unexpected bills, etc. I have set a budget of around $300 for clothes each month, which it seems we don't spend on clothes! So I have no clue what we spend the $300 on in the first place, haha. I suppose it's hard to set budgets when we don't know how much we spend on everything. All I know is that we have spent more than we have coming in, but with a bit of planning, I am hoping to turn that all around! :)

Do you have teen boys? My 11 & 13 year old boys could easily eat that much.

The first thing I would do is put down what my monthly income is. Then put down what the monthly bills are. The mortgage, electric, etc. Budget the $600 a month for food, allow yourself the gas money for cars. Once you have all of that listed, then see what is left over. You can then determine how much extra you can put towards your cc bills.

So, I haven't been able to pay down more debt yet but I found a way to cut monthly expenses. Since I am living with family members, I was able to drop my renters insurance which will save me about $17/month. I also called my cell phone company and switched to a plan that will better suit our needs and that will save me about $70/month. Yay for freeing up more money to go towards debt!

Wow! I just read all 38 pages, 557 posts. Everyone is doing a great job.
I'd like to jump aboard the debt dumpers train.
We have 2 CC were working on that should be paid off by July. It would have been sooner but murphy hit and DH's transmission needed to be replaced, so that was $3600. :sad1:
My student loans will be paid off in August and by then we'll owe less that $4000 on my van. Before we pay off the van, we are going to spruce up our emergency fund and take a vacation with my mom and her hubby to Disney. My mom has never been so we're very excited to introduce her to the mouse. After we spruce up our EF, We'll do some updates to the house and work on paying off our mortgage. Good luck everyone.

Sounds like you have a great plan in place!! Hope you guys have a great time in Disney!!! I still would like to go to Disney at Christmas to see all the lights.

So far in the first 2 months of this year we've paid off $1,191 and are on track to pay off 1 credit card this month with our income tax return helping with that. It will be so freeing to not owe on our credit cards! Keep up the good work everyone-I love hearing your success stories.
