Debit Cards

We always use credit cards at WDW, but dd and her bf have been asking about debit cards. The cards in question are:

Barclays Visa Electron (bears the words Visa Electron on the obverse, but not the standard Visa symbol; and Plus on the reverse);

First Direct (bears the Switch, Cirrus and Maestro symbols).

I know what the providers claim, but does anyone have any experience of actually using them?

hi, i used my abbey card which has a cirrus symbol on it, at a cash point in the marketplace to withdraw cash and had no problems, i didnt use to buy anything though, reading your thread again i think you mean using in shops? sory if i have got it wrong susie

I've definitely used my debit card successfully in Florida before (Visa Debit) but unfortunately it was not one of the types you mention.

Not sure if that helps or not really, sorry.

We have used Visa Electron to withdraw money from cash machines with no problems at all.

Yes, I've used one successfully to withdraw cash from an ATM, but never tried to charge purchases.

Eldest DD had the same potential 'problem', as she had only a debit card to her name, so I applied for another credit card with her as an additional card holder. In reality, she is the only one who uses the account, but the bills come to me (and then she gets the thumbscrew treatment until she pays up ). Not an ideal solution, but it works for us, for now.

Debbie, have never used it to withdraw cash, just to make purchases. In Costco, no problems, seem to remember I had to enter my pin number though.
