Debit card at check in

Sorry. I agree about using a CC for holds on rooms, car rentals, etc. I was just questioning not using them in restaurants. I gave a Visa debit card and - for more than a decade - I have been using it in restaurants.

Still bad, lets say the number gets stolen (restaurants are one of the number one locations of credit card theft), do you want your cash frozen while they work to resolve the issue?

Legally, your maximum liability for a debit card is $50 if you notify your bank within 48 hours, it then goes to $500 for I believe 45 or 60 days, after that, there is no limit. Credit cards have a maximum liability of $50. Now some creditors/banks have slightly better terms, but again, your locked cash versus credit, big difference in terms of handling most obligations.

My biggest issue with banks and debit card fraud is once I had an unauthorized transaction pending in my account, it took away from my available balance and bounced a check. I called the bank to dispute it and they couldn't until it actually posted to my account.....6 days later!!!! In all that time it tied up my money even though I caught it the day it happened.

As others are saying, If your debit card number is used fraudlulently, it will cause you a lot more headaches than if it were your credit card. If you really want to use a debit card for spending, do what I do: I got a second checking account at my credit union (and a debit card) and I only transfer money to that account as needed. That way, if someone uses my card, the damages are limited and my "main" checking account cannot be temporarily drained, bounced checks, etc.

So, I'm guessing that pretty much no one here uses his or her visa check card except as a PIN- debit?

What do you use it for? I mean what's the point of having it, if everyone is afraid to use it?

Setting up a secondary/special account just for debit purchases? Wow. :confused3

I use mine just like I did when written checks were accepted. Most places would not accept out of town check.

I use mine locally where I can use it as a PIN-debit.

I have a credit card specifically for travel. That way I can monitor very easily any transactions.

The main problem with using a debit is if there is a mistake you could be out that money immediately while disputing the claim.

Disney resort made a mistake once and when we checked in instead of a balance of $200, the CM said it was $2000. It took over a week to settle it. While that was going on I would have hated to have $2000 out of my checking account, as 3Minnies1Mickey it could lead to bounced checks.
