Debbie’s Watermelon Trip Report – Day 3

Cast of Characters: Debbie (Me), 21, full time college student, part time nanny.

After another late night last night, I awoke at 6:00AM. Despite my attempts to fall back to sleep (I’ve had two straight 18+ hour days), I was wide-awake. So I got out of bed a few minutes after 6:00, showered and dressed. I headed down to Tubbi’s to fill up my mug and came back to the room. For the second straight morning, I enjoyed a breakfast of Pop Tarts and Sprite on my balcony (hey – I’m on vacation!).

After a slow morning, I got out of the hotel just after 8:00 and headed towards the Animal Kingdom. We arrived at 8:30 and already the line was well past the ticket booths. I knew this was a bad sign – this has been my first experience with crowds so far. My plan was to head straight for the Safari, but, after seeing the crowds, my plans changed quickly.

After park opening, I did some browsing in the Island Merchantile and headed in to Camp Minnie-Mickey. I wanted to arrive early for the first FOLK performance, as I knew it was going to be packed.

I was the first one at the theater (watermelon!), and, as a result, got a great seat. We were let in at 9:45 (the show started at 10:15), and I was directed to the front row in the giraffe section. Double watermelon!

The show was amazing as always, and, as I was leaving, I started planning the rest of my day. I debated getting lunch at the AK, but, after seeing the crowds, I decided to head back to the Dolphin and grab a bite there.

I returned back to the Dolphin at 11:30, grabbed a tuna salad sandwich from Tubbi’s and enjoyed lunch again from my balcony. I then headed down to the resort’s gift shop to pick up some film I had dropped of on my way to the AK this morning. I was really anxious to see how my Off Kilter photo turned out!

After picking up the roll of film ($13.25 for one set of 24 exposures – ouch!), I took a walk over to Epcot (where else?). I immediately headed over to the Canada stage to grab an early seat – it was only 12:45, but even Epcot was crowded.

I rushed to open the photos, and was extremely surprised to see that the Off Kilter photo had turned out very well! Much better than the last one I had taken that was ruined by stage lights. My third watermelon of the day!

So, I made a quick call home from my cell phone to share the good news, and, by then, it was time for the first Off Kilter performance. What can I say – these guys are awesome! If you have a chance to see them, please do! Not only are they great performers, they are also great people as well. I had a chance to speak with them in between their shows both yesterday and today, and they are great people! My plan for tomorrow is to find a place to have the photo enlarged and have them all autograph it. I hope I can find a place on property that will enlarge it!

After spending time talking to Tony and Randy (Off Kilter’s keyboard player and lead guitarist), I headed over towards Italy to catch Masquerade, but got sidetracked when I bumped in to a CM I used to work with at TDS. What a surprise to see her!

After the brief visit, it was time to head back to Canada. I told you that I’d be spending most of my time there!

Rather than bore you with Off Kilter ramblings, I’ll just speed up until 6:00. By this point, it was getting rather windy, and I had a decision to make. My plan was to head over to Germany for ToD, but it won’t run in the wind. So, I could either stay for Off Kilter’s 6:00 show and hope that ToD is cancelled like I predicted, or I could hope that the winds die down and head over to Germany. After a quick debate, I decided I’d stay at the Off Kilter show until 6:15 and make a mad dash over to Germany. That way, I could see at least part of OK’s show. If ToD would be cancelled, I didn’t miss the whole thing, but if ToD ran, I wouldn’t miss it by leaving OK’s show early.

As it turns out, I made the right decision. As it turned out, ToD ran, despite the wind. This is a first for me! Sometimes if it’s only slightly windy, they’ll modify the parade and eliminate some of the more dangerous puppets, but the show went full force today! I was really surprised.

Come 7:00 when ToD ended, I was starving – I hadn’t eaten anything since that sandwich at 11:30. So, after a quick restroom stop, it was over to the American Adventure for a turkey club. Nothing exciting, but it was nourishment, and it was within my diet guidelines.

Back to Germany I go. I bump in to a ToD CM friend, and it was great to see him again. Although we correspond via e-mail, I haven’t spoken to him face-to-face since August, and it was great to finally speak to him again. Watermelon!

ToD ended a little after 8:30, and it was a quick walk back to the Dolphin to watch the fireworks. With a bad ankle, it’s not easy to walk this quickly! I just made it back to the room as the fireworks begun. Watermelon!

Which leads me to where I am now – writing this trip report. What a long day! Hopefully tomorrow I’ll actually be able to sleep in? Stay tuned for Day 4 of the Watermelon Trip Reports!
