Debbie’s Watermelon Trip Report Day 2

Cast of Characters: Debbie (Me), age 21

After a long day yesterday, I was surprised that I awoke wide-awake at 6:30AM. I got up, showered, and called home at 7:15AM – something I forgot to do yesterday. After speaking to my family, I took my Dolphin refillable mug down to Tubbi’s, filled it with Sprite, and came back up to the room and ate some Pop Tarts I had brought from home.

After a most nutritious breakfast (which was eaten on my balcony facing the Swan – watermelon!), it was time to head over to the Disney-MGM Studios. I got there at 9:00, just as they were opening. My first priority was to head to One Man’s Dream, which is something that I’ve missed in previous trips. I spent a good deal of time there, and could have spent more. I am a huge Disney history buff, and so that made this attraction all that more important to me.

Finally, I drug myself out of there and headed over to the 10:00 Voyage of the Little Mermaid show. I have seen this show many times, and I could tell there was a difference in both the voices that were used during the show and the choreography. They’re subtle differences, but obvious to people that have seen the show before.

By this time, I was itching to clean out my e-mail box, as I knew it was full, so I came back to the room. I spent about 30 minutes on-line, and was happy to clear out all that junk mail. 60 e-mails in 2 days, and only 5 of them were from people I knew!

It was then time to make my way over to Epcot (where else?). My intentions were to catch the 12:55 performance of Masquerade as I have some friends that perform in the show, but when I saw the crowds in World Showcase, I decided it would be best to head over to Canada and get an early seat for Off Kilter. I knew I would be seeing later Masquerade performances, and Off Kilter is a top priority for me (it is tied for number one priority along with ToD). So, I bought a margarita in Mexico and headed over to Canada.

I had about a half an hour to wait before the show started, and, in the meantime, I started talking to a woman, Janis, who is friends with the bagpipe player in Off Kilter. She is a very friendly, sweet lady, and I really enjoyed talking to her.

At this point, I need to stop and point out a piece of background information. I just “discovered” Off Kilter in January, and have become a huge fan. The day before I came home in January, I began talking to Randy, the guitar player in Off Kilter, following one of their shows. I told him that I am a fan, and would love to have my photo taken with the band. However, the rest of the band had already went backstage, so I couldn’t have a group shot taken then, but if I come back following their next show, he’d make sure the band stuck around. So, I did, and had a photo taken with Off Kilter. Unfortunately, the stage lights ruined it, and part of the picture (read: one of the Off Kilter band members) was completely red. So, my beloved Off Kilter photo was ruined. I was really hoping that Randy would remember me so that I could ask him for another photo.

Okay, back to the trip report. Randy was the first one out on stage, and he saw me sitting in front of the friend of Jamie’s (the bagpipe player), and he says to me, “Long time no see!” It had only been what, two months? J I was excited that he remembered me, and was about to ask him for another photo when he turned his back and started tuning his guitar. “Watermelon!” I thought. I’ll have to catch him after the show, though, to get the photo.

After the show, no sooner had I pulled out my camera and stood up to approach the stage, he (along with the rest of the band) was off the stage and talking to Janis, the friend of Jamie’s. Randy stepped aside and started talking to me, and I asked him if it would be too much trouble for another photo? I told him about the first one, and he was surprised that it didn’t turn out. They lined up along the edge of the stage, and I kneeled down in front, and got another picture take. Lets hope this one turns out!

After talking with Randy a bit longer about his recent vacation, they had to head out. I at this point was really tired (the long day yesterday had really caught up to me), so I just stayed put until their 3:30 show.

Another background piece of info here: another Off Kilter fan (also named Debbie) had asked me to call her during one of their performances so that she could listen in on the show. So, at about 3:25, I pulled out my cell phone and gave her a call. She was really excited to hear them perform, and I was happy that I could let her listen.

By the time I had gotten off the phone with her, there was no time to do anything before the next Off Kilter show (I told you this was a top priority!), so I again just stayed put. I stayed for their 5:00 show (you have not lived until you have heard IASW played on bagpipes!), and then headed over to Italy for the 5:45 Masquerade.

I “ran in to” two of my CM friends, and “spoke” to them. The CM’s in Masquerade are not allowed to speak because they are in full costume, so it I pretty much limited the conversation to yes and no questions. I knew I’d be seeing them later this week, so I wouldn’t have too much of a “conversation” with them while they were performing. Watermelon!

I headed over to Germany after Masquerade, pulled up a bench, and waited for ToD to start. What a show! As always, it was fantastic! Please see this show if you haven’t already seen it.

I was starving at this point, as the margarita and Pop Tarts had been my only food consumption for the day. So, I went to the American Adventure and had dinner – a chicken sandwich. After my last two days of eating, it felt good to have some “real” food! I’m trying as hard as I can to stick to my diet (I’ve lost almost 20 pounds since January 1), so this was not the most healthy thing to have, but it was an actual meal!

After eating, it was back to Germany. On the way back, I bumped in to Disney Daniel and his family. We talked for a while, and then pulled up a piece of sidewalk in front of Germany. After a 5 minute delay due to winds, ToD began at 8:15. Daniel was “hugged” by the mother and baby puppet, which he wasn’t expecting. I knew the puppeteer doing that puppet, and I should have seen it coming – he loves to catch people by surprise!

After the parade ended, Daniel and I said our goodbyes, and I headed back towards the International Gateway while Daniel and family stayed there. I made it back to the room just as the fireworks began, and watched from my balcony.

Finally, here I am! Following fireworks, I sat down to write my days adventures now so that they won’t slip my mind in the morning. What a great day it has been! A definite watermelon day as a whole! I now need to get that Off Kilter photo developed (will be done tomorrow morning), and I’ll be all set!

Up next: AK or MK? Will I wind up in Epcot? Stay tuned!

We saw Off Kilter for the first time in February, they are fantastic. Like you, nothing was too much trouble for them, they autographed my 5 year old's book and answered all her questions!!
