debate: democracy vs. totalitarian/repressive regimes

it seems like the united states has been trying to push democracy on other countries for a long time now. but what happens when we get a country to accept democratic government and then their citizens vote in extremist (sometimes even terrorist) groups? do you believe in true democracy or do you think some groups should not be allowed to be voted into office?

Looks like the current way to handle it is to just not consider them a true democracy. Only a democracy we agree with is a true democracy.

Another wrinkle is that the supposed true democracy, the one pushing it on others, is not a true democracy.

I think that much like the word "conservative" the word "democracy" has taken on a new meaning.
I don't consider it a true democracy because the change was forced on the people in the first place.
I think the country has the right to vote whomever they wish into office if done by a majority vote. I think an elected repressive regime is the risk we take when we go in and put democracy in place in hopes of ousting another type of repressive regime. Especially when we go in without the consent of a majority of its people.
