Debate-Bootleg DVDs

We could split hairs until the cows come home...it really boils down to your own personal level of moral bankrupcy...so to speak. Some people think nothing of taking a pen/paper etc from the office...they consider it a 'perk'. Yet they wouldn't dream of just taking a package of bic pens or a ream of paper off the shelves of Office Depot. One person would never blow off a red light, but exceed the speed limit on a regular basis. Both are unlawful acts and that, in itself, could be deemed immoral behavior.

If we were all honest with ourselves, we all have taken something that is not ours, on one level or another. We have all broken moral codes on some level or another.

It all boils down to a personal level of 'wrong'. And how big that wrong is in the scheme of things.

The OP asked "How horrible is it to borrow bootleg DVDs?"...my answer is not very horrible.

MHO - If nothing else, it sends the wrong message to the kids.

I vote "NO" on this one.

Well, my kids have no idea that the Dvds are bootleg so no message is being sent here!:D

Bootlegging = theft

"Borrowing" bootleg DVD's = abetting & encouraging theft

LOL! My 21 y/o DD is the one providing me with bootlegs. She gets them from her boyfriend. And for the record all of them have looked great except for one that had someone walking in front of the camera for a second. Guess I raised a heathen!

A very good friend of our family runs a projector at a theatre where we live and man does he have a collection of movies some really great movies some well lets just say I wouldn't have wasted the tape to mae the original or the DVD to make a copy of it lol. Dmadman always uses the car questrion as his big comparison on this. As I have said before if recording artists are really being hurt that badly maybe they should start offering the music on their on website and charge less for it and sell more music. Movie companies could do the same sell a high quality downloadable version of thier movies for far less than putting it on a DVD it is a win win for them that way. First it would cut down on manufacturing and publishing costs no media to buy to make the DVD's and it goes direct to consumer no middle man trying to get their part of the pie. Mind you as I had stated earlier the courts here in canada ruled it to be LEGAL yes you got it LEGAL to do this so I have no problem anyhow LOL.

Until you start multiplying it by millions (of people doing it). For those that think it's okay, let's not hear any complaints about the price of movies or DVD's when it comes time to "buy" them, like you all say you eventually will (uh huh, sure!)

I've already stated the movie and music industry need to find a solution. But, until then, it is theft, at least here in the capitalist society of the USA.

Okay, I won't use cars. How about books? Is it okay for me to go to the local Barnes and Noble, steal a book, head over to Kinkos, make copies of it, and sell it for cheaper?

Illogical examples. None of those are depriving people of income.

having worked in the Film and television industry....I know that the people suposedly "victimized" by bootleggers are certainly not getting such a raw deal...so I dont really feel bad for them.

And it wont honestly affect DVD prices unless its happening at an incredibly high rate (which it's not)...unfortunatly..the people running the movie industry are much more immoral than people who would use a bootleg....because they will use any excuse (justified or not..) to up the prices we pay...i know this for a fact...I've sat in on the meetings....its all about the almighty dollar...

I don't use them..mostly because I get the movies I want for free through my movie connections....i know people who do..and dont think they are bad people for it.

Well speaking of books Dmadman we can go to our public library and grab a book from the shelf and use the supplied by the library photocopier to copy it the entire thing if we wish so again bad analogy.

So for those that wish come on over to Canada go to the public library sit your butt down bring a USB storage device and download to your hearts content LOL.

Not only that but when I was a Senior in high school a friend's mother was the manager of the local book store. When it came time to ""do away"" with the books they would rip the front and back cover off and throw them in the dumpster.

She would always bring boxes and boxes of books home and let us go through them.

Illegal things are happening everywhere........there is a HUGE difference in bootlegging movies and murder or stealing zillion dollar cars.

OH and I've downloaded from Kazaa too!

Sorry double post. Mind you another analogy that he could use is software/gaming. My mother works for a game developer programming company and it is owned in part by EA (Electronic Arts) when it comes time to maret the games on any format be it PC PS2 X Box etc they build in a certain ammount of margin to offset the cost of what inevitably ends up as pirated software. I have not paid for a PC or X Box game in years and neither have any of my friends it is great when the company will supply me with master copies LOL.

Believe what you want, we own (as in... bought in a retail store) over 500 VHS/DVDs. Bootleg DVDs/VHS movies are not going to change our buying practices. We like the extras that come with retail DVDs. If we like a movie, we buy it. I have no complaints with the cost of DVDs/VHSs.

The irony is that I have ended up buying every DVD of movies I originally saw on a 'bootleg copy', with the exception of one...X men..

Again, multiply it by millions and I'm not sure EA would continue that practice.

That's great. You are an exception to the rule. I rather doubt those that are plying the bootleg trade are doing it as a sampling service, however.

Still not the same thing. Did you make copies of those books and sell them to your friends? That's the difference.
