deathly afraid of "drops" on coasters... which ones would be okay?

I don't like big drops and Splash Mountain was too much for me as well. I can do Space Mountain(it's nice because it's dark so you don't know there is a drop until it's over), BTMRR(the drops are barely there at all), and Expedition Everest(the drop is curved and I don't get that stomach drop feeling). At Universal, I do Revenge of the Mummy--the roller coaster part is like Space Mountain. I also do Forbidden Journey in IOA--but I wouldn't if you get motion sick.

I am 46 and would love to do some roller coasters with my daughters this year (they are 7 and 8, and over 48") . Which might you recommend?

Here are the ones I have tried: ToT was so awful when I tried it, I will never do something like it again, I wanted to die (literally, how awful LoL) . Splash Mountain was pretty bad... I could do it again if I *had* to, but it was really pushing my limits greatly. On the other hand I loved RnRC! No big drops bit lots of thrills!

I have not tried any others... would especially like to know about MK and IoA/US coasters (1st time at darkside, though spending most of our time at WDW). Any input on what to try and what to avoid would be wonderful. I want to be a FUN mom as much as I can!

Thanks, Barbie

The drops on ToT and Splash Mountain are very different experiences than drops on fast coasters. They both give you so much time to anticipate the drop that you get very anxious and tense up. I won't to ToT and white knuckle it through Splash but I love all the coasters in the parks. Where you sit on some of the coasters makes a difference too. You generally feel the ride a whole lot more in the back of the train.

I am NOT ALONE! LOL. It is so good to hear that I have some options (especially at MK). Thanks for giving me the confidence to branch out more. I am putting all of these onto my planning spreadsheet :-) My girls will be delighted....

Glad to see this asked, because it's a big issue for me! Though in my case it's not so much that I'm scared as that I'm scared of what my stomach will do...

I totally respect all of you who are afraid of drops and all of that stuff but I was at Hershey Park this weekend, and OMG, the "thrill rides" at Disney are walks in parks compared to what i saw this weekend. There was this thing called Sky Rush where we literally thought we were going to get killed.it had "air time", which means you are out of your seat and in the air (with safety bar) during the ride. We named this ride the Big B#*ch. and it was!

Disney's coasters are fairly mild and the good thing is that Disney would never kill you........I hope.........I'm not so sure about some other parks I've tried.

For years I wouldn't ride anything with big drops, but I have been trying a lot more recently- I've actually ridden everything now at Disney, including ToT which I never thought I would go on in my lifetime. Honestly, most of the Disney coasters are pretty tame. I was just like you with RnR- I didn't mind it because it had a launch at the beginning vs. a drop. I was always fine with BTMRR and Space Mtn also. They have small drops throughout, but nothing big. With Space you can't see much, so by the time you realize what's happening it's over. EE might be one to stay away from, but it is a really smooth ride and the drop kind of sneaks up on you. Still, if you don't like Splash it may be one to stay away from.

Haven't been to Universal in years, but most of the rides there are more intense than Disney, including the coasters. Flight of the Hippogriff should be okay, I went on that before it was themed to Harry Potter- it's similar to BTMRR in the type of drops it has, and I think it's meant to be more of a family coaster. I've never been on any of the other coasters there because they intimidated me too much. If you don't like Splash you probably wouldn't want to go on the Jurassic Park ride.

I also do not like the big drops but I have ridden everything at WDW except RnR and ToT. I did Splash Mtn and EE (rode it twice in a row) on the same trip a few years ago. I will never do Splash again - not only did the big drop get me good but there was a smaller drop in the dark that I did not expect which freaked me out prior to the big drop. EE again maybe, but I haven't since - I actually think the backwards part was the worst of it! I could never do ToT. It is interesting to hear that there are no big drops on RnR. I will have to check that out.
I love BTMRR, its my all time favorite roller coaster. It took many years to get me on Space Mtn - I was just so afraid of being in the dark, not being able to see any big drops if they were coming. DH dared me on one of our recent trips and DS9 stepped up to ride it with me and so off I went. We loved it! There are really no big drops and it really mostly has tight turns and it feels fast although I think it actually is not. I can also do Barnstormer and Primeval Whirl.

DH and I went to DL last October and rode Pirates there. Everything I read said that there were no drops. Little did I know that they added two in the refurb. I had to sit down for ten minutes before my heart settled down. They weren't that bad, but I didn't know about them and it scared the heck out of me.

I can't ride Space Mountain. My mom and I rode it in 1987 and it broke down on an incline. Up until that point, it probably wasn't that bad. However, they had to turn on the lights and we looked around and then made the mistake of looking down. Saw the line of people waiting to get on. Nope, never again.

i think that you would be fine doing...

Thunder Mountain
Space Mountain
Rockin Roller Coaster

No go on....

Expedition Everest
Splash Mountain (even though its my favorite) :)

well at US say away from rip ride rocket and hulk at IAO... the mummy is okay and doesnt have that big of a drop

EE doesn't give me a stomach drop sensation, and I'm pretty sensitive to them.

EE looks like it has a big drop, but because it turns, it doesn't feel like you're falling.

Totally agree. I stay away from Splash, but I can do EE over and over. It turns before you get that sensation and man is it FAST! I love that last part :-)

If you don't like Splash, do not ride Rip Saw Falls at Universal. The drop is a lot higher. Personally, I think it's the best flume ride I'd ever been on, but it doesn't sound like you'd enjoy it.

Ha! I live in PA and visit HersheyPark a few times a year. We refer to Skyrush as "Thigh crush" because of that stupid restraint. That is the only coaster at Hershey that I refuse to ride again. I think I would have loved it if the restraint were a shoulder harness.

ToT is a rollercoaster? :confused3

Besides ToT and Splash Mountain, there really aren't any drops at WDW.

RnRC, as you said, doesn't really have drops.

Space Mountain has maybe one drop, but none of it is about intense drops. It's more slinging you around turns. The one drop it has isn't that bad, and it's in the dark so by the time you realize it's happening, it's over.

Expedition Everest has a drop, but you're going so fast, I never actually get to 'experience' the drop, I feel like. I keep waiting for the intense drop feeling, and after it happens, I'm like "Wait, did we just do the big drop?". It looks a lot worse from the ground.

I hate rollercoasters and drops. Not into drops, not really into rollercoasters, but I love all of Disney's. They're just a different kind of rollercoaster.

Actually, from a person who does not enjoy drops much, I remember at least 3 drops on Space, not just one.

I was deathly afraid of EE, because from the outside, it looks like the big hill you go up leads to the hill you do down. I assumed it was bigger than it was. I like that its curved--I find I don't feel the drop sensation when hills are curved.

I wouldn't call the drops on Space Mountain "drops" in the traditional sense. They're very, very small. Like 6-7 feet max.

We were long time season pass holders at Six Flags Over Texas. The coasters there are also as a whole more intense than what's at Disney. The newer coasters there are extreme just to be extreme though and not nearly as much fun as what's at Disney.

The biggest is actually 18 feet, which at a speed around 30 mph is a lot to someone who does not like that falling sensation. I start getting that around 15 feet I have found, so Space does not bother me much, but I wouldn't want anyone else to read your post and think it is a kiddie ride. Even Barnstormer has more than a 6 foot drop.

I know people who LOVE the falling feeling think Space and others like it are baby roller coasters, but I am sure there are things you hate that would make some of us snicker as well. Yeah, WDW roller coasters are nothing compared to some of the thriller park ones, but you want see me there either. For most of us, it is not really a FEAR. but a physical sensation that is not pleasant.
