Death at DW today

I came right here after hearing the news -- you guys have more information than CNN at this point.

I just can't imagine enjoying vacation and then suffering a family tragedy like this. I have a little boy who loves roller coasters and hearing this makes my stomach flip.

That's what I initially thought as well; but it could have been his individual restraint, maybe he fell out?

so sad for the family.... i know last year dh and i rode it and his restraint came loose a bit he thought he was going to fall out and he told a cm about it and they told him that it was ok! :confused3

With all due respect, why are you so sure Universal has "as many, if not more problems?" Universal doesn't control the Orlando Sentinel, CNN, Fox et. al.; you can be darn sure if there were serious injuries or deaths on their rides, it would be getting press.

Perhaps the question we should be asking is why are people not dying on Universal's thrill rides -- while they (albeit, a tiny number) are on Disney's?

It's all in the numbers. Last year WDW had 42.8 million visitors, compared to Universal's 11.9 million. The more people there are, the higher the chance that one of them will have some sort of an accident or what have you.

Oh my god, that is absolutely heart-wrenching. His poor parents. My thoughts and prayers are certainly with them. That is unbearable, I don't know what I would do if that were my child, I really don't. Thats something that no one should ever have to go through, it's just not fair.
That's really heartbreaking. I'm so sorry to hear that.

I can't begin to imagine the pain (and underserved guilt) this family must be suffering through. They will all be in my prayers.

I'm curious if this is just my reaction: When I first heard of this tragedy, I instantly found myself thinking, "well, no way will I let my daughter on that thing when we're there in September". That was my first reaction, anyway. I then try to be logical about the situation. In all probability, the poor child had unrecognized health issues and his death was in no way the fault of Disney or the ride operator and could not have been foreseen. Even still, I find myself a little leery now. Am I the only one?

Whats most sad about these situations is that most parents/children dont even know there's a health problem until something this devastating happens, particularly because it's hard to pick up on a routine check-up with your doctor, or your pediatrician in this case. The hardest part is that constant guilt feeling of if only I had known then this could've been prevented. I feel like this has been happening alot latley with undiagnosed health problems...even too close to home, as this just has happened to a girl who went to the highschool in the district that I work in, just playing in a soccer game one day. Clearly, more advanced testing needs to be standard during routine check ups and maybe pediatric equipment should be more advanced.

I don't know why, but when my own 12 year old son asked to ride this ride last week while we were at MGM I had these thoughts going thru my head. "what if"...........but as a parent I thought maybe I was being too overprotective. I guess I was thinking this way because of the recent Misson Space incident. Some underlying health conditions go missed even on routine doctor visits.

My heart goes out to this family!! I can't even imagine what they are going through. :sad1:

How very tragic. I can't even imagine how his poor parents are feeling. My thoughts and prayers are with them.

Folks there are other incidents which never get reported as well -
Heat exhaustion cases - heart attacks after a long vigorous day of touring - dehydration etc.

The thing to know is to take care of yourself. Know your limitations, know the limitations of those whom you are with. DRINK LOTS OF WATER, and pace yourself.
People can literally as well as figuratively kill themselves when they over do it.

Hugs to all...

Let's all say a prayer for the family and the esp. the father.

AND -Please don't forget to say a prayer for the CMs who were working at the time and are also traumatized by the event.

Someone said earlier that these types of things (people dying suddenly from an unknown condition) seem to be happening more lately. I think one explanation is there are children living now who years ago would not be. For instance, the little boy who died after riding MS. I believe it was reported he had been a preemie. 20-30 years ago he may not have lived to reach the age of 4, the age when he died. I know even with my own DS16, if he had been born 50 years ago he and I both probably would have died. Not that we had any big emergency but with modern technology he and many other children are alive now who would not have been years ago.

Absolutely heart breaking... just two weeks ago today I was riding RNR with my sons 16 & 10... I can't even imagine what his family is going through right now... My heart goes out to them

I would have to imagine that not in any way are you the only one having these feelings. Whether or not this boy had health problems, the fact still remains that this is a high intesity thrill ride. If I were a mother, I would most certainly be skeptical. But to be reasonable for my children (in case they did want to go on once we got there), I would have very detailed physicals and maybe if I were really paranoid, specific testing done before we went. And I would feel like I had the right to be paranoid. I would never want the feeling of "I shouldve done this"...I think it would be worth it.

My heart thoughts and prayers go out to everyone involved in this :sad1:
And how bout a group hug from all us DISsers :grouphug:
I hope the family can feel our warmth and hear our prayers

So sad. And I reluctantly let my 10 yr. old ride RnR with DH for the first time in Feb. Now I am not so sure she will do it again when I take her by myself (I don't ride).

CNN article has another major error currently:

One month ago, another child died on the Disney ride "Mission Space" at the Epcot Center.

I assume they are refering to the ADULT incident. It would be nice if they got basic facts straight when going for the sensationalistic :sad2:

Prayers for the family.. . .

I think there was an adult incident but there was also a child incident as well. I seem to remember 2 Mission Space accidents before they changed the ride and I believe one was a small child.

So sad :( I feel so bad for the family, must be very hard for them. I can't imagine going on vacation, of course everyone being very happy and having a great time, then suddenly losing a child that way :(
