I am not affiliated with this company in anyway... just got sent an email as I had purchased from them in the past.

I am hoping to get a Canon S3 before our trip. Where is a good place to get a good deal on a memory card and rechargable batteries? I saw a mem card on buy.com for around $22 it was 1g and was Kingston brand.

Keep in mind, if you will be using the video function on the S3 (it is a pretty darn good one for a still camera) (only will record up to 1 gig) be sure to purchase a higher speed card, such as the Ultra II.

Thank you for the info, but I would like to add that the K110D w/kit is available at Buydig right now for $444.59 shipped with a $50 rebate. Also, it is the newer model w/ a better JPG engine. At these prices, anyone serious about photography should have no excuse to not get a DSLR.

This is basically the old Pentax *ist DS - however, it does have one key advantage over the other 6mp Pentax cameras... a bigger buffer. It can do 10-11 JPGs IIRC before filling the buffer, about double that of the *ist DL, K110D, and K100D. If you're not concerned about the image stabilization of the K100D but want more of a buffer, it's still a good choice, especially if you shoot RAW (which takes the JPG engine out of the equation.)

I have read a lot of posts on here recommending the Canon S3 IS digital camera, but feel that it's too much for me to spend on a camera. The main feature I am focusing on is a high optical zoom.

I found that the Kodak z612 is about $250 or less...now my question is, is this a decent price for this type of camera? I know Kodak is coming out with a new version, so this is probably why the price has dropped for the z612. Should I get it now or will the price drop lower when the z712 comes out in April?

Or are there any other high zoom cameras that you can suggest for less than $250?

Here are a couple of "tools" that might assist in your research:

You say you are looking for a "high optical zoom", which I take to mean a zoom with an extended range...something in the 7X-10X range. If that is true, your price constraints are going to limit your choices quite a bit, but maybe that is a good thing, as you won't have so many models to decide between.

Have you checked out the S2 IS? There should still be some of them floating around and they should be closer to the $250 you are considering for the Kodak.

particularly look for the ability to take rapid consecutive shots...daughter just won a kodak z710 at work and it take 5.5 seconds to take another shot:scared1: other than that the lags aren't bad. hers doesn't have IS either but don't know it the z6s do( guessing the z6s are older models than the z7s? her old kodak 4 mp easyshare was truly awful in lower light situations, such as outside under moderate-dense shade, nothing took
oh and i took yekim's link for the camera comparison and said no results...meaning I should stop being so picky ;):)

just saw the 6xx/7xx = megapixels not when they were released.

i have recently purchased the z612 and i absolutely love it. the lag time is not bad, i cant say exactly how long it takes though. it has an awesome busrt mode that allows you to take 8 consecutive shots of an action. great for rides i hope, my sledding photos came out great though, it was like a slow motion movie!! One thing to remember is that is does take a rechargable battery, and that is the main thing i am worried about for my trip. i am afraid my battery is going to die and dh willl have to go back to resort to charge. (i have 3 right now though) also check best buy, the were running it on sale 2 weeks ago for 229.00. any questions, i will try and help u the best i can.

That's exactly what happened to me at the tail end of our cruise with my Kodak DX6490 a couple years ago. I now own Canons and I love them for the fact that they take AA's and I always hated having to use a docking station to charge my Kodak battery, one more thing to lug around. In an emergency, unless you're in the middle of nowhere, it's always easy to find alkaline batteries.

Thanks for all your help. I will look into the Canon S2 IS. As for the Kodak one I was looking at, I wish they could use AA batteries, since they are easier to find almost anywhere.

You can put AA's in your Kodak. The rechargable battery is nothing more than 2 AA's put together. So you can get 2 Lithium AA's or NiMh AA's and it works just fine.

I have a Z612 and love the zoom.

PS, check out www.buydig.com I used them to buy my camera. Really fast. I ordered on Wednesday and it was at my door on Friday. Currently running $210.00 right now. They also have kits that include things like 2G cards, cases, card readers and so on.
