Deal or No Deal

My wife and I will probably split a meal at Yak & Yeti and maybe some other locations as well. I am curious about whether some items (especially soups) are considered an "appetizer" or not on DDP. I realize they are not listed in the "appetizer" part of the menu, but I wonder if they might substitute any of these for an appetizer since they are appetizer-like and, in some cases, cost less than the appetizers on the menu. Several, but not all, of the "sides" on the Yak & Yeti menu are also available as "appetizers." It would appear that the "appetizer" portion is larger since it costs more. But what about the sides that don't have a corresponding appetizer listed on the menu?

Yak & Yeti sides:
Chicken Fried Rice (Appetizer? Deal or no deal?)
House Stir Fried Vegetables (Appetizer? Deal or no deal?)
Steamed Rice (Appetizer? Deal or no deal?)

At Sci-Fi, the BLT Soup, IS listed under the "appetizer" heading on the menu, so I'm going to guess "deal" for that one. What about these soups:

Wonton Soup at Yak & Yeti (Appetizer? Deal or no deal?)
Tortilla Soup at San Angel Inn - menu lists it under heading "appetizers and soup" (Appetizer? Deal or no deal?)
Soup of the Day at Columbia Harbor House (Appetizer? Deal or no deal?)
Soup(s) at AKL Mara (Appetizer? Deal or no deal?)
Soup at CBR Old Port Royale Food Court (Appetizer? Deal or no deal?)

Thanks!

I'm not sure I understand what you are asking. Unless you are on the DxDDP, it wouldn't really matter if the soup is an appetizer. The DxDDP is the only one that gives you an appetizer with your meal.

I suppose what you're wanting to know is the size of any of these items where they are listed. The only one I can help with is Columbia Harbour House. The chilli we had came in a bowl that I consider a cereal size bowl. It would not have been enough for a meal by itself, but we did share the bowl of chilli and the tuna sandwich and felt that was enough for us (we were on the QSDP, so we also had a drink and a dessert) I think we paid OOP for the chilli, but it could've been a snack credit.

I was under the impression that it was possible to substitute an appetizer in place of dessert. Perhaps I was misinformed?

I'm pretty sure you were misinformed. That has been the desire of most people on DDP since they took away the appetizer, but Disney does not normally allow people to do this. However, it never hurts to ask politely....maybe you'll get some Disney magic.

Soup or salad could be selected as an appetizer unless it is entree sized, which would be pretty clear from the price or its inclusion in the entree section of the menu. I don't know if anyone has ordered a side dish as an appetizer, but you can always ask.

You can't substitute an appetizer for the dessert on the DDP. Restaurants have been quite strict about this. If you want appetizers you'll have to pay OOP or you can do the DxDDP which does include an appetizer.

PP are absolutely correct...you cannot get appetizers instead of dessert. If you don't want dessert, you can skip it...but no substitutions. The best you can hope for if you don't want the dessert choices is some places will allow you to get a bottled water or a serving of fruit instead of dessert. But never appetizers...been tried 100s of times and it's a no-go. And some places insist choices from the dessert menu only.

The only time appetizers are covered is if you are on the Deluxe Dining Plan (typically called DxDP on this forum)

SO misinformed. I would take the person out and whip them with a stick...just kidding.

But you were misinformed, Disney doesn't allow substituting an appy for your dessert credit.

Soups usually can be your apps- no problem However they are usually a poor value as an app since they are half the cost of most apps.

Yak and Yeti is not disney owned and will be less flexible then other places so I would say no to a side for an APP

Honestly they have wonderful apps and by the time you share one plus the meat and veg portion of your entree you won't need anymore rice. Try the dumplings.

This only applies if you are doing dxdp.

desserts can not be subbed for apps except at places only exception would be signatures that have cheese plates on dessert menu- but even then you probably would get it at the end of a meal as a dessert and not an app.

Ok. Thanks for clearing that up. Better to find out now than while we're sitting at the table. Even if I have to pay OOP for a bowl of soup at a couple of meals, we're still saving because it will only take 1 TS credit between us. That means even with having to use double TS credits for CRT, we're still getting another TS meal rather than having to pay OOP for that one.

The app. is an inclusion at TS restaurants for the DxDP. No CS location includes an app. on any of the plans, though sometimes you can get those items with a snack credit in addition to your counter service credit for the meal. Every CS location is different in what it allows for a SC though!

I know that an adult on dxdp gets an appetizer; but what about the kid on dxdp, does she get an appetizer too since kid dxdp costs more than that on ddp ($24.99 vs $12.00) thanks

Kids meals always get a kids app, even on the basic dp. Though this app is really more of a side dish, like sone carrots or grapes.

Kids DxDP is more expensive than ddp, because it is 3 TS credits per day. If you did 3 buffets in 1 day, the kids value would be enormous.

Havoc315 is correct...the kids DxDP cost more because you get more meals & snacks, as well as the refillable mug. Besides getting 3 meals a night (DxDP) instead of 2 meals (DDP) your child will also get 2 snacks per day instead of 1 snack. And it's your choice where the meals credits get used so you could choose 3 TS per day, or a combination of TS & QS, whatever fits your schedule. Breakfast character buffet for a child can run $14...lunch & dinner are even higher. You could easily get way more value than the cost of DxDP for a child.

As a foot note... On the DxDP.. the meal credits on the computer, are not separated for adult/child. Disney restaurants still enforce the rule that kids must get from the kids menu...... But not necessarily at the non-Disney Restaurants.

When we went to Via Napoli, the server advised that since we had the deluxe credits, the kids could order from the adult menu. My kids are young and small eaters, so they are perfectly happy with the kids meals. But though we ordered the kids pasta, they still brought us -- and "charged" us for the adult pasta.

While I wouldn't recommend trying to break the rules, it does seem the TS credits on the deluxe plan have slightly more flexibility.
