I'm just home from a lovely week in Holland. While there we visited de Efteling theme park. They have a model donkey there that if you pay 30c will lift up its tail and poop out a souvenir coin.

Does anyone know the story behind this?

No, Ive never heard of it until I read your post but it sounds interesting. Hope some one can help you out as I would love to know too.

By the way did you get a poop coin?:confused3

Here you go...

The Wishing-Table, the Gold-Donkey, and the Cudgel-in-the-Sack (from the Brothers Grimm)

Each son apprentices himself to a craftsman, and at the end of their apprenticeships, they each receive a magical item.

The eldest son receives a magic table. When you say: "Table, set thyself!", the table produces a lavish feast.

On his way home, he stops at an inn and uses the table to feed all the guests. During the night, the greedy innkeeper secretly swaps the table for an ordinary one. When the boy reaches home, he tells his dad to summon all the relatives for a feast, but the table fails. Much embarrassment ensues.

The middle son gets a magic donkey. When you shout the word: "Bricklebrit!", it spews gold pieces out of...

... its front and back.

On his way home, he too stops at the inn. The innkeeper steals the magic donkey, and the second son is similarly embarrassed.

The third son is given a magic stick in a sack. When you shout: "Cudgel, out of the sack!", the stick hops out of the sack and beats up your enemy.

When this son arrives at the inn, he announces to all the guests that he has a treasure in his sack. When the innkeeper attempts to steal it, the son shouts, "Cudgel, out of the sack!" and the stick beats the innkeeper until the innkeeper agrees to return the magic table and donkey.
The third son returns home, they invite over all the relatives, they have a big party, and everyone goes home very rich.

Did you know the Efteling was also one of the inspirations for Walt Disney for Disneyland.

Great story ! I won't have to ask Inge now!

Thanks for that Aruna:thumbsup2 Interesting story, I think Ive heard it before but its not popular in the UK.

I didnt know about its connection with Disneyland either - you learn something every day.

Thanks for satisfying my curiosity.

I didn't know that but it doesn't surprise me at all, even as I was walking around I was trying to work out if it predated Disneyland. It was a fun day out but we found getting the car out of the car park rather scary - it semed to be designed for minis rather than our Mondeo.

We were at De efteling the weekend before last and loved it. The girls loved the storybook part of the park and we were surprised (and very happy, if the truth be told) at the lack of height rescrictions at the park. Our (just) 3 year old DD got on some pretty grown-up rides, including the Kali type river rapids and a ride called Bob (bob sleigh), and she sat up the front and loved it. This allowed the queues to flow quickly and it was refreshing to not have to keep spliting our group up:thumbsup2 not once did we feel she was at risk, we were happy to take responsibility for her safety.
We saw the pooping donkey and thought of you ;) I also know what you mean about the car park, it was like visiting sainsburys rather than a rather large theme park, but it worked well!
We spent a lovely half term at Center Parcs De emerhof. I would highly recommend a visit there for any of you that have children of an age that like all the swimming, bike riding and all the other outdoors stuff that Center Parcs has to offer.
Center Parcs in the UK is quite pricey IMHO, if you don't mind a bit of continental driving we got a top of the range 2bed "villa" for 7 nts including our bike hire for 700e for half term (most NL half term was the week before). I priced the equiv villa over here fore the same week for £2000:scared1: I know you have to take into account petrol and channel crossing but no way did that amount to another £1400. We also spent a day in Amsterdam (30 miles away) and used a great park and ride system, we parked at the Olympic stadium for 6e all day which included our tram tickets into town:thumbsup2

I went to De Efteling on a school trip over 10 years ago (I am getting old) and I fell out of the kali river rapid ride ring thing into the river :scared1: I had to pulled back on by my friends and I was soaked all day!

Makes me nervous going on those river things now! I remember there was ride where you sat in snail and it went through a storybookland? We queued for over an hour for that!:sad2:

Sounds great Joanne, friend of ours moved to Holland and asked us to go and visit, so hopefully early neaxt year:thumbsup2
