This will be our first trip as DVC owners. We are taking Mom to the VGF in September and she won't be joining us in the parks. She eats like a bird. I'm thinking about getting DDP for my family and NOT for Mom. Is this doable???:confused3

It's all or none.

The only way around it would be to leave her off the room reservation which would present it's own set of issues: no EMH, no DME, no MagicBand, etc.

One thing to possibly consider. I believe this would work, but I'm sure someone can jump in and correct me if I'm wrong!

The credits aren't assigned specifically to her--it's one lump sum of credits for the reservation. You could still pay for her meal out of pocket and use the credits for an extra meal. I don't know how many are in your party, but lets say there's 4 of you, staying 6 nights. With regular dining plan, you have 24 TS credits. If you only use 3 credits at each TS and pay for one out of pocket, you could actually do 8 meals (or throw in some signatures).

Does that make sense?

Thanks Mom.....I totally understand what you are saying. I'm also playing with the idea of the TiW card, but the numbers are so close that it's hard to decide. My family is me, DH and 17 yr old DD (and MOM).

That's an option. You can use the credits any way you like with one exception, you can't order more meals than the number of people on the plan.

Do any of the adults drink? The TiW discount also applies to alcohol.

Mom drinks wine, but again, she won't be with us except for some breakfast meals. I've read alot of threads discussing tiw vs ddp, and again, it all comes down to the numbers. :)

You need to remember that Disney's meal deals are designed to make Disney more money, not to save you money but it can happen. Disney adds rules and restrictions or features that may not be important to you.

The only way to find out which way to go is to list your meals and restaurants, the food that you may feel like eating and compare the prices.

Good luck and have fun!

The occasions where I've looked into these dining plans it appears to me that the cost is based on selecting the most expensive item in each category (i.e., appetizer, entree, dessert). The minute you choose the chicken pasta entree instead of the more expensive filet entree, you're upside down on the package. Same with getting to the end of the meal and you're no longer hungry for dessert. (Heresy! I know! ;))

Just think of the thousands and thousands of credits that aren't used on the DDP, the drink mugs never picked up or used, or the table service credits used on a quick service item because it isn't money, it's just credits. :scared1:

Are you planning another trip within a yr. The TIW card would be good for that trip too.

TIW usually requires ID. However, one thing to factor in is that it is good for a year (mine was 13 plus months), so if you have a second visit planned.....

My vote is TiW. I ran the numbers and even with multiple character dining and buffets we will still save OOP vs DDP

You guys have been so awesome. Yeah, there's a big difference now that I know it's all or none. We are hoping for a one bedroom so we'd all be staying in one room. I've run the numbers more and TiW does win out. And you are so right about the "credits" ---- this way here I wouldn't be leaving money on the table. Thanks for everyone's imput!!

As usual (for me), I recently read something that might help, but can't remember where. :confused3 Maybe someone else can chime in with thoughts...

I think it's possible to leave your Mom off the ressie, get the DDP for everyone in the room, then add Mom to the room stay during check-in for $25 per night? I think she would then get a MB at check-in, but would not need to be added to the dining plan.

Can someone else confirm if this would be the case?

Your best savings if you get a 1 bedroom is to prepare some of your meals in the villa. It will give Mom something to do, save you a ton of money, and you probably won't need to buy any dining plan.
