Now that we must tip could I get some lessons on how to tip? What if the service is bad, do we still need to tip the standard 15%? I don't mind tipping but do have a problem with rewarding bad service.

I felt the old plan was better when the server was tipped regardless. We did have bad service at Mama Melrose but that was the only place. Now, I wonder what to do if we do have bad service.

The bigger issue for me ....is punishing the wrong person.

Twice durring my last trip, we had a great server....BUT managment did not have enough staff, so although at the beginning of our meal, our server did a great job with us and the 5 tables around us,....by the end of our meal our server had 15 tables and we couldn't get refills, desert, or our check without waiting 45 minutes between stops by our server (who was running the entire time)

I wanted to send a message that we were not happy....but cutting the tip would have hurt the wrong person. :confused3

PS some of the tables were 10 or more people...that's just impossable with the amount of tables our server was trying to cover

This is a really hot topic, because there are no set rules about tipping and the expected amounts have really climbed over time.

Personally, I use 15% as a minimum, and add from there for good service. I can't think of more than a couple times in my life when I've had service bad enough that I've left less, and good servers get quite a bit more.

the tip that was on there was 18%. If you have bad service try to assertain as stated above whether it is the servers fault or something else happening. THan when they bring the check as to see the manager and explain to him what your complaints and concerns are, then leave what you feel the server deserves.

A tip of 18% will automatically be added to parties of 6 or more in 2008.

All others should tip what they feel is appropriate. A good base would be following the industry standards for average or just below average service (15%-18%). I would definitely tip more for above average service, but the final percentage is left up to the individual (with parties of 5 or less).

for the DDP,DDE card and partys of six or more an auto gratuity of 18% will be presented. If not happy with service you will have to get a manager to adust
Note a tip is disgressionary(up to you the amount to give) a gratuity is`nt(you have to pay what it says)

Has the DDE card been confirmed, or is it still mainly rumor on the boards?

Thanks for clarifying. Since the thread was DDP and tipping I assumed that most would know that's what I meant. You're right to clarify though, who knows what some people may read into a post on this board. :)

Let me begin this saying that as a former waitress, I tip well. But I hate automatic gratuities. In most cases the server gets less than I would have tipped anyway. Obviously, I have control issues :)...BUT what I want to know is if I have a party with five adult/children and a non-ordering toddler, will the tip be automatically added?

Had waitresses in the family. I leave standard of 20% ... - I don't think I've heard of 15% in a while? But I am in a rather metropolitan area so ... maybe that is why?

Anyway ... it would have to be pretty bad for me to leave less than 20% and that would mean TOTAL disregard of us while waiting better on others and I can't think of a time when that EVER happened.

If my coffee or iced tea gets filled on occasion ... I am happy! Interesting topic OP!

I am with you....I have a large family and any place we go to regularly would never dream of automatically adding a tip....they would be cheating themselves. I would think that they would mean a party of six paying customers.

I agree, it's nutty.
But, they make you book the reservation counting the baby....

The e-mail I received this morning regarding Disney Dining Experience reads:

"We would also like to inform you that the Walt Disney World® Resort will be implementing an across property policy change regarding gratuity at all food and beverage locations. Effective January 1, 2008, 18% gratuity will be added to all transactions, regardless of party size."

Lord, people are going to freak...sounds like it is beyond the DDE and to all meals.

It does sound that way, but people who usually know say it ain't so. They say the email was only intended to indicate the long-known change to DDE, and does not apply across the board.

Some people who have called have apparently been told the same thing, so there may be a lot less here than it first appeared.

I wonder how many people are going to cancel their plans next fall when they are going with the Free Dining. I bet they will not be to pleased when they are handed a 18% bill. Plus, I wonder if they know about the new rules next year that the tip is no longer included in the Dining Plan, plus no more appetizers.
