DDP and the FT Wilderness Cabins

Ok, we just returned from 10 nights and while we did use all our TS and snacks (thanks to some creative spending at the trading post!!) we had 20 CS meals left on the last day. I did not have time to go to DTD to use them up. I found it very hard to use them up, staying at the cabins since there is no Quick service there. Plus we had two babies with us, so if we were back at the cabins for a nap, one of us couldn't run down for food. Not a complaint really, just an observation that if you are in the cabins, the meal plan is a little harder to utilize. (we did not have a car, so we relied on the eletric cart and buses for transport.) We still go our use of the free dining in on TS.

Could you tell me what snacks you were able to purchase at FW? I have very little information on FW. TIA

We were able to get chips and dip, ice cream bars, Juice, Milk, (indiv size) bottled water (big and small). The only thing we couldn't get, for some crazy reason, was yogurt. The staff was puzzled by this one too, and they have mentioned it to managment, so this may change in the future.

The problem seems to be more with your choice of schedule rather than the site (Fort Wilderness), although that did play a part.

You could have picked up something to go at whatever park you left since you had planned a naptime each day into your schedule.

FW has very few choices for the dining plan, at least that's what we found in April. Of course, that was before the snack selection was expanded! There is no place there for counterservice, except for the main pool snack bar, which is often closed (and is a bus or cart ride away from most cabins).

Although it is possible to plan ahead somewhat, it's not at all convenient to get food on the way out of the parks and carry it all the way back to your cabin, along with bags & the stroller or whatever. I don't really have a solution to this, as FW is so spread out, but it's good to let people know.

You can take the boat to the WL or Contemp for CS meals.

We had CS credits left over too after our August trip at FW. One evening we were going to use CS there because it's listed in the brochure as CS for dinner. When I called the front desk to find out where it was, it turned out that it was the main pool snackbar and he said it closed at 4pm. We went to the trading post and there wasn't anything that appealed to us so we went back and ate bread and bagels. It was raining and DD4 was cranky so we didn't want to go over to WL or CR.

Thanks for the imput, I'd been wondering about that as I've been considering a cabin for a future trip and we really like the dining plan.

Im glad you posted this. We are going in Jan for 8 nights and staying in a cabin. I think we maybe ok though because half our table service meals are taken up by Hoop Dee Doo and Cinderella's breakfast. So we will have to eat quite a few CS meals. We have our car so i can see us hitting the nearest resort for CS and or as someone suggested picking something up on our way back from the packs to eat at cabin.

That was the problem for us....Picking up something on the way out of the parks meant standing in line (which was tough if the 2 yr old was "all done") and also transporting it along with bags and strollers and kids back to the cabin. They don't really have true "to-go" containers in the parks so you can through your meal in a bag. It's not a complaint, just something I hadn't really thought of until we got there. I never even saw the snack bar open?! When I mentioned all the counter service meals to a CM at the trading post, she never mentioned it either?!

The chips and dip were a large bag of Fritos and a large jar of Ranch Dip. Yum!!

Too bad you had to forfeit so many CS meals. I love FW & the cabins, but since we have no young children anymore we don't have the same problem.

We were at the cabins in Sept and since we had free dining I didn't have to cook there!

We used every single one of our credits! I have to say that it wasn't easy! We ate before we came back to the cabin for our afternoon break!

The kids (3,5,7 and 9) were always full! We hardly needed the microwave popcorn and other snacks we stocked up on to keep them satisfied!

That said...The Fort Wilderness Campground and Cabins has been designed as a campground! The majority of people staying there bring and cook their own food. Hence there are fewer places to purchase a meal. If you look at it that way and do a little planning you can have the best of both worlds!

The Dining Plan is fantastic and it does require a bit of imagination and planning!!!
