Ok you save 20% but now they add on a 18% tip on EVERYTHING - so you really save 2% ??? I am not a math wizard, please explain why I would spend $60 for this as a AP holder. Thanks.

You save 2% only if you generally tip nothing.

It'd be proportional based on what you generally tip. If you usually tip 18% or more, then it's still a good discount.

Try thinking of it this way.

Your bill is $100 for dinner. Without DDE, you would pay $100 plus whatever tip you choose to leave. Let's pretend you choose 18% so you would pay $118.

With DDE, the bill would be discounted from $100 to $80. The the 18% automatic gratuity would be added to make it $98. So in this example, you would save exactly $20 (20%).

Tax not considered for simplicity.

When I used the DDE card a few years ago the gratuity wasn't added automatically so I usually just tipped what the discount amount was so I wasn't receiving any discount looking at it from the way your question was worded. In reality I have to pay a tip no matter what, so I am saving money. You do have to look at where and what you'll be eating and see if you'll recoup the $60 you paid for the DDE card but also remember that you get a discount on alcoholic beverages which you won't get paying OOP or on DDP.

My DH tends to tip 20%, so the 18% was actually a bargain in our opinion! Considering the 20% comes off everything on your bill, even alcohol, the DDE card is something we'd never consider not purchasing & using.

This is the perfect way of putting this! This only people DDE doesnt benefit are those who feel tipping is unneccessary.......

Yeah, we're on our third DDE card and love it. We prefer the TS restaurants when visiting WDW, so the card makes us feel free to try new places, enjoy the food and save money (on meals/wine we'd be buying anyway). And since we eat at the resorts a lot, when you consider the savings for parking--loves me that valet service--it really is a no brainer for us. FWIW.

now let me kinda monkey wrench everyones reasoning......

What about the seasonal(memorial day thru july 4th included) upcharges now for alot of buffets and character dining?$4 per person at each meal. thats $16 for a family of 4. I think the DDP pays for these charges....thats an extra $112 for a 7 night stay w/ only 1ts buffet or specialty dining per day...if u do ts breakfast and a ts dinner it can add up pretty quick if you are larger than 4. yes these are only buffets and specialty/character dinings

chef mickeys
crystal palace
Boma
CRT
etc........

Yes, the DDP covers the seasonal surcharge on buffets & family style meals. DDE still gives a 20% discount on the higher priced meals.

We got DDP in December because of the holiday surcharges (and so my Dad who was coming with us wouldn't freak out at the prices ;) ) we still used our DDE card on drinks & OOP kids meals for DS.

We just used it yesterday for the first time at the Beirgarten. The bill came to $61 and change before the DDE. Afterwards it was $63 and change and that was with the tip....although our server never told us the tip would be included but I read the receipt like a hawk.

So this means you don't normally tip? The tip has nothing to do with the discount. Most people tip whether they get a discount or not...at least we do.

Here's one if you usually tip 15% -

A $100 meal plus a 15% tip is $115.

A $100 meal with a 20% discount is $80. Plus an 18% mandatory tip is $98.

You are still saving $17 over the cost without DDE. (of course tax would be added too, so maybe take another couple bucks off that.) Over a few meals, that adds up.

As others have pointed out, that is not the correct math.:) The only way the savings is only 2% is if you wouldn't tip otherwise.

Also remember that at some resorts the 20 percent off your meals......we stayed at Port Orleans FQ and had alot of discounts......and also at All Star Resorts......we save alot on TS restaurants too....

yep, you can use it at counter service at Animal Kingdom also (except Anandupur Food Cafes, they don't take it) and no tips necessary there.

I always think if DDE as saving the tip. When you think of all the tips being paid for it really adds up. We tip 20% for buffets and sit down so there is really no change in it.

Heck, saving 20% is saving 20%! We usually tip 20%. So we SAVE 20%. (And having alcohol included makes those visits to the bars like the Belleview Room all that much more "enjoyable".)

DisFlan

Aren't you suppose to pay tip on the full check amount and not the discounted amount?

We always tip between 15 and 20% depending upon level of service. But I was trying to figure out how long it would also take to recoop the initial $60 outlay. Thanks.

does the DDE work at all Disney Restaurants? I thought back in 2004 when they tried to get us to buy it, it was at certain restaurants. If it works at the same eateries as DDP, then i have to consider the DDE.

Help.
