DDE and tipping

I know this is probably a silly question but things are different here in UK. When using the DDE card, do you calculate the tip based on the cost of the meal before the discount or after?

Same here. We left the 20% as our tip which was based on the undiscounted price of meal.

We figured a 25% tip on the reduced balance=20% of the orignal. So figure it whatever way is easier.

We usually tip 20% unless service is not what it should be, so we always just tipped the amount of the discount. Saved a lot of calculations after dinner!

Tipping should always be based on the price before any discounts or coupons that are applied. That way, the server doesn't get penalized for any coupons or promotions the restaurant may be running.

I agree that tipping should always be based on any pre-discounted price. However, also do not consider Sales Tax when tipping. BTW, when the price is reduced with DDE the Sales Tax is also reduced since that is based on the actual amount you pay for the meal.

DITTO...we always tip on the original amount. If you tip 20% as some of the other posters mentioned then the tip will end up being the same amount as the discount (since it's 20%).

They base the tax on the discounted total. Here's the figures I found on a receipt from Rose & Crown in May:

Subtotal $34.36
20% DDE -6.87
Tax 1.79
Amount Due $29.28
Tip 7.00
Total $36.28

We also just leave whatever the discount amount is as a tip. The only time this isn't the case with us is at the buffet meals. This will probably open a ' can of worms' here, but we never leave 20% at the buffets. Only about 12% or so. If we get outstanding service then it could go to 15 or if it is minimal service it goes to 10.
