DIS Dads DDC XXXIV: The Original Home Of The DISDads!!!

Dads of the DIS talk about life, bacon, Disney, bacon, kids, bacon, cars, bacon, family life, and lots of other fun stuff! And beer. And bacon.
Happy Friday!

Went to the PTA as one of 2 men in a group of 25, and I now appear to be Co-Chairperson. Bugger knows how that happened.

In 24 hrs of taking the post I have been asked:
a. Am I happy with the current arrangements for the stalls of the Xmas Bazaar? (this would have an assumption I have the first bloody clue what the current arrangements are, as the person who sent me this email didn't attach anything)
b. Am I happy for the current Christmas Card Co-ordinator (such a role exists?) to stay in her current position? Happy for you guys to take a vote, I always think like Alfred Hitchcock, fire someone early to establish your authority. Or should I aim for someone in a higher position? Maybe the Easter Bunny booker?
c. Can I assign someone for the rota on the christmas stalls (palmed that one off to the vice chair).

Hopefully as you can see, I am taking a lot of this in the style I generally ran projects, with a massive dose of bemusement.
This could be fun.

Sucker.

So much for Fall Break. Looks like I get another vacation attacked by a hurricane, and it even followed us over to the Gulf side. Last year, we cancelled Vero Beach Resort as the area was under a Hurricane Warning. The place we are going isn't under a hurricane yet, but it has the potential. Maybe we will arrive Saturday and the storm should hit that night. :furious:

That sucks. As of now, it is supposed to be a small 1. It was turning a bit west but it is going to affect the Panhandle. Hopefully it continues to move west.

Saw the picture on FB. A great way to spend time with the daughter. I'm in teen turmoil here, so i hope to get there one day.

Thanks. It will get there and trust me, it is still not all tea and cookies every day with her.

Anyone else see this in Dan's future?

220, 221 whatever it takes. Funny movie.

Hey all.
Just back from a two day motorcycle tour.
Did too much in too cold weather.
Still, glad I went. :)

Sounds like an interesting time. Glad you were able to get away.

Happy Friday dads. I'm actually taking a day off work today and giving myself a four day weekend. Canadian Thanksgiving coming up on Monday. My in-laws are out of town this year, we normally go to their place for dinner. So DW has picked up the turkey and all the fixins, despite never having cooked turkey dinner before. Things could get interesting at my place.

Just make sure she takes out all the innards they pack inside. Have her mom and the Butterball hotline on speed dial.

Happy very belated birthday, sounds like a good time.

It was. For those of you not on Facebook, here is the pic. Monsoon rains and gusty winds limited what I was able to do during the day but it ended well when the kid and I went to one of our favorite Italian restaurants. For dessert, we ended up splitting a glass of Sambuca. Nice night.

Three things for successful turkey...
1) Make sure you remove the neck and giblets before cooking
2) Get a bag and use per instructions
3) Cook upside down. You would not believe how much juicier this makes the breast. Up until the last 45 minutes or so, then turn right side up.

As one of the few (I guess) not on FB, thanks. Good picture. Is PP still doing the dive job? How's she liking it?

Upside down, huh? Interesting...

What's #2? Bag?

And I would make step 2 - Brine.

Basically a plastic bag designed for this purpose and you put a few tablespoons of flour it to keep it from sticking.

While brining might make it better, I'm simply giving the suggestions for someone who's never cooked one. Brining (I think) would be more for an experienced turkey person.

Well.... I kinda miscalculated so... that was very nearly me. :rolleyes1

Still lost. So you don't cook the turkey in it since it's plastic... so... what?

I think I brined my first turkey. Never looked back.

But... you may be right. Now I also cover my bird with bacon and maple syrup. OMG.

It helps make it moister since it keeps water/juices from evaporating in the oven heat. Obviously you can do without bag, I was just thinking it would help more for a newbie.

I like salty...DW not so much...she probably wouldn't like brining.

But... you may be right. Now I also cover my bird with bacon and maple syrup. OMG.
Oh my gosh....maple and bacon, what's NOT to love?

Oh! So it does go in the oven.
Never heard of that before!

Salty? No, it doesn't taste salty. It just doesn't taste dry. Moist and tender... not salty.

Oh my gosh....maple and bacon, what's NOT to love?

::yes::

These work great.

Ohhhh.... Okay. Got it now.

Morning guys. The rain seems to let up today for now. Getting excited for tomorrow, big game for the Gators.

3) Cook upside down. You would not believe how much juicier this makes the breast. Up until the last 45 minutes or so, then turn right side up.

Used the bag and did the upside down cooking. The bag worked well, kind of a self baster. Only tried the upside down cooking once because it didn't work for me.

As one of the few (I guess) not on FB, thanks. Good picture. Is PP still doing the dive job? How's she liking it?

They completed the project and she is just waiting for the next one to come up. Still has the lab job though.

Well.... I kinda miscalculated so... that was very nearly me. :rolleyes1

Oops.

These work great.

That's the bag. I thought it worked well, just don't use it any more. I am a big believer in brining the turkey. May be an extra step she doesn't want to try the first time out. Williams-Sonoma has a brining mixture that has a number of spices. It is balanced out so the meat has the benefit of brining (stays moist) but does not come out salty. Does add a little bit of flavor with all the spices. When brining, you do have to watch the temp of the turkey so it stays cold and doesn't let in bacteria. I put it in a cooler filled with water and ice. Ice is added as needed.

It works well...you just can't leave it upside down too long or when you try to flip it over (should be last 45min - hr), it will want to fall apart.

Oh, I thought the diving one was going to be longer term. Did she enjoy that or just exhausting?

Oh! So it does go in the oven.

Sorry @pkondz...I didn't specifically say that, so I guess if you'd never used one, you wouldn't know. You put the turkey in it and yes, it goes in the oven. Mea culpa. I've never tried brining because I thought it would make it more salty and DW wouldn't like it. The bag and upside down works well for us.

Yep. Got it now, thanks.
I'm surprised the bag doesn't melt at all. Space stuff!

Okay boys, that's it. Work (ahem) week over. Everyone out. The very best of Thanksgiving weekends to our Canadian Brethren, may your Turkey be basted and your guests be wasted. Everyone in Le Cellier in 10 mins, for a bottle of Crown Royal for the table in honour of the country up North.
Have a good evening chaps.

I was thinking you were more of a closet Canadian.

I had a coffee crisp and crown royal. I'm out of the closet.

Sounds fun, despite the cold.

Good luck with the turkey. Are you just baking in the oven? Or, did you try the feel dryer route?

I hope it stays west or turns around. We are going to try and get there early so that when they are done cleaning, we can get all the stuff inside before it starts raining.

It didn't work for me upside down. I just brine and put in oven. I like deep fried the best, but don't have a fryer.

I like salty...DW not so much...she probably wouldn't like brining.

The brine doesn't make it taste salty. I've tried the injector with different flavors, but it worked best for me with brine the night before and a stick of butter up it's butt baked in the oven.

Enjoying that Crown Royal now. Have a great weekend.
