This is a different DisDads post.
A couple of weeks ago, I was able to meet up with my best friend Dan. It's been a while, like ten years, since we last met up. He has three kids now, as do I. The last time, neither of us were married and we didn't have kids. But you know a best friend because those changes don't change anything.
Dan was so kind towards my oldest, Davis. On the walk home from the ice cream shop, Dan said he would give Davis five dollars for helping with his kids. Davis was awesome with his kids. After Davis was given the money, he said he wanted to save it for our Disney trip in August. So, I put in his Fidelity account so it would earn interest.
Tonight, Davis changed his mind and said he wants the money from my friend, Dan, to go to a charity for children instead.
Some backstory: Davis went to Lurie's Children Hospital as a young child due to his feet. I had braces as a child and unfortunately, Davis was born with a similar issue, but thankfully it wasn't as bad. While he went to Lurie's, he had amazing care and received the utmost compassion. His doctor, Eric King, was phenomenal.
Yesterday, I was listening to a Morningstar podcast with Ramit Sethi about living a rich (meaningful) life. From that podcast and my son's words tonight, I learned something: I need to be more generous.
So, I told him I would match his $5.00, because he mentioned it wasn't a lot. But I want to do more than just give $10.00 to Lurie's. So not to put anyone on the spot, but my wife and I talked and we will match all gifts to Lurie's up to $5,000. And it's not just for DisDads. You can let others know. But to be honest, I have found the DisDads group to be a great group of men, and I would like to believe we can give generously to a world that is deeply in need of our kindness and generosity. Also, I will show proof of matching.
Davis is making me a better person, as are his brothers Maxwell and Robin. I want my children to believe they can change the world for good. And the DisDads board is one place where I find hope for a better tomorrow.
Thank you for being here, whether or not you choose to give. I understand everyone has different abilities to give. All of you are wonderful. Even if you cannot give, please provide a kind word for Davis, as he was the main driver of this effort. Thank you again!
