DIS Dads DDC XXXIV: The Original Home Of The DISDads!!!

Dads of the DIS talk about life, bacon, Disney, bacon, kids, bacon, cars, bacon, family life, and lots of other fun stuff! And beer. And bacon.
Maybe. It just seems that a lot of the people who used to read and kibitz aren't on the DIS anymore. There's still a handful left, but... there used to be tons more.
True. Sad, but true. I'm guilty myself. Just not as much time for the dis anymore.

It seems all the flowers decided to bloom at once and my allergies are driving me absolutely crazy. The normal meds aren't doing much
Oh that sucks. Sorry.

One word. Rum.

Bernkastel–Kues
Bernkastel, as you can hopefully surmise from the name is where the castle was.
Kues was sister city on other side of the Mosel

Thanks for the photos, Doc!

Yes, that's a pineapple Dole Whip. Mmmmmm...

Always a win. We have a local frozen yogurt place that sells Dole Whips. Can't help but drop in once in a while just to get a taste. You're right, though, it's not the same as Disney.

It's gonna be weird next week when my Monday is the same as everyone else's on the planet.

Can't have that. I think that will cause a rip in the space time continuum.

Doc beat me to it!

Yeah, it's definitely changed over the years. I'm sure people have lost interest or have less time to hang around, or a combination of factors. Nothing ever stays the same, does it?

We watched Turning Red this weekend. While it is not a movie I will be going out of my way to see again, it isn't necessarily bad, just different. If you are wanting classic Disney or Pixar, this is not it (but I said the same about Encanto). There is a good moral to the story and The Kid did say it is a good representation of what it is like to be a middle school girl with all the challenges that entails. My advice, watch it with an open mind and without any preconceived notions.

Will do. Nothing wrong with Disney or Pixar trying something a little different. I get the feeling I might not be the target audience for this one, though.

Morning, folks.
Good day today.... I called in and took the day off.
Got something else coming up today and I'll post when it happens.

Just not as much time for the dis anymore.
That is a very common refrain. Life's busy for everyone and the DIS has a way of sucking more and more time from you.
Hope it is a good Tuesday for everyone.

No, not the same... but good. ::yes::

Unfortunately not. I still keep in touch (about once/twice a year) with Nebo (Think you knew him?) and a couple others on an adhoc basis, but... most are just... gone.

I think another factor for me, although I'm sad to admit.....

Since Disney's lustre has tarnished worse than wet brass, I know the liklihood of being able to do a dismeet is very low. Although I did have one with a mutual friend in early Feb. Carrie from Ohio. If you're not sure who I'm talking about, DM me. Since I don't think anyone else here knows her(possibly Mark), I didn't want to post her username out of respect.

Except for DDCC, I'm not using my tickets, so only options are at resorts or DTD.

So, it's harder for me to follow old friends knowing I won't, in all likelihood, be able to meet up with them. Even less likely now.

I think I do. :)

I understand.

However... a trip to Germany in a year or two.... maybe? :)

You mean Southern Alberta?
Actually, I would like to get up to the frozen north. My grandmother was a Newfie and I would like to see that part of the world. I heard a lot of stories growing up that I must find out whether or not they are true. Although, if I remember correctly, Newfies don't consider themselves Canadian (or is it that folks from the mainland don't consider Newfies to be Canadian?:confused3)

You already have a HOG; is this the start of a midlife crisis? Sure doesn't seem like sensible transportation. I thought everyone in Canada drove one of these:

Thanks. :)

Actually... so would I. Never been out to "The Rock".

They're all true. Unless they're completely outlandish... then they're definitely true.
Although, if I remember correctly, Newfies don't consider themselves Canadian (or is it that folks from the mainland don't consider Newfies to be Canadian?:confused3)
Not sure about that. I've known a few Newfs and don't recall them saying they didn't consider themselves Canadian... but they do consider their English more correct.

You know... I had a 2-door car and liked it. But... my folks are both 90 now and not driving. I'm going to have to drive them more and shoe-horning my dad, with his artificial hip into the back seat wasn't going to happen. And I didn't really like my mom doing that either.

It is the Sport Touring model, though... so it still feels like a 2 door. Actually, it's sportier that my 2-door that I traded in.

See this is the type of stereotyping that you people from the US do all the time. I don't know anyone who owns something like that.
We get around like everyone else. Either like this:
656710
or like this:
656711
(typical morning commute traffic)

See? Same as everyone else.

They're all true. Unless they're completely outlandish... then they're definitely true.
Sadly...that's more true than you might think. Some of the really crazy stuff can't be made up. Many times truth is stranger than fiction.

Congrats!

Like... the cobra effect.
"Concerned about Delhi’s venomous cobra population, the British government offered a cash bounty for each dead cobra that could be delivered. However, citizens began to breed cobras for the express purpose of killing them and then claiming the cash. When the government scrapped the award, these owners set the now-useless snakes free. The result: more cobras in Delhi than ever."

Or... Adam Rainer
Adam Rainer was the only person to be listed as both having dwarfism and gigantism.
He was a small boy who at the age of 18 was only 4' tall. The next year he was measured and was 3'8". A few years later, he developed a pituitary tumor which probably was the cause of his gigantism. By the age of 32, when the tumor was found and removed, he had grown to 7'1". He died at the age of 51 and was 7'8" at his passing.

Or... Joseph Stalin
Many people know that Adolf Hitler was nominated for the Nobel Peace prize. It wasn't a serious nomination and was quickly withdrawn. But Stalin was nominated for his efforts to end WWII... twice! (1945 & 1948) Maybe because he was upset that he didn't win that he went on to kill millions of his own countrymen.

So. Many. More...

Unfortunately not. I still keep in touch (about once/twice a year) with Nebo (Think you knew him?) and a couple others on an adhoc basis, but... most are just... gone.

I think I knew "of" him, but never had an actual conversation. There's a few I still see on social media but many have left the boards forever.

Hmmm...doesn't ring a bell. Sounds like pkondz would recognize her, though.

Nice! Looks very sporty. Love the color. Or even the colour.

Me too!

In my day, we went on foot, uphill, carrying a 50-lb. backpack....

Same. I knew of him, but never met him or conversed other than maybe in TRs we were both commenting on.

I knew he had, wasn't sure about you.
Sweet lady.

In my day, we went on foot, uphill, carrying a 50-lb. backpack....
Both ways?

Thanks. :)

Now suffering through sticker shock.

I don't really facebook. I do occasionally see former members on there, though.

I really didn't care too much what colour it was, but I'm happy with the red.

Both ways... through six feet of snow.

Morning, Fellas! Well, I'm BACK! After a fun filled week, I'm finally back home. Overall it was a great trip with family and...much needed. Because everyone was arriving at different times, we all decided to do a rolling surprise and not telling mom or dad that others were coming in. So by the time my mom's youngest brother surprised my mom, she had figured out that there was a party coming. Because dad turned 80 the previous month, we turned this party into a big surprise for both of them. We had a great time with lots of food, and I think I gained a few pounds on this trip. Unfortunately this trip wasn't without its problems. I got a notice from American Airlines at 6:30 am the day we were to leave that our flight from Boston to Dallas was delayed 3 hours due to mechanical issues. Well that wasn't going to work because we would have missed our connecting flight, and there's only a couple of flights into Roswell per day, so I had to make changes. This also meant that instead of getting a ride into Boston, I wound up having to drive to the airport and park there for a week. Boy was that expensive getting the car out. For the flight change, we wound up flying to Charlotte, NC, and then to DFW. So that worked. Coming back we wound up with an extra day of vacation because of severe weather in and around Dallas. I wasn't happy about it, but I had no choice. It was nice getting an extra day at home, but that's how the cookie crumbled.

I'll try and get to reading all the pages, but I wanted to touch on a couple of posts that I saw right under my last one.

Hello Everyone,

When I logged in, I realized it has been over 2 weeks since I last popped by. It took me a while to get caught up on all the goings on around here but it appears I missed a riveting conversation about the current value of Disney.

To put my 2 cents in, going to Disney doesn't make financial sense at all but we are doing it anyway, although with some changes. For several personal reasons, we go the first week of April every year and are going again this year. For the first time ever, we are staying off site and renting a car as it is cheaper then staying at a value. We are even taking a day or two to explore the other side of Florida (maybe the Gulf Coast or swamp boat somewhere). We are adjusting our expectations and will try to go with the flow, going on rides when we can and enjoy the atmosphere the rest of the time. Genie sucks and I refuse to pay for Genie+ or Lightning Lanes. Luckily for me, even The Kid won't wait more than 30 minutes for a ride (maybe 45 for Big Thunder). We decided that we only have so much time with The Kid before her parents become old fuddy-duddies and she doesn't want to be with us so we will go to our happy place with her while we can.

There was a time when I never would have stayed off-site, but after looking at the prices? I can't imagine staying on-site. There's no reason, no incentive, to stay on-site. I love the POFQ, but there's no way I could ever afford to stay there, even the All-Stars are pretty expensive. So I don't blame you for staying off-site.

No. But it's all the newest and latest Mexican stuff so almost as good.

And that's what counts. :teeth:

Welcome back. Glad to hear the surprise worked out.
