DIS Dads DDC XXXIV: The Original Home Of The DISDads!!!

Dads of the DIS talk about life, bacon, Disney, bacon, kids, bacon, cars, bacon, family life, and lots of other fun stuff! And beer. And bacon.
Morning, folks.

Funny... Yesterday was my 6 month review. The supervisor sits behind me for 4 hours and evaluates my performance.
Today... well, even supervisors have to maintain their proficiency. So... guess who's doing his evaluation?

As we're gearing up for annual inventory, which begins this weekend, I'm now working 10 hour days just to get ready for it. We, that is me and the other stockroom guy, get to walk around the building with a list with over 1000 lines of part numbers putting little bright yellow stickers on al the expense items that we don't have to count. This is wonderful as it'll cut down the amount of crap we have to count. The problem is, I get to walk around with bright yellow stickers on expense items that we don't have to count. Now, you will ask, "But CCT, how is that a problem?" I would then answer, "Because I have to find all the expense items before I can put a bright yellow sticker on it."
Work. But someone's gotta get paid extra to do it.

Very humbling photo. Where is that, Rob?
Do you remember why the flag was at half mast?
I had a call from work yesterday. Fortunately the call didn’t start with “there’s no easy way to say this” and end with a severance letter. It looks like I’ll be going back to work Friday. Not sure for how long, but I’ll take what I can get these days.
Phew! Good news.
Nice shot. Thanks for sharing.

Top O the Mornin Dads! Been several days but seems all are doing o.k.

Thanks to all who have served

A few images from our family's past travels to start the day.
And I might as well choose something appropriate for the day.

Been to Arlington with the family as well, very impressive despite being very somber - nice pics

I didn’t mind the time off back in June when the weather was nicer and the family were off too. I was having a bit of cabin fever this time, since the weather hard been mostly cold and wet around here and the family are all busy with work and school.
Good to hear Jeff

Wonderful pictures, thanks.

That's awesome that you got to do his evaluation. And isn't it unnerving when you have your supervisor sitting behind you watching you while you work? That would drive me nuts.

Work. But someone's gotta get paid extra to do it.

That's right, and I'll do it for the extra money.

Top O the Mornin Dads! Been several days but seems all are doing o.k.

All is well here. You doing ok?

I need to visit Arlington National Cemetery, never been.

Nah. Been around too long. There are tons of procedures that have to be followed, all in a procedures book. Guess who wrote the book?
That's right, and I'll do it for the extra money.

Not perfect, but very good to hear.
May they find ways to keep you on indefinitely.

Thank you, Goofy, for these wonderful pictures, and for reminding me that today is Veterans Day. Question: Is that mast from the USS Maine?
You are quite welcome.

The mast is indeed part of the USS Main memorial at Arlington and is the main mast retrieved from the ship during the raising/recovery effort.
Half of the ship's bell, is also present along with a pair Spanish mortars taken by Admiral Dewey from Cavite Arsenal, Manila, and an anchor that was manufactured specifically for the first memorial before the recovery efforts.

Not to monopolize the club house, but I've got more images from the memorial and Arlington in general if you'd like to see a few. I'm an amateur historian, with emphasis in naval history, so that was a site I particularly wanted to experience while we had the chance.

An interesting turn of events.

Too bad your personality is incapable of using that situation unfairly to your advantage (unless you've got me completely snowed), but the notion could inspire some fairly amusing fictional novel plot lines.

All of the images were taken in 2010 at Arlington National Cemetery just across the Potomac from Washington DC.

It was originally the estate and plantation owned by Robert E Lee, but was confiscated during our Civil War and established as the primary military cemetery of the nation.

Do you remember why the flag was at half mast?
Being part of the National Cemetery, the flag is flown at half mast on any day where a funeral or internment occurs. And that is generally every day.

The building in the background was the Lee's mansion.

It was a very moving experience. I highly recommend that anyone who has the chance should experience it for themselves. It offers a chances for reflection, learning, and even something akin to relaxation (but it's hard to really explain that without being there)

I wouldn't complain. And Admiral Dewey was promoted to Admiral of the Navy, what would be considered a 5 star admiral is today, for his actions in victory in Manila Bay during the Spanish - American War.

That's right, and the Union Army started using it as a cemetery in order that the Lee family could never use it as a home again. Kind of messed up, but when you think about what was going on at the time you can understand. And the Lee family eventually got paid for it, though they had to sue the Government to get their money.

I can imagine the amount of funerals that happen there a day.

I need to go.[/QUOTE]

I did mention something along those lines to him... but we both knew I was joking.

Or.... was I??? 🤔
All of the images were taken in 2010 at Arlington National Cemetery just across the Potomac from Washington DC.
Saw from others where it was (Arlington), but somehow never knew it was close to DC. Shoot. I could've gone, myself.

I knew that!!
Which, not bragging, but... I would bet not very many Canadians know.

Ah. Makes sense. Nice gesture.
The building in the background was the Lee's mansion.
Scrolled back up... I'm surprised! I expected it to be much smaller.
Let me guess, you? :teeth:

Morning all. Had an interview for seasonal help with UPS. I really enjoyed working for UPS while I was in college, and really hope I can first get the temporary gig and it would later become a permanent gig.

Morning, Gents! Hope all is well. Not sure what the final high temp was yesterday, but it was a beautiful day yesterday here in the land of Cape Cod. Now, you will ask, "But CCT, how is that a problem?" I would then answer, "Because I have to find all the expense items before I can put a bright yellow sticker on it." this is rather hard as we have no idea where some of this stuff is. Oh well, it's a job that's paying 2 hours of overtime a day. :thumbsup2 Well, gents, have a good day and we'll chat throughout.

TTFN

Sounds like a long day. 2 hours of OT pay a day is nice, until you see that tax bill. :scared1:

Terrific news about the job.

Really? The first post was on Veteran's Day?

Morning all. Had an interview for seasonal help with UPS. I really enjoyed working for UPS while I was in college, and really hope I can first get the temporary gig and it would later become a permanent gig.

That would be cool. If UPS where you are is anything like they are here, they are backed up and in serious need of help. So I hope you get it.

Sounds like a long day. 2 hours of OT pay a day is nice, until you see that tax bill. :scared1:

Right?! Not looking forward to that.

Really? The first post was on Veteran's Day?

Yup...

I wouldn't complain.
Then I may clean up a few more images and post them up later.
We'll see if I can get organized enough to do so
(and if no one else objects, of course)

And Admiral Dewey was promoted to Admiral of the Navy, what would be considered a 5 star admiral is today, for his actions in victory in Manila Bay during the Spanish - American War.
Yup.
And...
You can still tour his Flagship (USS Olympia) in Philadelphia if you get the opportunity. Only ship of her type and era still in existence. A visit is on my personal bucket list if I can get up to Philly at some point.

Also true.
But you can see how it went down that way.

Actually, not a huge number of US citizens know that.

Wonderful pictures, thanks.

Thanks. First one isn't mine but the other two are.

Please do! I love looking at that stuff.

I interviewed against 15 people. 3 minute interviews. I hope they have lots of openings.

Then I may clean up a few more images and post them up later.
We'll see if I can get organized enough to do so
(and if no one else objects, of course)

Always enjoy pictures. Besides, it's not like anyone is keeping stats anymore. :lmao:

I'm impressed, sir.

Now that's what she said!

I was feeling pretty good for a second, but then she did this:

Had an interview for seasonal help with UPS. I really enjoyed working for UPS while I was in college, and really hope I can first get the temporary gig and it would later become a permanent gig.
Good luck! Did I miss something or is this the first you've posted about this particular job?
(and if no one else objects, of course)
Of course not!

Now that's cool!!! Man! I went through there!!!
Actually, not a huge number of US citizens know that.
Really! Figured it'd be... hmmm... like Betsey Ross and the flag, perhaps.

Yep, "Stats" ain't happenin' no mo'.

But pictures are doable.
Y'all don't stop me, so you get's 'em.

Now, I took these a good while back when digital tech was still developing (so to speak). I've cleaned them up a bit with what humble tools I have, and while the quality isn't stellar, they'll give you an idea of whats going on.

We'll start with a few more images of the USS Maine Memorial

537887

Entrance to the mausoleum at the base of the monument. The ship's bell was torn in half by the explosion and the half retrieved from the harbor floor is mounted to the inner door of the entrance (a little hard to make out in this image)

A couple of shots showing details of the two Spanish guns.

537892

537893

A more detailed image of the Canadian Cross of Sacrifice

537899

A gift from Canada in the 1920s honoring those Americans who fought with the Canadian military in The Great War. It was later amended to also honer those who served in the Second war and Korea.

The Memorial for Women in Military Service for America

537901

This on the eastern edge of the park and was originally built as "The Hemicycle" to serve as the main entrance. Never actually use as the entrance, it was redesigned and repurposed in the 1990s. Unfortunately the fountain and reflecting pool were undergoing maintenance when we were there.

A more detailed look at the Tomb of the Unknown Solderer

Inspection...

A more expansive look at the JFK grave site
537905

Contrasted by the nearby site for Robert Kennedy

But there is more to RFKs memorial as well including a reflecting pool

But again, you had a limited schedule and more pressing destinations in mind at the time.

I have a in mind a loop up toward Philly via the Delmarva peninsula and heading back home via Gettysburg and the Shenandoah. But it'll have to wait until things get settled down again before I try that one.

Really! Figured it'd be... hmmm... like Betsey Ross and the flag, perhaps.
Another of our myths, but a good story none the less.

But pictures are doable.

Those are great. Funny... I saw the eternal flame in your first set and thought "Like JFK's"... but didn't think it actually was. Not sure why not.
But again, you had a limited schedule and more pressing destinations in mind at the time.
Well.... this is true.
Never enough time, even with driving 15 hours a day.
I have a in mind a loop up toward Philly via the Delmarva peninsula and heading back home via Gettysburg and the Shenandoah. But it'll have to wait until things get settled down again before I try that one.
Yeah... I'm pretty much stuck until Covid is over. Whenever that is. Sure hope the stats on Pfizer hold up.
Another of our myths, but a good story none the less.
Is it a myth? I thought she did have input.

Morning fellas from a sunny and bright mother country. Not much to tell ya.

I'm surprised! I expected it to be much smaller.

I hope they have lots of openings.

It seems my work here is done, over to you Jeff, to monitor the rest of the day's posts. Congrats on re-entering the world of commerce. May your emails be minimal and your paid slacking off time be extended.

Have a good one all, from the 13 year old.
