Interesting drive in to work today. Almost killed myself. Apparently I was driving a tad fast for conditions and fish-tailed in the rain on a pretty major road this morning. No other cars were involved and I'm not hurt (although I threw two hubcaps in the process). At one point the car turned all the way to 9 o'clock. I seemed to correct the skid but then whipped around past 12 o'clock to where I was pointed towards 3 o'clock. I kept it in the grass median the whole time.

But here's the question. How do you correct a skid? I know the old saying about turn in the direction of the skid. I think I did it right, my co-worker thinks I did it wrong. So when I was driving and the car turned 90 degrees to my left (9 o'clock) I turned the wheel back up towards my original 12 o'clock heading. That's right, isn't it? If I had turned towards 6:00 that seems like it wouldn't have been the right move. I also jammed on the breaks but I think I should have actually accelerated a little.

What's the right move?

You were mostly right. I can't speak for any of the new-fangled vehicles with their fancy-pants electronic stability control whos-it-what-its, but steering into the skid is the proper technique. For example, if your back end is coming around on on your right, turn the wheels to the right. This keeps the front tires aligned in the direction the momentum of the vehicle is going, allowing the rear end of the car to lose it's momentum naturally, and slide back into place.
Jamming on the brakes is the bad thing. It may seem like the thing to do - trying to stop the car from moving, but you actually want it the tires to keep rolling. You're on a slick surface - the car isn't going to stop no matter what you do to the breaks. Take you foot off the gas, but don't stomp the breaks. A light break tap may help, but you don't want to lock up the tires.

Oh, and glad to hear you're OK. Take the rest of the day off to recover. Take 4 strips of bacon. If you still don't feel better, eat a few more.
Barry is right for the most part. I taught drivers ed for 6 years. Supposedly with ABS you can break and turn the wheel but I don't recommend trying it at higher speeds. Also I found out the hard way that automatic four wheel drive will not kick in until you have almost recovered from a skid and will pull you right into the ditch and onto your roof.

New moon tomorrow. I have to know these things. Some of the locals still plant and harvest by the signs.

Does that stuff work or is it more superstition?

Evening guys..

Saw oldest DD Amelia off to camp this evening, to a Guides Camp a couple hours North of here, her first tent camping experience! Afterwards dropping in to see my parents and we took them out for dinner, nothing special, just Swiss Chalet, but they appriciated the gesture.

Evening guys. Spent the morning at the hospital getting a endoscopy (scope of my esphogous) done. All looks good, and the drugs were tremendous. :thumbsup2 Now I get to lie on the couch and have DW wait on me. Great stuff! ;)

Did that in November, except they suspect other issues and was stuck in the hospital for 10 hours for nothing. :headache: Glad all is clear.

I'm here! I am a Dad, planning away to get my 2 princesses to see their favorite princesses, Rapunzel and Ariel. I would love to be counted among the DIS Dads. I live in Utah, and am starting to plan for a mid-March-early April Trip to Florida to take my girls and wife on a Disney Cruise and to spend some time in the World! :thumbsup2

Welcome !!

I can't prove it does or doesn't simply because of the problem of planting at different phases of the moon and providing uniform environmental conditions. If I had access to controlled environment growth chambers it would be an interesting study but nobody would pay to have it done. As long as they think it works, who am I to argue.

Take your air compressor with you and really clean up.

Watching The Incredibles and some hockey. Good times!

Incredibles are one of my favorite Disney movies.

DW is on call for work and swears the number of calls go up during full moons. Like you, I'm not aware of any research to support these claims, but those who rely on anecdotal evidence will rarely be persuaded by the research.

Want to pass on that we did meet Briana yesterday while she was at her cart in new fantasy land. She was smiling away and working hard. Told her DISdads say high an that more were coming over the next weeks. Told her her dad was very proud of her and good luck cause the lady behind me in line was getting a bit antsy. She was working a cart between Gastons Tavern and Little Mermaid attraction. I will pm you when we get back in week to get you a couple I pics I took for ya.

Have not been able to stay current so to the rest of the Dads - GO HAWKS, welcome to the new guys, prayers to any that need them and enjoy the family time Dads.

The data at the hospital I work at, strongly shows an uptick in 'weird' cases in our ER for times of the full moon.

Or at least it seems that way. :)

Good point about the auto 4wd. I never use the auto setting. Always either on or off. In my opinion, if it is on auto, by the time you slip enough for it to kick on it will be too late to help. And like you said, it can't exactly kick into 4wd when the wheels aren't going the same speed...

OK guys - here's an actual Disney question....(sorry for going back to on-topic for once.. ;))

On our next trip (in 7 days :cool1:) we're staying offsite. DW and I are thinking we are going to want to take afternoon breaks so our DD's can get some rest and we can escape the heat for a while.

But, in talking, we realized taking a break on our MK days might be a little cumbersome with the fact that we have to jump on a monorail or ferry just to get to our car and then drive 20 min to our condo.

Is there anywhere near MK that we could go to for some A/C and a relatively quite place for my DD's to nap for a little while?

My only thought was the contemporary 2nd floor area. It always seemed to be rather quiet.

Any other thoughts?
