Interesting drive in to work today. Almost killed myself. Apparently I was driving a tad fast for conditions and fish-tailed in the rain on a pretty major road this morning. No other cars were involved and I'm not hurt (although I threw two hubcaps in the process). At one point the car turned all the way to 9 o'clock. I seemed to correct the skid but then whipped around past 12 o'clock to where I was pointed towards 3 o'clock. I kept it in the grass median the whole time.

But here's the question. How do you correct a skid? I know the old saying about turn in the direction of the skid. I think I did it right, my co-worker thinks I did it wrong. So when I was driving and the car turned 90 degrees to my left (9 o'clock) I turned the wheel back up towards my original 12 o'clock heading. That's right, isn't it? If I had turned towards 6:00 that seems like it wouldn't have been the right move. I also jammed on the breaks but I think I should have actually accelerated a little.

What's the right move?

You were mostly right. I can't speak for any of the new-fangled vehicles with their fancy-pants electronic stability control whos-it-what-its, but steering into the skid is the proper technique. For example, if your back end is coming around on on your right, turn the wheels to the right. This keeps the front tires aligned in the direction the momentum of the vehicle is going, allowing the rear end of the car to lose it's momentum naturally, and slide back into place.
Jamming on the brakes is the bad thing. It may seem like the thing to do - trying to stop the car from moving, but you actually want it the tires to keep rolling. You're on a slick surface - the car isn't going to stop no matter what you do to the breaks. Take you foot off the gas, but don't stomp the breaks. A light break tap may help, but you don't want to lock up the tires.

Oh, and glad to hear you're OK. Take the rest of the day off to recover. Take 4 strips of bacon. If you still don't feel better, eat a few more.

Barry is right.

Yes... I just said that. :rolleyes1

It sounds to me like you did it the right way. You probably don't want to hit the brakes or the gas, unless you just want to take advantage of the opportunity and light up those tires and show off your mad drifting skills. :thumbsup2

Thanks. That's what I thought. I've only had to do that two or three times in my life so it's good to know I did it right. And if anyone finds two hubcaps for a 2003 Camry XLE, send them back to Richmond.

Morning guys. No news is good news as my boss said the closed door meeting really had nothing to do with him or any of us. His boss just needed an office to take care of an issue while she was over here. :thumbsup2

Granted, I had my eye mostly on the hockey game last night (Go Hawks!) but from what I did see is that Miami is still struggling with identity crisis. Bosch thinks he's a guard, DWade must be injured or something because he has not been that good in the playoffs. Lebron can't be asked to guard Parker as that is one of the few guys who will wear him down. Miami seems to be going however their role players are going. Lebron will get his no matter what but for them to win at least 2 of Ray Allen, Haslem, and Cole need to be on fire.

In the end I think Duncan gets one last title and rides off into the sunset.

Glad it was nothing. And a hearty congratulations to the Blackhawks. Looks like we may get to bet a few Dole Whips on the finals as soon as the B's take care of Pittsburgh.

Agreed. I think Miami is still trying to figure things out. Mostly because I could coach that team as well as Spolstra (sp?). That dude needs to go and fast. If they had a decent coach, it would be a dynasty in Miami. Without the right direction I think the Spurs win it.

Curse you for taunting me with an awesome video that I can't see!!!! :headache: :sad2: :rolleyes1

I can see it!

Your turn was correct, but braking is not. Accelerating through the turn and correction limits the additional sliding and allows you to keep control. Once you brake, the tires start to slide and then you lose control of the vehicle.

I actually used to drive stock race cars at Loudon Speedway in NH in my younger years. Unfortunately I speak from experience on going fast and having the car sliding. No major crashes though.

I have one for you, when you are breaking the time barrier, is it, a jump to the right, then a step to the left, or the other way around?

Well, I can't watch it, but that does sound crazy awesome.

On a MK day a few years ago, my then 1.5 yr old was crying like crazy and wouldn't stop. Wife took her to Hall of Presidents and she sat there with her for three consecutive shows while me and the non-crying kids hit haunted mansion and a couple mountains. The kind CMs let her just sit there because my daughter had fallen asleep. Plus my wife was very excited to have learned so much about presidents.

Wow...talk about taking one for the team!

Turn right to go left! Getting shades of Doc Hudson here.

Flip on the Flux capacitor, and rev it up to 88 mph. After that, it doesn't matter what direction you're going.

Welcome Home!:thumbsup2

I don't know, but I'm glad it wasn't worse!
Well, I'm sure we can all agree on one thing. The guy that the designed that road it clearly at fault.

Turn into the skid, not the skid marks. Barry forgot to add that last piece.

That's more like it.
