Hello all. Hope you're doing well.

Just stopped by checking on a couple of other threads and thought I'd say hi.
Haven't been on the boards much the past week or so.

STOPHER!!!!!! :wave2:

BRIAN...... welcome to the old age club!!! hope the neck feels beter soon.

i was going to edit "beter" but i decided i like it. lol

I posted this on the disdads.com boards, but thought I would try for some opinions here, also.

Well, I am at a bit of a dilemma and wanted to get some opinions:

First of all I have to say that I love my job. I work with great people and the hours are great (Mon - Fri, 8-5.) I am an IT server/systems administrator. I like to think I am a very important part of the company - I am the resident virtualization guru (VMWare), head up the network monitoring, and am the 'go to' guy for major IT issues that need to be solved. Really, the only bad points are that it is not a huge company, so my pay is not quite up to industry standard levels and not much room for advancement.

At my nephew's birthday party, I was told that an acquaintance (my sisters' mother-in-law's stepson - how's that for obscure?) works for a large company looking to hire some IT people - Strategic Client Architects. It is going into a little different type of job, but uses my experience well. It is almost a sales-like position - or at least a lot of customer interaction. It is a huge pay increase (over 50% more than what I make now) and with the bonuses - almost twice as much. (More Disney trips!)

I don't know if I should inquire and see about interviewing for the new job (if my skills fit), or just be satisfied with a pretty great job with the lower pay. I know that the current company I am with will have a tough time replacing me (not meant to sound egotistical - just that I have so much knowledge of the current setup/situation, it would be a long transition for someone to learn it all.) I guess I could try to get an offer, then go to the current boss and state the facts (that I love working where I am, but the pay differential is huge) and see if they might increase my pay - but I doubt they would get close to a match in pay. But those situations aren't ideal. I feel a loyalty to my current employer (we are a tight-knit 'family'), but how do you turn down a potential salary of twice what you make?

I have some other thoughts/opinions, but wanted to start with that and see what y'all think.

I understand your situation... and my suggestion, is GO for the interview.

You never know, when you leave, you may be able to stay on as a consultant part time weekends or after hours for a short period of time, and then make 2.5 x your current salary (between the two).

I was in a very similar situation almost two years ago. I was at a job that I enjoyed and was thought of well. An opprotunity came up where my salary would virtually double. I was hesitant to do the interview, but decided it couldn't hurt to at least get some experience.

I went through three interviews and all of them went well and they offered me the job. We had a tough call andwe prayed about it for a few days. It was hard to tell my boss I was leaving because we had a great relationship. On the other hand this current job is one of the best things that has ever happened to us as a family. I work with amazing people and the company goes out of their way to take care of us.

My advice is to go through the steps, see where it leads and if you are a man of faith ask for guidance. The wors thing that happens is you come away with a better appreciation for what you currently have.

Thanks Dave! Also the "beter" feels good here, there has been a distict lack of zerfonics lately.

Seniority. :lmao:

I don't know, reading on here and over there , it seems to be catching on. Don't mind the caps. I'm on my iPhone. Lol

It's not the CAPS Dave, not even the correct spelling.

It's the proper use of punctuation that is really bothering me!

:rotfl2: :lmao: :rotfl2:

John, I can't believe I'm going to say this but I agree with Brian. Go for the interview. It never hurts to look around and read the menu.

Time to call it a Friday. No resolution to the drama at work. I will have to wait and see what Monday brings. :sad2:

:lmao: You can always tell when I post from my iPhone. I have to figure out how to get on " over there " from my phone next.

Now I KNOW this isn't really Dave.

- CAPS
- Correct Spelling
- Punctuation
and HE AGREE'S WITH ME? :scared1:

I think we have to send out a search party!

Ugggg... sorry to hear.

But hey, it's the weekend and your in Kentucky... a bottle of Burboun will wash away all those worries.

John, that indeed is a tough situation. I would be worried that if you approached your current boss with the potential pay increase with the other job, that they may look bad on you for even looking elsewhere.

In my case, if I were to go with to my boss saying I have the opportunity to make more money elsewhere, he wouldn't think twice about saying goodbye to me instantly.

But, the opportunity to make a 50% increase in salary would certainly be worth a look. Especially if the hours and travel time are similar.

Good Luck!

Thanks. I am going to send them my resume (heck, I may not even get an interview.) I was just trying to plan ahead for worst (best?) case scenario. :lmao:

Sounds like you're in a place where you love what you do and love the people you work with. So I'd be cautious about moving on. The money at the other place sounds fantastic, but it won't mean much if you're miserable. I'd probably look into the other position a bit, and there's nothing wrong with mentioning it to your boss to see if they'll do anything for you. But I wouldn't leave something I love unless I was sure the new job was really a great fit. I'm sure you'll get all sorts of opinions!

I figure if I can get an interview, I could find out a lot more than what I know now to make a better decision. Thanks. :thumbsup2

Tough call. I understand your point of being happy where you are and wanting to be loyal, but you really have to look at what is best for you and your family. I think you owe it to yourself to at least look into the possiblity more. It never hurts to talk to them and interview. You should always remember that the interview is a place for you to ask them questions as well. You might find out that it is something you're just not that interested in, or it might feel like a perfect fit. There's only one way to find out.

Good luck, whatever you decide to do.

Thanks. I agree about asking questions in the interview (if I even get one.) I was going to mention in the O.P. about making decision that is best for my family - I figured I would hear that. Good advice. :thumbsup2

Agreed! Great idea. :thumbsup2

Great words of wisdom. :worship: Thanks for your input.

I will update my resume this weekend and see what happens next. Maybe I get an interview, or maybe I don't have the right 'tools' for the job. This is kind of new to me - going for a job while I have a job. :) I am usually looking for a new job after a layoff or 'downsizing' and having to take anything I can get. I think this can help boost my confidence IF I get an interview, and feel less pressure.

Thanks again, guys!

Agree with others that it doesn't hurt to explore other options. Good luck with any decision you make.

Congrats on the double bonus from FedEx today! :thumbsup2

BTW, checked out the sight lines on the Miami Marlins site, nice location for the tix, I hope I get down to buy you a beer or 2 from those seats!

Season ticket seats are in the next section over. But they will still be good sight lines. When you are down lets go to a game. You buy the beers, I'll get the dogs.

What you have right there CJ, is a GREAT mail day! Big Thumb----->:thumbsup2

Wow, that's got to be the best mail day ever! :thumbsup2

Yea it was a good day today. Busy time coming up. Trip to NY and then Opening day. Can't wait. As I said many times this year, my life doesn't suck.
