DIS Dads DDC XVII - Leap year edition

I hate to go back ON topic, but here goes...

I'm running into a dilemma.

For years, my family and I have vacationed with my wife's parents and sister's, etc... in Daytona Beach for Spring Break.

This year we broke from that tradition, somewhat controversially, to spend a week at WDW (37 Days!)

My original intention was to go back to Daytona next year as we always have. However, since the birth of the convention in January, I investigated different ticket options and looked at the cost of AP's vs. buying park tickets for this years trip and the convention. During this investigation, I can to realize that next Spring Break is actually a week BEFORE this year's.

This would mean, that if we upgraded to AP's this year, we would be able to use them for this year's trip, the convention, and next year's spring break.

I broke down the numbers and realized we would be saving like $700 if we went the AP route vs. buying park tickets. I'm pretty sure I've got my DW on board with my new plan for spending next year at WDW. But I'm running into some animosity from my in-laws and somewhat from my DW about "missing out" on vacationing with her parents/family.

So this would be two years in a row that we won't be with her parents/family for vacation.

I've offered her family the option of renting a house next spring and having them all in Orlando instead of Daytona. But, my in-laws are older and can't do all the walking that a full week at WDW would provide. Plus, I have a feeling they don't quite want to give up that beach vacation.

Any ideas?!?

Buy the AP for yourself. Use it on this trip, come to the convention by yourself, then take a few day trips to Disney while your DW is entertaining her parents on the beach.

Congrats on anniversary. I will trump you. DW's birthday is Oct 12, which always coincides with our Fall Disney trip. So, every year I tell her I bought her a trip to WDW or take her to restaurant of her choice at WDW. Darn the luck.

I love how you have "missing out" in quotations.

That's a tough situation. That's a prime opportunity to get AP's and spend some quality time at WDW at a pretty significant savings. On the other hand, gotta keep the other half happy. I'd be leaning heavily towards AP's and getting a house in Orlando... they can either come or they can do their beach thing, but at least the offer is out there. Either way, good luck.

Bummer. Why does family always have to get in the way of vacation?
We've run in to the same thing a little too. We just had to explain that we were starting to create some of our own traditions. Maybe we'll still vacation with the whole family, but at times we'll break off and do our own thing.

Tim has a good idea. Would that work?

Daytona isn't a real long drive from Orlando (I think it's about an hour and a half, give or take). So get the AP, use it this year and for the DisDads convention, then use it next year for a couple of days at least. You can stay at Daytona and spend a couple of days at WDW, or vice versa. Invite the in-laws for one day at WDW--that way they can still rest for most of the week.

Vacationing with my wife's family, aka her older brother and his family has never proven to be anything but a huge hassle. We took a week down to Myrtle Beach between Christmas and new years one time, against my will, and on top of all the usual crap of having four families together, ie, the In Laws had two families of friends along, we lost our dog in a kennel because they staffed it with kids over the holiday weekend and they didn't no how to feed him properly and he died of bloat (twisted intestine). We would then go camping for four days at Knoebel's Grove in Pa and there was always some issue, again with multiple other families along. Finally, having spent part of ever summer from the time i was born until I was seventeen at the jersey shore, i wanted my son to enjoy the same experiences so we would rent my aunt and uncles house near the beach for two weeks during the end of august. Without telling me, she invited her brother and his family to drop by for a few days. This went on for a several years until her sister in law, (whom we think is bipolar) flipped out because my son and I weren't spending every moment with them, regardless that we went everywhere they wanted to go. We haven't seen them in nearly seven years. Families, particularly in-laws can be a HUGE pain in the A**. You are a friggin' adult and allowed to make your own decisions. Do it and if they don't want to be a part of it, to effin' bad.

And yes, I spend a great deal of my time to myself and prefer it that way.

I'm sure my DD's would be majorly upset if Daddy went to WDW without them next Spring Break.....oh wait....Daddy is already going to WDW without them in January!!

I presented the house option to the MIL and FIL last night. They had talked about doing 2 weeks in Daytona at one time since both of them are retired. And I presented the option to spend that second week in Orlando in the rental house with us. Then they could stay at the house and veg' or go with us into the parks for a day or two.

Turns out, they actually decided to tour the Carolina's and Georgia for the first week.

I just don't think they want to give up their Daytona Beach R&R Vacation.

Maybe Tim's option is the way to go?!?

Might work. And DW was thinking of coming with me to the convention. So maybe I'd upgrade her to AP's and we could sneak away from the kids for a day or two in the Spring again!

DW says at dinner last night...."It's not really a "convention" so much as a reunion." I said "Well, it can't technically be a reunion since we've never been union'd!"

Yeah we've made the drive from Daytona to WDW the last 4 years. It's not bad - just makes it hard to get there by RD. Especially since the parks open at 8am the week we go.

I love my in-laws - but let's just say I'm not heart broken by "missing-out" on vacationing with them this year.

Although they are meeting up with us for a day while we're there.

This will sound incredibly selfish, so hear me out. Your family - you, DW, children - is priority. It has taken me 12 years of marriage to convince DW of this and she is finally on board. After we married, we visited my parents and an aunt (seperate trips) a month before or after a holiday, when convenient for us. She thought it was horrible I didn't see them more. But, we spent the holidays at her divorced parents' different locations, driving to one house Christmas Eve and the other Christmas Day - always trying to just find time for us. One holiday, we went to her dad's sister's' house, and her dad didn't even show up. She was devastated, but it still took several years more. So, do what is best for your family first. If you can add in the extra time with parents, siblings, inlaws, etc then great. But, in my opinion, DW and my dds always come first. Good luck with whatever you decide.

We did hit park capacity last year 1 day, but that is the only time it has ever been that crowded in Oct when we have been there. September works good because it is even less crowded, cheaper on points, and still MNSSHP. I do want to go in the other months that we haven't been yet.
