Hi, guys! Just stopping by after crazy busy week (where I had to fly to Chicago and then cover a 24-hour shift for my boss who forgot a trade...). Promise to catch up later. (Welcome to the new guys, hope everyone is doing okay, etc)

Semi-serious question for the group. Looking for the opinion of a thoughtful group of men (and yes, I came here!). I have an acquaintance here in town with three kids about my kids ages. Our kids play sports together and I see him about 2 times per week at games. However, I've never been to his house, he's never been to mine, and although we're friendly, we're not friends per se. However, he's well respected in the community, active in our church, and has a successful local family business here in town. He's also going through a bitter divorce with a wife who's battling (unsuccessfully) against alcoholism. My overall opinion of him is that he's a generally good guy.

He calls me this afternoon to borrow some money. He needs $100 to get through until Wednesday, and he'll give me a check that I can cash then. His parents are out of town, and so he can't ask them, and seemed very apologetic about it.

What would you do? I'll tell you what I did after hearing the responses.

If it didn't hurt me financially to the point where I was going to have to change how I went about my life or provide for my family I would do it (that withstanding everyone has a different amount that is). You seem to have a reasonable read on his character and myself I would feel like beverly if I knew could help someone and didn't.

Admit nothing. Deny everything. Make Counteraccusations.:cool2:

You would think that as many police type shows are on tv that people would be smart and stop giving interviews to the police. Of course, Anthony was acquitted and we'll see what happens in the Zimmerman and Sandusky trials. My neighbor is one of our D.A.R.E. officers and when he asks me how I'm doing, I'll occasionally yell "talk to my lawyer" just to see if he's paying attention.

I generally wouldn't want to get involved in that.

And I haven't read any further, to see other peoples comments, but I suspect that people will say "It's only $100, not alot to lose"...

Here's where I differ... I fell that's kind of a "feeler" loan... to see if he found someone who he could rely on to always go to.

I remember once an interview I heard with Poker Pro (and Canadian) - Daniel Negreanu who said, he'd rather lend someone $10,000 as that you know you will get back. As for $100 you may never see it again, and when you go asking... your the cheapo idiot.

So I would not lend him the money.

I'd almost prefer to take him out for a dinner and pick up the tab.

That is a difficult one. I rarely loan people money, but if I do, inside my own head, I consider it a gift. I don't tell them that, but that way, if they don't pay me back, then i don't have to hate them for being a mooch. With that said, I don't have $100 to loan someone. I would have to talk with DW for that amount of money. If it was $20, then under those circumstances, I may have. And, I would tell them to cash their own check and just return the cash.

I give to those that are in need, or ask, what I can (which isn't much anymore). I figure God can sort it out. When I was doing training with the R&D group that I went oversees with we got dropped off on a Friday in downtown Phoenix with no money in our pocket and they said they would see us Monday morning. Gives you a different perspective.

If you attend the same church, I'd refer him there. Most churches have a mercy fund or deacons' fund to help out in a pinch. I also believe there are spiritual benefits to receiving mercy as opposed to a loan. Just my $.02.

Part of me is leery when people ask for money. But, I always try to think outside of myself in those situations. If it was me I would give him the money. It may sound naive, but I think those situations will be recounted one day when we face our God.

If it didn't hurt me financially to the point where I was going to have to change how I went about my life or provide for my family I would do it (that withstanding everyone has a different amount that is). Thanks, guys. I like the idea of referring him to the church, but I didn't think of it on the fly and he presented it in such a way that he needed cash (in a hurry). As usual, you've touched upon many of my thoughts and better put into words some others that were bumping around.

I ended up giving him the money. My rationale was that there was probably a decent chance that I'd never see the money again, but I had it and could afford to give it (and not worry about getting it back). There must have been some reason he was coming to me. Possibly too embarrassed to ask his closer friends, or perhaps he doesn't have any closer friends after this bitter divorce. If he had to go that far away from his close circle, he must really be in trouble or ashamed, so I viewed it as an act of charity on my part.

Another back story to this guy, I actually took care of his son in the ICU a few years back. The boy was horrendously sick, easily could have died, and I literally spent all night at his bedside. He's completely recovered now and doing very well. I suspect that may of been part of why he came to me now.

Thanks again for your thoughtful comments! :thumbsup2 Gotta catch up on Mad Men and Game of Thrones while checking out Carl's feed!

Maybe you'll turn into Venom from Spiderman. On that topic, the movie version was not the real origin of the Venom suit. Anyone know (without looking at Google)?

I'm not certain on this but I'm pretty sure Venom was a guy named Eddie:confused3

Wasn't it an alien that attached to the space shuttle? Or was that the movie?

Eddie was his third host (after Spider man and JJ Jameson's son). Right?

That was the movie. Originally, it came from the Marvel Secret Wars series. Spiderman, X-Men, Hulk, Capt, Fan Four, as well as their nemesis from the different series are transported to the other side of the galaxy by the Beyonder. There, they must do battle with one another. Spiderman loses a battle and goes for a "suit repair" on the foreign world, and walking into the wrong room, gets the Venom suit.

Wonder if a new Avengers sequel could ever incorporate all this?

I doubt any of the upcoming movies would have any of this, mostly due to movie rights. Marvel has movie rights to Cap, Hulk, and the rest of the Avengers. Sony has Spidey, Punisher, and Ghost Rider. Fox has the X-men and the Fantastic Four. As long as the other studios keep making movies with those characters, Marvel can't have them in theirs. An exception to this that I've read about is Quick Silver and Scarlet Witch. They can appear in both X-Men and Avengers movies, as long as they aren't referred to as mutants or Magneto's kids in the Avengers universe.

And I am aware that Quick Silver doesn't have a space in his name, but for some reason, it's censored here...

Dinner's at Glory Days. It's pub food, but Good Pub Food! And they have Fat Tire on draft! :drinking1

I've heard nothing but good things about Fat Tire. Bro had it when he was out west and raved about it.

We like following along with the drama at work. It's like our own little Canadian Soap Opera. :thumbsup2
on 2000!

Except no returns from the dead, and no evil twins. Oh wait, scratch that, there is a guy in the West Toronto store system who looks uncannily like me. I was paired with him at a golf tourny years ago (My then-manager thought it to be hillarious. Pretty nice guy, guess that makes ME the evil twin.:lmao::stir:

Here Fishy Fishy Fishy!
FishyFishyFishy.jpg

Oh man, that used to be a running joke with an old group of friends of mine :rotfl2::rotfl2:

Nah... you just need one of these :lmao::

icap-mp3-player-hat-geek-gadget.jpg

My brother'd kill for one of those :rotfl2:

IF mental health was required for days off, I probably shouldn't be working.

My head's been in a fog all day, I need a vacation, but the cabin's still 5-6 weeks away. Booked a physical with the doctor just before that too, see if we can figure out the "feeling crummy all the time" out.

Beverly of a day. Up even before David I think, at least I posted before him.

Nothing went right at work and didn't accomplish diddly. Then I managed to lock myself out of the house tonight when I decided to run down to the office to check a couple of emails to try to be productive to make up for the day. Remembered in that ohno second right after the door shut. 99.99% of the time the keys are in my pocket but not tonight so I had to bust a screen and crawl in through a window. No loss on the screen because it had duct tape holding it together (the university loves their tenants) but moving my little 2 drawer file cabinet under the window so I could crawl in I managed to put a 2 inch scratch in the car with the corner of the cabinet. :sad2::mad: The car is 10 years old and not worth stressing over but we still have 3 years to pay on the other one and I need this one to last at least that long.

I don't think I will tell SWMBO when I talk with her. What she doesn't know won't hurt me. :rolleyes1

When you get home get all worked up about how you got to your car in the lot and found *that* scratch.

Ah man, beat me to it. Have the Secret Wars TPB here somewhere...

Secret Wars was a terrific series. I liked the Maximum Carnage series that spun off venom, but Secret Wars was still better. I know it won't happen, not only for all those legal restrictions above, but it would just be too much screen time. Sure, even if they eliminated some of the introductory transportation and Beyonder story, they have to share screen time with all those characters and villians. It took 2.25 hours for Avengers and it is doubtful they could include that many other characters. Still, it would be interesting to see. I'm sure they could do an abbreviated version by taking the Avengers and a few others although I'm not sure it would be as good.
