DDA's New Year's Weight Loss accountability Thread

I have a huge confession to make. I have been unable to commit to a diet or exercise plan. I have tried off and on unsuccessfully since Jan 1. I am heavier now than I was when I started. So Monday I swore off soda and sweets. If I can stay away from those two evils I should theoretically lose weight, right? I am so looking forward to Sping. I am going stir crazy here with the cold crappy weather. Hopefully spring will motivate me to exercise. I know that somewhere inside of me is a person capable of losing the weight. I did it before, 50 lbs. I have put 15 of those lbs back on and it really has only been in the last 6 months that I have done so. I know that I have been spending increasing amounts of time on the computer, either reading the boards or designing. If I weren't here I woud have been cleaning or playing with my kids. I know that I need to make lifestyle changes and I need to do so now, for the sake of my health and happiness. I am lucky enough to say that the only negative in my life is my weight issues. I need support from you all to turn the corner and get this under control. Tonight we are doing a fitness unit in cub scouts. We have to do a bunch of different activities and then redo them in a month to show improvement. I am going to lead by example, no matter how humiliating it might be. I want my kids to learn by example. If I can't get my weight gain under control I will go to the doctors and make sure that everything is ok medically. I am having a hard time understanding how I am gaining so much without really having changed my lifestyle, although typing this makes things jump right out. So here's to a new recommittment on my part.

Is any of the other's that started in January and that have stopped posting going through this too? I could really use someone to commiserate with right now. Thanks for listening and for the advice that I know that I will be receiving.

Deb

Deb, I don't know if this will help or not, but I just wanted to let you know that I completely understand. I have lost weight many times, but unfortunately have always put at least some or all back on. And everytime I have gained weight I ask myself why I was able to lose weight before, and why can't I get myself to just stick with what was working for me. Well, I still don't know what exactly motivates me, or why sometimes I can start losing weight and stick to it, and other times I just can't.

I guess all I am trying to say is that you are completely normal, and that you are doing the right things by trying, and by admitting that it is hard. If you are ready, you will do it. Try not to be too hard on yourself.

I love Paula Deen!!!! I could watch her shows all day long! I've actually tried some of her recipes, before my surgery, and they were so yummy!
Ok, Ok, I had to throw in my 2 cents even though I don't frequent this thread. ;) I live in Savannah, yes, home of Paula Deen, home of Lady and Sons. I LOVE to eat there. The gooey butter cakes are great in all of the versions that I've tried. (I think there may be enough versions for a cookbook of it's own.) Though I'm sure they are LOADED with everything not good for you! My DH loves the hoe cakes.

Thanks for all your support. I have definately taken a few steps in the right direction this week and I hope that I have the preserverance to stick with it. I had quite the workout tonight. We got there and the boys were all excited to be doing something physical rather than covering materials in the book. The parents obviously hadn't planned on participating, but with a little encouragment we got every single parent there to join in at least for some of the activities. We did a group stretch activity where we went around the circle and each person suggested which stretch to do next. There were 18 people so we did some serious stretching. We moved on to one minute activities. You do as many sit ups, pull ups and push ups as you can in one minute. We did a standing long jump and vertical jump and a dash from endline to endline of the gym. We were also supposed to do a .25 mile run/walk. Judging by our finish times I think we did at least 1/2 mile, no one knew how many laps equalled 1/4 mile so we picked 16 laps. I was impressed that I ran the entire time and other adults as well as several kids walked some of their laps. :cool1: My oldest son certainly demonstrated how out of shape he is :guilty: . Chris, Nick, Hunter and I all did everything and Colby did what he could. Now we need to practice for the next month to improve upon our times/quantities :yay: . Nick is not at all into physical exercise so this will be a challenge for him and certainly for me, but I think we can do it together. Hunter is a natural athelete and wanted to work out more when he got home :confused3 . He is 49" tall and only weighs 47 lbs. He could exercise all day everyday and it wouldn't phase him.

That sounds like you had a very fun time together! Maybe this will be a good reason to hang out as a family doing something new, and something good for all of you! :goodvibes

Deb,

Have you ever heard of Flylady? She has a saying, "Jump in right where you are!" In essence, you can't fall off the wagon, because there is no wagon. You just pick up and start each day new.

You have been such an inspiration to me with your example of how to be a good mother, and you always seem to have such a positive attitude. Now it's our turn to be your cheerleader
:cheer2:

We know you can do it! It's really hard, but I have found this group of people to be my best motivator. You all make me feel so good about myself, it makes me want to do more. I want to give that back to you! You can do this! We ALL can do this! We just have to take it one day at a time, and one craving at a time, and one foot in front of the other at a time. (did that make sense?)

I'm so glad that you joined this thread! I love reading your posts! I'm so jealous that you can eat at the Lady and Sons! That is a dream of mine. Once I get my body to where I can eat things again, I want to drag DH on a road trip. I don't know if it will work, but I'm going to try.

I did her Pumpkin Gooey Butter Cakes for Thanksgiving this year, and even though I wasn't able to eat them, everyone else said they were to die for! I'm keeping that recipe for my file. I've also got her Toffee one.

Don't go away now. You've joined our family, and we want you to stay here!

<<<<<<<<<<is so jealous that Sconnell lives in Savannah & can go to see Paula at Lady & Sons whenever she wants. I love Paula recipes but they aren't so diet friendly..except I make her basic meat loaf recipe all the time & it's 6pts for a slice & it really is the best meat loaf I've ever tried.
I would love to live in Savannah (and not just for Lady & Sons). It is such a beautiful city.
Y'all have a nice St Patty's Day tomorrow. :shamrock: Don't forget to wear your green!!!

I'm proud to say that I got the kids up and dressed in green all by my self. :thumbsup2 DH is out of town. I'm at work and there is NOBODY else here. It's totally lonely, so I'll be on the board pretty much all day. :cool1:
(BTW, since DH left on Wed, I've eaten at McDonalds 3 times. :rolleyes1 ) Though 2 were breakfast and I got a fruit & yogurt parfait.

Deb and others,

We are all behind each other. Everyone slips up from time to time. I feel like I have been getting no where reccently either. I need to start eating healthier and drink less soda and excerise. We can do this together.

Reccently I feel like a sign I saw. I am on a 30 day diet, I have already lost 16 days. I gotta get back on track. Here's to tomorrow a happier and healthier day. We can only take each day at a time and try to make good decisions on that day. :wizard: and :grouphug:

Becky

Well, I have had a really bad day. :guilty: It's that time of the month & I have eaten everything in sight this afternoon. My weekly weigh-in is tomorrow & we get a green ticket that we can use if we want a break from the scales one week. I have kept mine all these weeks, but I believe I am busting that baby out tomorrow night because of the combo of eating badly & the water weight gain that I am sure to have. That way I won't feel :sad2: & I can get right back on track tomorrow.
Hope everyone else is having a good week.
Anyone do anything fun this past weekend?

I've managed 8 days of no soda (almost completely water) and no sweets. I feel good about my what I've been eating. It is strange though I am used to cutting out carbs and I'm not trying to do so this time. I'm trying to make healthier choices, but not restricting anything except soda and sweets. I thought it would be easier to stick too. Now if I could only find time to exercise. I've been working a lot more hours the last couple of weeks so time is very limited. I will have more time starting next week. I've been so busy working and trying to keep my house in order that I haven't even found time to DIS since Friday :guilty: . I hope that everyone is able to keep on track. I'm here to cheer you on. :cheer2: :cheer2:

Awesome. Keep up the good work. :cheer2:

Posting again after a little absence. I can happily report that I am back to losing again. Another 2 pounds gone this week. That makes a total of 26 pounds lost of the 60 that I would like to take off. Considering I had to eat out each weekend and twice in the middle of the week over the past two weeks I think I did remarkably well. I am really learning exactly what it will take to do that and keep up the weight loss and eventually the maintenance.

(you know, we think we know portion control.... but I had no idea that our American portions were SO large!!! :) )

Awesome! Way to Go!!!!!! :cheer2:

I have also found out how large our American portions are and how fattening our soda is. So far, I've given up all but 1 pepsi a day, increased my daily movement (up & down stairs, parking farther from the store, etc.) and watched my portions. I've also lost 24 of the 37 pounds I want to lose. I've been doing this since the end of October. I was worried about our Disney trip but the Disney portions are at least 2 of mine now so I shared a lot of meals with Chuck & my girls. Boy, this portion control is also good on the budget!!!! ;)

I still haven't started my exercise which is next. I plan to start the beginning of April. I have 3-1/2 months to get in shape for Girl Scout camp. I'm a lifeguard, high ropes instructor, and boating instructor. I am usually the counselor for the tent unit if there is one. We sleep under the stars on nice nights, take hikes, canoe trips down the river, learn orienteering, etc. The girls at camp will be amazed at how much more energy I have this year!!!

Great job Deb & PNO4TE & UPDisney. :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2
I am glad someone had a good week. I didn't as you can tell by my above post. That's ok getting right back on track (I know I am going to have bad days in this journey & as long as my being a good girl days outnumber my being a bad girl days, I think I am still doing pretty good).

Just keep swimming :fish:, just keep swimming :fish:everybody!!!!

Did you say that you now weigh less than 148 lbs? You weigh less than I do now! Congratulations. That is wonderful. I hope you have continued success.
