DDA's New Year's Weight Loss accountability Thread

I haven't been good about posting and keeping up with this thread -- I have a hard enough time keeping up with the main DDA one, but I wanted to share something with you. I went to my annual ob/gyn check-up on Monday. When I walked in, his long-time nurse mentioned how good I look. After I was weighed, I asked how much I weighed last year. I had lost 10 pounds. Nothing as wonderful as Glynis or Ellen, but I was so happy. One of the differences is that I didn't let myself gain my "winter" weight this year, plus I've kept off the 35 pounds I lost through WW.

Deb -- thank you so much for starting this thread, and to ALL of you who are regular posters. It has made a real difference for me. Even though I haven't posted or kept up as much as I would like, it's always in the back of my mind when I have time to lurk. You guys have been great inspirations for me and I thank you!

Now, I still have to lose the other 12 pounds to get to goal, but I'm feeling good about it all right now. (Of course, the ulcers in my mouth and down my throat have really kept me from eating much the last few days.....)

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!!! I couldn't have done it without your support. :sunny:

Congratulations! I think 10 pounds is fantastic :cheer2:

DH and I are a definite go! We've already registered and paid our fees. Now we're working on where to stay. We've talked my BIL and my SIL into going with us so we're trying to find a condo or something off site (gasp) to rent that might be cheaper than a resort. Any ideas? Having never been to Orlando, I really don't know anything about it. I would love any help.

Yay! We're up to 6 of us with our DHs! :) I don't know much about the Orlando area as far as offsite places, but just make sure you leave plenty of time on marathon day. I read somewhere that traffic coming into the world that weekend is atrocious.... but obviously people do it all the time -- just be aware of it!

If I hear of any ideas where to go, I'll let you know!

Ellen,

Would you mind passing along the training plans from John Bingham? I've been following the plan that Karen sent along a long time ago, but I feel like I need something else. Is Marathoning for Mortals a book? I feel good about things, as I've brought me speed to just over a 16 minute mile since January, so I think I'm on track with the speed thing. I just need to continue to build up endurance.

Thanks!

Glynis -- I'm not Ellen, and this is not John Bingham... but it might help anyway! :rotfl: I think his stuff is great from what I've read, but I thought I'd pass this site along as well so maybe you guys will have 2 things to consider, or (as Kyle and I did), kind of tweak and combine different programs.

http://www.halhigdon.com/halfmarathon/index.htm

There are links there to beginners and walkers... I found them a little faster paced than the other training schedule posted, but still doable.

Hi Glynis, Yes, Marathoning for Mortals is a book by John Bingham. I read about it on the Wish Board, and I ended up buying the book. He has training plans specifically for walking or running or walking/running a half or full marathon. I would be happy to scan and e-mail the training plans, but you might want to read the book too. It is about how anyone can train for this, not just athletes, and he apparently started out in his 40's and was overweight, and now he has completed several marathons. It is a good book with lots of good information about getting ready for a long race. There is information on nutrution, clothing, staying hydrated, shoes and more. He says to spend like a year training to train before ever starting the 14 week training plan, so I think what we are doing now with the walking plan is good for that.

He also says it's about having the courage to start, no so much about finishing or how fast you finish.

Anyway, pm me your e-mail address, and I can at least e-mail you the training plan portion of the book.

Ellen

Thanks for the heads up on the traffic situation. I would really like to stay onsite, but don't know if DH will go for it. We'll see.

Jennifer, thank you so much! This looks really good. I'll print it out and work towards this. DH will love having something to work with as well!

Thanks! I'll PM you my email address. I'm also going to the library this weekend and I'll look for the book. I'd like to read it!

Hi all :wave2: ,
Checking in for the week-did my weigh in today because I had to work the late night clinic again last night (I think that is the last time  ).
I lost 1 lb this week.....I have slowed down & think I am on a kind of plateau so I really need to get excercising. I've only done my Firm stuff twice & I really need to get more regular with the whole excercise portion of my program & maybe that will get me off this slow loss thing I have going on......but a loss is better than a gain, right?
It's 27 lbs total gone. I have a long way to go :sad2: but feel good about the progress I have made this far.
I'm keeping on goin' :cool1: .
Take care yall & I'm jealous of you marathon weekend people. We went this past year & my husband ran & I was going to walk, but didn't get to do the training like I wanted to because of my job change. It was a great weekend. I am proud of all of you for being brave & doing it. Good luck & I will be keeping up with your progress here.

First off, congratulations on the weight loss! That is great.

Secondly, don't downplay your accomplishments, as I know it is very hard to lose weight and/or maintain weight loss, and what you've done is wonderful.

Lastly, I actually think you mean Elin, rather than me (Ellen) although I am very happy with my almost 15# weight loss, Elin has lost over 30.

Congratulations again! and it is great to have this support group isn't it?

Ellen
Actually, I did mean both of you....I knew I was in too big a hurry to leave the office!

Thanks again. The support DOES mean a lot to me.

Congrats on the weight loss! One pound is great! Don't worry about the plateau, we all get them, right? I just came off one that lasted most of March! My surgeon told me to really push water when the plateau's started, and that seems to be helping me. It also really fills me up so I don't want to snack.

OK. I'm trying to see what the cost would be for me to come down & do the 1/2 marathon but I can't find anything on the Disney site. I've done a search on marathon and it comes up empty. Does anyone have a link to the info on the site. I want to know dates and stuff to price it out. Thanks. Vicki

Hi Vicki,

Try this link:

It would be great to have more DDA people join us!

Thanks Ellen. I've saved the link. Airfare looks horrible so I'm not sure I can do it but I'm going to keep checking.

I haven't booked any air yet anyway. I am waiting for Airtran to open up for January.

Plus, for my younger DS, I will need to fly him back to Lansing. I found that an airline called Allegiant air flys direct from Orlando Sanford Airport to Lansing for $99 each way, so I am hoping to buy him a ticket on that airline, but I have never heard of them before. Also, Delta flies to Lansing, but right now their rates are quite high. I hope that once the low cost airlines open up for those dates, that maybe Delta's rates will come down.

I'll be keeping my eye out for good January rates. What airport do you fly out of way up there?

Ellen

I would fly out of Chicago because it is cheaper but my DH doesn't like driving that far so we fly out of Green Bay which is about 2 hours away from us. Flying out of the UP is way too expensive. If I do the 1/2 marathon, I'll be going by myself and I hadn't thought about flying out of Lansing since I'm down there so much for work anyway. I am going to check that out for myself as well.

Let me know when you are there visiting your son and I'll try to get down there for a DDA meet.

Wow you guys are doing so well. It is nice to see that some of you are still planning to run/walk in the 1/2. That is a great goal to work towards. I am happy to report that I am back down to 150 lbs which is 7 lbs less than 3 weeks ago. I still have 7 more lbs to lose before I get back to my previous low, but I'm making progress. :teeth: Thanks for all your support. It really does motivate me.

Congratulations, Deb!!!! I know how discouraged you were for a while! I bet it feels wonderful. I think having warmer weather is really helping all of us. I feel more like exercising when the sun is out. Thanks for starting this thread so we have a place to support each other. It really helps me, too. I couldn't do this without all of you. I get more support from you than from my family, and DH sees how happy I am, and that makes him more supportive, so I thank you all from the bottom of my heart.

Good for you, Deb! I think the change in time and the warmer weather will help us all achieve our goals much faster. Keep it up!!

WTG Deb!

All the talk about the marathon makes me really wish I could do the 1/2 with you guys --I always do better when I have a goal like where exercise is involved, or a special event like a wedding. We had already planned a trip to WDW for mid-December, and I don't want to go back on my word to the kids.....

Why oh why can't I just do it because I'll be healthier and happier? Nope, that special event goal always helps a great deal... Right now, the cruise (and my mouth ulcers) are the biggest motivators....

Have a good day everyone. As my WW instructor used to say, I hope there is less of us all next time we "see" each other....
