DDA Chapter 7

Jennifer, many of the slings/wraps are really just intended for infants, and I think it would be uncomfortable at best, and maybe even unsafe to have a child in them that would be holding herself up so well, so much bigger, etc. Most of them are advertised for up to 16-20 pounds. The soft carriers (like the Baby Bjorn original carriers) are sometimes advertised for up to 2-3 years or 25 pounds (depending on the brand... be sure to look, some only say up to a year and 20lbs still). Even then, I would try and find someone that owns one and try it with Virginia. She might do ok forward facing but depending on her shape it could be uncomfortable for her at the legs.

The backpack carriers (with a rigid frame) are definitely ok for older infants through toddlers, but I don't know how you feel about having her on your back vs front at that age, and what she could see, etc.

I don't think I've helped any :rotfl: but I just wanted to suggest that you really try to give on a "test ride" (either now and/or as your trip gets closer) since she will be pretty big. You are right in that sometimes older children use them with no problem, but my experience with other children has been that they are more of a hassle than a help once a child gets past a certain point.

Good luck! :goodvibes

:scared1: :scared1: :scared1:

I went to Marshalls in the big bad city today. Good thing they have a police man there because the customers were ready to revolt! They had 2 clerks ringing and a HUGE lunch time line.:scared: And the slowest clerks I have ever seen (except maybe for the CM's at the bakery in Norway in Epcot). I got Emma a fishy bucket hat lined in terry that will be perfect for the beach but would love the denim one if you see it anywhere.

Uh oh, the one at Downtown Crossing? That one is crazy sometimes! I can't imagine during lunchhour.

who knows Olivia did not walk till after her 1st birthday. She was almost 13 months. The Carriers and slings I have seen have had bigger kids in them in the pics as well

Yeah, the slings and a lot of the more "organic" style carriers can be used for years. I still carried Terra with hers when she was 3yo. At that age we mainly used it when she'd fall asleep leaving the parks or was napping and I wanted to see a show. It made my hands free for getting on the bus with bag, stroller, etc. Plus, it gave a little extra support for her weight than just my arms and hip. I'd definitely go for one that's better that way. The sling might be one of your best choices. Look into a Mai Tei (sp?) as well. You can put her on your back pretty easily with those and at older ages, that might be nice.

ETA: See if you can google "baby wearing" and your area. There are people who do "seminars" about carriers. It's nothing really formal, but they tend to have lots of types of carriers with them and will help you try them out with Virginia. It would give you a chance to see what was comfortable and what she does well with before you buy.

Speaking of which, I have got to find my hip carrier. Baby Girl is a snuggle baby anyway and it would be very helpful when trying to help Terra and Cinderella with their crafts at library storytime, etc. Plus, she's just way too heavy to carry around in the carseat carrier.

Good morning DDA!!!!

Tammi -Good luck with the Chinese

Elizabeth - Hope DS grade doesn't turn out as poorly as you are expecting. :grouphug:

Beth - Good luck to Laura on Friday. Congrats to Matthew on finishing the big stuff for the year.

Cassidy and Abi - A very very happy belated birthday to you both!!! I'm sorry that I missed you yesterday.

So yesterday got a bit interesting with a couple of testing tantrums from Cinderella(5). In the end I think we worked it all out. I have a solution to the first one in that chore time will now be in the morning since she's done with school. Hopefully getting it done before she's tired from no nap will aid in that situation. Of course, if I could get her to actually nap, that would be even better. I'm also coming armed with a few books of Rachel's so that SportySpice(10) can quit telling me that she can't do her reading because her books are already packed. She's found something in the end both days, but Go Dog Go isn't quite what she needs to be reading regularly. I also made it through the first day of BabyGirl's visitation with Daddy and it went smoothly. Today we're all going to MOPS and then home for the rest of the day.

Have a good Thursday everyone.

morning....

new washer & dryer are coming between 10 & noon today. I am excited as we are all out of clothes now!!

Jonathan came in for a few days and left yesterday....he has moved into an apartment and will begin his internship on Monday. He is also now in a relationship with a girl by the name of Emily. She is quite the looker....I sense that she is way more into him than he is into her. I tried to given him a few motherly speeches...:rotfl:you can imagine how that went over. In 8 days he turns 20!! I have no clue where the time went!! Bill has a tradition that he takes the kids to Vegas when they turn 21....so they have begun planning this trip already....like 2 kids in the candy store :rotfl2:

Happy Thursday!

Not to metion the back pain of having an extra 20lbs or so compressing your spine. That is one reason I never used a carrier. I have back pain from bad posture to begin with.

I hope you like your new appliances!

I don't know why but it seems at that age the guys are so much more casual than the girls. They really are needy! And, looking back, I was that way too! :rolleyes1 I would never act that way now that I did back then! :sad2:

Chanon - Any idea when Southwest will be releasing their dates for December?

Sorry Jennifer. I never used one. I had one but never used it. To me, carrying was always easier.

Jennifer -- you've gotten some good advice. If you are only using it for WDW, I would ask around and see if you can borrow one. I'd hate for you to buy one and then not use it. That would be more money for Disney. Keep in mind that slings and packs get quite warm, and Sept. will still be hot and muggy.

You are very welcome! I figured it would be better to say something nice about you instead of saying something ugly about all the blood-sucking leeches and their laundry lists of demands. :rolleyes1
I am glad your back is getting better!

Yeah, well, DS is failing Social Studies so if I could fix it with chicken fried rice I would be thrilled! But the wording is a bit, something. Presumptuous? Rude?
He has a project due tomorrow. He had to make a "float" (think parade) on top of a shoe box. For some stupid reason he ended up with Greece again, same country he used for that 3D poster thing. I told him he needed to do it on his own. Well, it is due tomorrow and he had a volcano, a giant bonfire, and a tree. :headache: It's not Hawaii!!! :sad2: So I helped him modify it a bit but it looks horrible. He isn't going to get a good grade on it, so I am pretty sure he is toast for the 6 weeks. :sad2: I would have preferred that there was something good on TV.

:rotfl:

Sorry about the project. Maybe the teacher will like it more than you think she will.

So this morning I was humming and doing a little dance to "The Hustle". It was in honor of my countdown being in "The 70's". :rotfl2:
DS scrunched up his face at me and he said "That is NOT a real song." I'll have to look for it on YouTube or something.

EDIT:
Got it!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gFz2WkVAk38

Oh my gosh -- I would have sung and danced with you -- I love 70s music!

I made it through the night :cool1: The Dealership had 32 people show up. Me and a coworker waited on the party. Everything seemed to go well and the money wasn't bad either :cool1: I have to admit that I'm glad it's over with. I don't work again until Saturday night. The boys have games the next 2 nights and both Saturday and Sunday afternoons :rotfl:

I'm glad this week has been more profitable for you. Good luck to the boys on their games!

Good morning everyone!
I have to say...im in single digits :)

Woo hoo! I'm so jealous!

I hope this week continues to go well. It sounds like you are being proactive in setting ground rules and letting them know what to expect. Have fun today at MOPS.

I hope your back is better. I like that tradition -- what a nice guy! Although, will you have to send bail money? ;)

We had storms in the night that woke me up, but no damage that I could see. It was still dark this morning, but I think we made it through without big limbs down. The boys are supposed to both have games tonight, but it will probably be late in the day before a decision is made on if they will play.

Have a great day everyone!

If you have any good thoughts left in you today, would you think about our dog, Button? Kristin and I just dropped her off at the vet to have some surgery done. We don't know how "bad" it is going to be, so good thoughts winging this morning would really be appreciated. Thanks. :)

Nick and Hunter were both pretty small children. Neither hit 20 lbs until well after their 1st birthdays. We had soft carriers for both of them. We had a carrier that could be worn front or back. That one was an Infantino. It even came with an instructional video. I think it worked well up to about 2 years old or so. We also had a hip sling that we used as they got bigger. Since the boys had such foot issues they could not stand in line and we HAD to hold them (we had never heard of a GAC card to let us use a stroller in line). The carriers were life savers for us. Colby was much heavier and hated the carriers. Thankfully we learned about using a stroller in line and that helped immensely. There are great carriers out there, just do some research.

Colby keeps distracting me so now I can't remember what I read :headache: I need to get ready to leave anyway. Nick forgot his Science folder so I need to run to school to drop it off before bringing Colby to school in a completely different direction.

Tia - Glad you are getting settled! Definitely do not let the kids wear you down, because if you give in ONE TIME they will exploit that weakness for the rest of your employment term.
Sister was required (my rule, not her parents') to sit on her bed with books and her Magna Doodle every afternoon. I put classical music on for her and she was not allowed to get off of the bed but she did NOT have to sleep. I was always very clear that she didn't have to sleep. But she ALWAYS fell asleep within 10 minutes. If a 5 year old can't stay awake on a bed for 10 minutes then she needs a nap!

Marci - I played the YouTube video for DS this morning. :rotfl:
I hope you guys don't have any storm damage! :wizard:

DH and I are prepared for the worst with DS's social studies grade. If he somehow manages to pull it up then we will be pleasantly surprised.

:wizard: :wizard: What happened to poor Button?
