Jennifer, many of the slings/wraps are really just intended for infants, and I think it would be uncomfortable at best, and maybe even unsafe to have a child in them that would be holding herself up so well, so much bigger, etc. Most of them are advertised for up to 16-20 pounds. The soft carriers (like the Baby Bjorn original carriers) are sometimes advertised for up to 2-3 years or 25 pounds (depending on the brand... be sure to look, some only say up to a year and 20lbs still). Even then, I would try and find someone that owns one and try it with Virginia. She might do ok forward facing but depending on her shape it could be uncomfortable for her at the legs.
The backpack carriers (with a rigid frame) are definitely ok for older infants through toddlers, but I don't know how you feel about having her on your back vs front at that age, and what she could see, etc.
I don't think I've helped any
but I just wanted to suggest that you really try to give on a "test ride" (either now and/or as your trip gets closer) since she will be pretty big. You are right in that sometimes older children use them with no problem, but my experience with other children has been that they are more of a hassle than a help once a child gets past a certain point.
Good luck!
