DDA Chapter 24

I think cleaning our basement may be the death of me. My allergies are acting up horribly. My throat is scratchy and I have no voice to speak or or with. Hopefully we can get that finished up today and I can move on.

Good morning, DDA! :sunny:

Bernadette - I hope you get everything done you want to before you leave!

Elizabeth - I have never heard of NHD either. And we live in "America's Most Historic City" so you would think we would have! Maybe C's teachers have figured out how to torture you and are inventing projects... ;)

No holiday for me either. And no holiday pay. In fact, I was up until 3:00 this morning working on my paperwork for Junior Festival and composition. I am not going to be a very good teacher by 8:00 tonight. :(

Elin, no it is some big old thing. We got a HUGE packet about all the rules and requirements and so on.

His teacher didn't make it up. She is a bit of an enigma, though. Princeton grad, used to teach a a VERY prestigious all girls school. And now she teaches in a public middle school. Our school isn't THAT bad, so it isn't like she is some idealistic young go-getter hoping to make a difference. Eh, maybe she is. Maybe she is hoping to make a difference without putting her life in peril. DS likes her, and she says she likes him because he tries really hard in her class. That is the one area where DS and I differ - I do not like history. He loved it last year, too.

Oh, my. Princess just said to DS, "I am finished playing with that fairy thing now, so you can play with it." :rotfl2::rotfl2:

Nicholas has decided that he is going to do his science fair project on how/does heat affect the germination of seeds. He will have a control group of seeds, 3 groups that he microwaves for 10, 20 and 30 secs, and then another 3 groups that he will bake for 10, 20 and 30 minutes, and the chart the growth of all the groups.

We don't have a good place to keep plants - they would freeze or the cats would eat them. I hope it goes well!
When I was in 7th grade I grew bean plants with different stuff added to the water. One was plain water, one was water with plant food, one was water with crushed up multi-vitamins, and one was water with crushed up aspirins. Aspirins caused some severe delays, but the plant did eventually grow.

I am working today. Momboss and Dadboss both have to work today - neither one of their offices is closed. And no holiday pay, but that's OK. We went to breakfast with a couple other nannies, went to Target, now we're home. Pixie is asleep and Princess is showing DS all of her birthday loot.

He's not exactly planting them. We will put them inside zippy bags with a moist paper towell and tape them to a sunny window, essentially making a 'greenhouse.'

Guess what we have been doing all day?

Science Fair projects!!!!

I made homemade pasties today. That is Past-ees not Paste-ees. :lmao: I haven't made them in years. Katrina helped me. It is the first time that I've made them without Chuck. I'm a little nervous about them turning out. Another 15 minutes and they'll be out of the oven. I was able to make a dozen and we'll freeze 10 of them. I sure hope they turn out right. I added a few ingredients to our original recipe.

Could you PM me the recipe you use? Katie fell in love with these in England, and I haven't been able to recreate them for her. I'd love a tried and true recipe.

Thanks!

Hal made those a few weeks ago. They were wonderful, very filling but really good.

They turned out pretty good. I will need to make changes for my 2nd batch.

Pasties

Crust
6 cups flour
2 cup shortening
3 t. salt
1 cup & 2-8 T cold water

Filling
1-1/2 # beef
1-1/2 # pork
5 med. potatoes
3 med. onions
4 carrots
small rutabaga
salt & pepper to taste

Mix crust, add water until rolling consistency. Dice filling ingredients & mix together. Roll crust to 8" circles. Place filling on one side of the circle. Fold over and seal around edges. Bake at 375 degrees for 1 hour or until meat is tender.

You can eat immediately, or freeze in aluminum foil. You can reheat in the microwave for 6-10 minutes on high when they are frozen.

It makes 12 pasties.

This recipe came from our school head cook when I was growing up. We made them for school fund raisers. Her recipe didn't call for the carrots or rutabaga.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! I've tried some, but the crust never worked, so I'm glad to have a recipe that has worked for you!

We finished our basement tonight :cool1: I still need to wash a few clothing items that will be brought upstairs and sort through a bunch of hats and mittens, but overall it looks awesome. I can walk around without tripping or climbing. We brought one full truckload to the Salvation Army and Chris has a load of trash/recycling, otherwise it was all stuff we use, it just needed to be neatly put away. That's 2 big projects done this year :cool1: I told Chris that I plan to have this house finished from top to bottom, inside and out before Nick's 8th Grade Graduation on June 21st. I need a deadline or I will procrastinate.

I was much more excited by pasties then past-ees. I was going to ask for the pattern :lmao:

Okay I am really starting to hate fall and winter and the germs that go with it.

Olivia has strep throat again.
