DDA Chapter 24

I CAN'T BELIEVE THAT SCHOOL IS CLOSED AGAIN! Will they ever go back? Ok, so yesterday we got some flurries, that changed to rain. NO accumulation. What's wrong with a 2 hour delay??? This is really becoming a disservice to my children. 12 days of missed school this year, so far.

Tammi, we are in the same boat here. And it stinks. School closed 2 hours early Feb 5th and have yet to reopen. Tomorrow, for sure, they say. I'll believe it when I see it.

Work has been interesting, to say the least. Not all of the kids have been there, yet. Maybe today, but maybe not with schools being closed. I have not had to worry about shuffling the girls here and there because Eric has been off. Yesterday my mom came over to watch the girls. Thursday should be an interesting experiment, lol! Eric is off tomorrow to chaperon a field trip with Mo's class. Although I can't imagine there will be a field trip.

Tammi, are your temps just incredibly cold? Our schools say they may close if the city tells them they are pulling too much power in really cold temps. I will say the school doesn't seem to be bothering to heat the auditorium, so maybe that is how they conserve energy! I was up there last night helping with some stuff and my fingers were stiff from the cold!
High today of 36. While that is below our average, it's not that cold. I talked to a guy this morning that lives out in the remote part of our county, and asked him how his roads were. He said they are still ice/snowy in areas, which is the problem. The schools are concerned about buses getting into those areas. While I appreciate the difficulty of that, I think at this point the schools need to put some of the burden on the parents, either to arrange transpo to school or get kids to another bus stop. There is no doubt in my mind that all these high school kids that drive are not staying home safe and sounds. They are driving to the movies, mall, friend's houses, etc. And they closed schools last night, before this surprise snowfall even occured. There are so many gripes I have about how our schools district is handling this. One major problem is our superintendant is on his way out, so he doesn't care. It would be nice if the teachers were in touch with students and giving them work to do via internet or websites. I'm ready to go across the street to a neighbor that home schools and get her lesson plans!

Tammi, you are right - it isn't THAT cold. I am pretty sure that is NOT how our district would handle things. And I would be furious.
They are going to have a really difficult time requiring everybody to make up those days. We are leaving the day after school gets out, and if they extended our year, well, tough cookies. DS wouldn't be there! They only build 2 inclement weather days into our calendar, and we have used one. But typically by the time February is over we don't get any weather significant enough to close schools.

The other thing that is going on, I think, is that the school system is waiting on approval from the Governor, because if a state of emergency has been declared, the missed school days can be waived. So depending on what comes of that, we may have fewer days to make up, but that doesn't do anything to improve the missed learning.

I really don't care about the adding on to the end of the year, because that is basically free daycare. After SOLs at the end of May, they spend their days watching movies, field day, parties, etc. I'm concerned about how lack of classroom time is going to impact my kids for SOLs, and put them behind going into the next school year.

Eh, I don't know that 12 days of instruction out of 180 (or however many make up the whole year) will matter. I know for TAKS they teach the kids test taking skills - they don't learn any real information. They learn how to be good at multiple choice.

AND the tests aren't hard. Except maybe the 8th grade science one, which will give your school an "Unacceptable" academic rating but the idiot kids who FAIL the test still go skipping off to high school without penalty. And the kids who are in 8th grade the NEXT year get all sorts of asinine, time wasting PROJECTS!:mad::mad:

What have I gotten myself in for?

The grandson that microwaved Lightning McQueen. The one who put his little race cars on the stairs, so I could break my neck. The one who put marshmallows on the fireplace screen. The one who turned my waterbed into an indoor pool. That one has now painted his face with nail polish.

And I signed us up for a week of one-on-one time. :scared1::scared1::scared1:

What the heck was I thinking???:upsidedow:upsidedow:upsidedow

He will be fine. You will be busy. He will always be closely supervised, more so then at home. And he'll be extremely happy. Kids that have idol time are the ones that are mischievous.

I'm sorry you all are still dealing with snow. We were supposed to get a "big" storm today into tomorrow. So far nada. It is snowing south and west of us, but our few flurries have already melted :confused3 We were hoping for accumulation as the kids of off this week and other then spots of ice there isn't anything to do outside. Thank goodness for Rock Band. They are fully absorbed into recording their album :lmao:

This morning all 3 of them have dentist appointments so we'll be heading out in a few minutes.

Be safe, Elin. Bob is stuck in that mess at the Stafford/KG line.

Today's snow day has proven to be a good thing, I guess. Alyssa threw up all over her bed at 2 a.m. and wasn't able to keep anything down until about an hour ago. I'm praying this is a quick bug and miraculously the rest of us avoid it, however, if we're going to be sick, better now than when Sammy arrives!

Keeping you all in my thoughts as we deal with the weather, sickness, recovery, etc. :grouphug:

I'm at work and really really bored. only 2 patients on our A/P unit today. We have to have 2 Nurses here so we each have 1 patient.

Amy sorry to hear Alyssia is sick, hope she is feeling better soon. :wizard:

We are finally get a bit of snow :cool1: I think we might have 1 1/2"
I went out to pick up some groceries, odds and ends. Much to my surprise the plazas were desserted. We haven't had snow in so long I guess people have forgotten how to drive in it :lmao: It was quite beautiful and I got a lot done in no time with no lines anywhere.

Amy - I hope Alyssa is feeling better, and that no one else gets it.

Jennifer - thinking of you and the girls!

Janet - hope the dentist was uneventful.

:scared1::eek:

How old is he? Is he in school? Want to know how I get my kids to behave at WDW durning the school year? I threaten to go back to the room to do homework. And here's the best part-you only have to do it once and that kid won't misbehave again AND they tell their siblings so they behave too.:rotfl2:
He's six and bored. I like your idea.

I threaten to hire an in-room sitter. And it is NOT an empty threat. If I say I will hire a sitter, I am NOT playing.
I like this idea too!

Tell him he is not going and you are gonna take someone else!!!! :lmao::lmao::lmao: just kidding!!!!
He would be so crushed he'd never forgive me. But I love your mind.... I know you were kidding. :rotfl2::rotfl2:

So we are getting more snow. On top of the close to 4 feet we recently had. Most kids here have been out of school for almost a whole week already. Is winter over yet. I am still trying to get down to FL in early March. I wish I could buy a one way ticket and move down there.

Bernadette- Hope you can recover what was on your hard drive. As long as it is not fried you should be able to remove it and attach it to another computer or use it as an external hard drive with a box.

Steffy- Threaten him that they'll shrink him down and teach him the It's a Small World dance and make him a part of the show if he doesn't behave.;) Hope you get the bed issue straightened out.

I am totally enjoying the Olympics. It is getting me excited for my potential trip in 2011 that has me in Vancouver.

For those of you not on Facebook Jennifer (Tink2020) and the the twins are all sick.

I hope you are all well.

Stay safe and warm.
I love this too. I could shrink him and leave him in the Boneyard....:cool1:

He will be fine. You will be busy. He will always be closely supervised, more so then at home. And he'll be extremely happy. Kids that have idol time are the ones that are mischievous.
You are so wise Deb. That is his problem exactly. He's bored. And alone a lot of the time. He has really enjoyed helping me plan the trip. I bought him the Birbaum guide for kids and the Guide to the Magic. Two more weeks!!!:cool1::cool1::cool1:

Good Morning!

Although the party isn't until Sunday our baby girl is one today :lovestruc

Steffy - I'm sure you're going to have a wonderufl trip with your DGS, we took Brandon alone for the first time when he was 5, we all had a blast and he wasn't any trouble, just a little hard to get up in the mornings. We catered the whole trip to him which meant several character meals and arcade time that we normally wouldn't do. Another thing that worked really well was Disney dollars, we gave him his spending money in Disney dollars, let him spend it any way he wanted but made it clear that when he was out of Disney dollars he was done shopping. We would go back to the resort earlier than normal most evenings and he would play with his new purchases.

Amy - Sorry to hear the sickies have invaded your house too
