The more I think about this swine flu, the more confused I get. Ok, so it originates from pigs. Usually it is a pig to pig virus, but then people catch it. It transmits from person to person. People get sick. The symptoms are the same as influenza. Every winter we have hundreds of kids out sick from CONTAGIOUS influenza. Life, school, etc. go on as normal, with several kids missing. ONE PERSON, out of millions, gets the swine flu and the world comes to a screeching halt! What am I missing?????

Jen and I just had this same conversation yesterday. It's been raining all week here in Cincinnati, and Kevin is gone all day on Thursdays, so I was wavering with what to do with my kids to get us out of the house. Germs are everywhere, every day. One time my friend's daughter threw up in one of those Kroger car grocery carts. She cleaned it up the best she could and turned it in to customer service, but think about how often people don't do those things. It's gross really, but that's life. The media is out-of-control!

By the way, we ended up at Chuck E. Cheese yesterday. My kids love that place, they were very well-behaved, and Alyssa and Matty slept in today until 8:30 a.m. :thumbsup2

Good Morning, DDA!!!!

I only have 2 kids today! And one of those plus Mo will leave right before noon for school! Maybe just maybe I'll get my cake website up today.

I didn't know you were planning to do that! How very awesome.

As I understand it: It is a mutant strain that is a combination of a pig virus and a bird virus. It is changing as it infects humans and they are not certain just how it will continue to mutate. It is highly contagious so therefore they are thinking that illness and fatalities will be higher just simply because of the number of people who will contract it. It has flu-like symptoms (fever, body aches, etc) but also carries vomiting and diarrhea which poses the secondary problem of dehydration. I think as long as people are healthy (right now, at least) there is little harm from the virus as it is in its present state. If the immune systems are already compromised or endangered by things such as age (both oldsters as well as wee ones) or preexisting conditions there is a higher risk of severity.

So says this layman, anyway. ;):confused3

Good morning DDA!

More rain projected here in Cincinnati for the next several days. Luckily, it won't damper our plans too much, since we have Family Fun Night at our church tonight and Kevin and I are going to see Avenue Q tomorrow afternoon.

Sending prayers out for Marci's continued recovery, Chuck's mom and Kristine's mom, and everyone in need of a LIFT! :grouphug:

Anne-Marie, it looks like Sophie had a fun party!

No pin codes at my house. We have yet to ever receive one. Many people have recently contacted me about advice for their summer trips. The most entertaining question was, "Does Disney offer daycare for 9-month-old babies?" ;)

Hope everyone has a great weekend! :)

Amy - I look forward to your review of Avenue Q. The girls and I saw it on Broadway a couple of years ago.

Enjoy your weekend!

That is what my ped. told me with Alyssa this winter. It's not so much the flu that is dangerous, it's the secondary infections that are contracted because of the weakened immune systems. That's why they immediately are giving people Tamiflu, swine flu or otherwise.

We're back from Pinewood Derby. Jacob didn't win, but he had a great time! He's such a good sport, it makes me so proud of him!

I had a small panic attack this morning due to the swine flu. I think we're all entitled to feel nervous about this thing. I went through our emergency supplies, and we are looking in good shape. When I went shopping today, I stocked up on Immodium, toilet paper, Gatorade and Pedialyte. I also picked up the new anti-viral tissues that Kleenex makes.

We are all set for emergency food and water. We have enough in the house to last us a good 9-10 months if we're careful.

I think that going through all of that, and really seeing that I'm doing all that I can to make the situation as "normal" as possible for my family made me feel much better.

Alan spoke to our doctor, and will be going to get a pneumonia shot tomorrow. With his weak lungs, I've been worried about what a bout with the flu would do to him. He's going to speak to the doctor about Leslie, since she has inherited his weak lungs. After all of that, we've got to just use common sense and try not to get too overwhelmed.
Good night, my friends! I hope you all sleep well!

I agree with you Glynis! Hang it there! Knowing you have family members who are more susceptible to illness is obviously scary.

Obviously, I did not let Noah play any games at Chuck E. Cheese. He was happy to sit in the stroller with his Cheerios. :)

Thanks Elin! I'm looking forward to it, especially after that wholesome Billy Joel/Elton John concert we went to a couple months ago. :rotfl:

Some of what I have read, indicates that it is more deadly to the healthy young adult population than other types of flu. There is a theory that may provoke a cytokine storm which is (in very simplified terms) an overreaction of the immune system. I've also read two divergent theories: one that it will weaken outside of it's epicenter and the other that it is starting weaker but will be come stronger as it adapts to humans.

I honestly don't know what is correct. For the time being, I'm stressing handwashing and other good hygiene but not panicking.

I have to bake for our synchronized swimming bake sale tomorrow. Anyone have any good suggestions? I was thinking cute cupcakes might sell well or maybe something not sweet. I can't seem to get motivated here.

I think because of the "high" number of fatalities in Mexico they just didn't know what would happen once it started to spread. But really, keeping it in perspective, there are MILLIONS of people in Mexico, many in less-than-sanitary conditions, and they have a couple hundred deaths. Not thousands, not tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands. Just hundreds.

With any virus, it could mutate into something really scary. But so far it isn't that scary. Which is why I am not scared.

I'm always a day late and a dollar short. :sad2:

Thanks!! :goodvibes I need to do something to cut back on the daycare but I can't just stop. So while I am not "advertising" the website is just a way to display what I've done. I hope to bring in some extra $ by word of mouth. I am going to take some more cake classes over the summer in hopes of working in a local cake shop come fall.

I need to get my stuff packed for this weekend. Which I am of course dragging my feet about. Then I need to head to work and then camp.

Sending hugs and good thoughts to all of you.

Kristine-Hope your Mom is doing better!:wizard:

Vicki-Hope your MIL is doing better!:wizard:

Belated birthday wishes for Alyssa! The Pucci Pet looks really cute!

Happy Birthday Jennifer!

Robyn-:wizard:Good luck with your website!

I agree with you. I thought it was under 200 deaths in Mexico. How many die every week from other illnesses there?

I will be careful in WDW but I was careful in January too when there was a virus going around then. Joe has a cold. I told him he had to be sure he covered his mouth very well because lots of folks will be nervous.
