Good morning, DDA!!

Vicki - Welcome back. Loving all of your pictures! Congratulations on the races. Sounds like you did wonderfully.

I know that I read other things that I wanted to comment on, but I can't seem to think around this headache. Lots of :wizard: all around though! I think I'm going to find a place away from this bright sun and see what else I can do to get this headache gone. Have a good day everyone!

Anyone with Bar/Bat Mitzvah knowledge, can you please help?

Rachel and some friends have been invited to a friend's Bat Mitzvah this weekend. It is the first time for any of them and there are a lot of questions as to gift, timing, etc. The service is in the morning and there is a breakfast or brunch afterwards. Then there's a party in the evening at the City Museum downtown that starts around 5.

How long does the ceremony itself usually take? Is there anything the girls need to know going in about traditions, sitting/standing, etc? What about the gift? Most of these girls have only been friends with the girl for a year or two. Are there certain guidelines to the gift and if it's monetary, then how much?

The one thing we do know is about the clothing - no sleeveless, no glittery stuff. Other than that, we're all novices. I'd appreciate any advice possible. Thanks!!

ETA: Also, when is the appropriate time to give the gift? Presentation?

Marci ... and anyone else who loves good wines!!!!

Look what our local wine bar (http://kybeccawinebar.com/) is offering beginning tonight!! :rolleyes1

I'm throwing a game night/dinner in May...I'm trying to come up with a main "meal" to cook but not pasta. I have appitizers planned (mini ruebens bites, s&s meatballs, marinated antipasto and veggie platter). Does anyone have any suggestions - or should I just tack on some more appitizers??

sounds like a few more appetizers would be good.

Buffalo chicken dip with cracker and celery! Yum!!! Maybe a selection of wings (I've got some recipes for hot as well as teriyaki wings if you want them). Are you going to do some sweet stuff as well? Cookies, brownies, lemon bars, etc., are always good.

I'm hesitant with wings because we'll be playing cards, board games, cornhole, Guitar Hero...but I like the buffalo chicken dip idea! I think I have a slow cooker recipe for that one... (Is your website still up by the way?)

Dessert is an ice cream cake. It seems the only excuse we adults have for an ice cream cake nowadays. :teeth:

Tia,

The bat mitzvah is incorporated into an ordinary sabbath service, and many of the people present at the service may not be involved in the bat mitzvah. The last one we attended was almost 2 hours long. Gifts are given at the party not the service.

Monetary gifts are fine usually in multiples of $18, a number that is considered to be favorable in Jewish tradition. We just gave a check in a bat mitzvah card.

...does anyone have a recipe for...it's like a cold veggie pizza...it's a basic cracker/pillsbury type crust, topped with ranch dressing and cream cheese/sour cream and cut up veggies??

Boy I hope that makes sense.

Andrew is going to his second Bat Mitzvah this Saturday -- the whole sixth grade is invited (but that's only 75 or so since it's a small school), but they are only invited to the party -- 9 p.m. - 12:30 a.m. :scared1: And we live an hour from this place. Thankfully, they aren't invited to the service, as I think that is usually pretty long. So, the only thing I think I can help with is that I think the present would go to the party at night. They had a table for them at the last party. I gave a make-up bag the last time. This time, I really have no money for a gift, but remembered that my Mom bought a bunch of cute jewelry rolls (travel cases) years ago so I'll give this girl one of those. Andrew doesn't know her very well anyway, so that will be good enough.

This party has a movie premiere theme with "Hollywood Attire." I finally broke down and e-mailed the Mom to see if khaki's and a button down would work. She said that's what most boys will be wearing.

I hope Rachel has fun!

I think it is. If not, let me know and I can help you with whatever recipes you want. I'm trying to work up my courage to start a blog, and eventually, I'll put all my tried and true recipes there.

Oooh...my mom used to make that. She isn't at home right now, but I'll see if she can remember the recipe if no one else has it. I remember that it she used Pillsbury crescent rolls to make the crust.

ETA: Is this it? http://www.pillsbury.com/Recipes/ShowRecipe.aspx?rid=9897 It looks the one my mother made, though she varied the veggies somewhat.

Hello, all! Miles was back at school today, though he is still coughing a bit. Hmmm...that could last a while if it's the same as my cough. I still have it three weeks later.

Glynis, I think you asked about transfers the other day. I've always used the dark transfers from Avery and had good luck with them. I have seen that Amy (M_I_C_K_E_Y) here on the DISign board is selling dark transfers through her website. They sound great, but I haven't actually tried them. She has a thread called Amy's (Non-Disney) Designs (or something similar to that).

Thanks Beth! That's the one I was looking for! I just copied one off of allrecipes.com but it had more spices.

Glynis - I don't have your recipe site saved...can you or someone post it again for me? Thanks!

Guess what?!
