DDA Chapter 19

Good morning Ann Marie, how is Katie, still surly?
Good this morning. When she realized yesterday that she doesn't have "screens" for a month she got alittle more introspective. We have a Lenten retreat on Saturday so I am going to ask about talking to someone at church.

How nice! Do you have the kids this weekend too?
Um, no. And because our relationship is bitter at best, he won't let them stay home.  Which makes me even more irate with him, that he only thinks of himself, and not what makes the kids happy. They are so mad at him as well. They are really seeing his true colors.

This may be old news to you but I just got around to reading all my inbox...

(I have to be cryptic here because the DIS will *** it all out otherwise)

The privately maintained Polynesian site that Steve has done for the past 10 years is shutting down.
I know I will miss seeing the TIKI shots from that MAN.
Very cryptic, Elin. ;) :thumbsup2

Jennifer sending lots of :wizard: your way!

Tammi sorry to hear the kids will not be home this weekend

Robyn - enjoy the concert!!!

Jennifer - as much as it pains you, it might be time to take Avery to the hospital. Don't keep her from treatment just because you don't want to be away from the other. I know it's hard, and I'm sending tons of prayers and :wizard: to you all!!!!

That's a shame, there is so much helpful info on his site.

:dance3: for the concert, have a wonderful time!

How scary about Lucy drinking the nail polish, glad she is ok :scared1:

Sorry about the dishwasher, glad to hear Eric got the new one installed quickly!

Hope all the sickies leave soon :wizard:
Glad Lucy is o.k. Enjoy the concert.

I have another whopping stye smack on top of the one that wasn't completely healed from the first "crop". I feel like I have been shot in the eye with a poison dart.

I agree on this 100%. The lack of fluids would scare me too much at this point.

I have to ask, what is wrong with giving children cough syrup? Heck I remember the doctor always prescribing cough syrup for my sister and I when we were kids.

This is new within the last couple of years.

Deb I like your new avatar :thumbsup2

Thanks

Heidi, it's not that "no kids" can have cough medicine. That's why I was curious about Deb's pediatrician's thought. The recommendation has always been that kids under 2 not have it, especially over the counter. There just haven't been any studies in kids, and the risks from the various ingredients outweigh the efficacy, which is questionable anyway. In the last two or so years, there have been recommendations (following lots of deaths) suggesting, depending on the study and the source, not giving kids under the age of 4 or 6 OTC medicines, and for doctors to prescribe the good stuff "as infrequently as possible". Given how our country loves frivolous lawsuits, especially against medical professionals, this has turned into "almost never".

The bottom line is that there haven't been controlled studies in children, AND there have been deaths linked to it, in large numbers. Many times this is idiocy of parents (dosing wrong, etc) but absolutely not always. It's just one of those situations where they'd prefer not to risk death over something that isn't medically "necessary" anyway.

That being said, when the girls hit about 4, barring any new evidence, they'll get cough syrup if they're coughing so hard they're purple and I'm not sleeping. Especially if it lasts 7 weeks again. ;)

Maybe it's a New England thing, but they aren't giving out prescriptions to anyone. SIL went yesterday hoping for codeine cough syrup for herself and they wouldn't give her a prescription either. Antibiotics are the same way. You have to been seen and just about on your death bed before they will give a prescription out. I read you guys calling your doctors and getting a prescription and I'm baffled. :confused3

TMI alert! ;)

Some of you know from facebook already, but we could still use some prayers this way, too :( On top of the coughing spells - which now both girls have in earnest - that have me concerned because it looks just like Elise's illness that led to pneumonia and are requiring daily breathing treatments, they both have the GI thing going around, too. At first it was not at all worrisome. Kids get gastro - diarrhea, vomiting. I know it's not the last I'll see it this badly! :)

Now, however, Avery isn't drinking either. She has, with no exaggeration, about 10 diarrhea diapers each day, many with "water loss stool" which is even worse. She empties her stomach 1-2 times each day (we're talking more vomit than I usually produce). All this, while taking in about 7-10 ounces of liquid for the last 3 days. We've done every liquid allowed (water, juice, pedialyte, formula, whole milk, mixtures of things) in every form we can think of (sippy cups, regular cups, syringes, bottles of course), and the best day we've had in a while is 11 ounces. She should probably be having 40 or more with all of her symptoms, more now that she's coughing, too.

We're going to try popsicles today (lucky 9-month old! ;)) and see what she'll do with them, but she hates cold stuff so I'm not sure it will go over well.

She has been acting "well" for the most part, but is now starting to get lethargic which concerns me. My usual standard measure for dehydration (wet diapers) is almost impossible to keep track of because of the water loss stool (that looks the same, but is most certainly differentiated by smell! :scared: ).

I feel so helpless, and am starting to get very concerned that she'll need replacement fluids. I don't want that for obvious reasons, but mostly because - as I felt when we were trying to keep Elise home from the hospital - I don't want to be away from whichever one is home!

This is getting old. We haven't been "well" since January, but I expect that from winter. It's the last 2 bouts (pneumonia and now this) that have our doctor calling US every day to make sure the girls don't need admitted that have me more stressed out

The lot of DDA kiddos needs a long break.

It sounds like the roto virus that my older 2 had when they were little. Hunter was admitted first for IV fluids and by the next morning Nick was in the bed next to him. The IV fluids helped a ton though. It sounds like you may need to go that route for your girls.

I do know this and it's at the forefront of my mind, but I want to thank you for being bold enough to say it. I'm waiting on a call from Kyle. As soon as she gets up from a (hopefully) good nap, we'll re-evaluate. She just had a nice, giant projectile bunch of mess all over my couch, and seemed to be energetic for about 0.4 seconds. It's naptime though, and also the day after a rough night's sleep, so it's hard to tell if her energy didn't last because she was truly tired, or if it didn't last because she's sick. I hope that made sense. Basically, I'm hoping she was acting wonky this morning because she needed to puke, and nothing more. We'll see when she gets up, I guess.

Thankfully, we can at least take one step before hospitalization. If I'm still concerned when she's up, the doctor has arranged a standing order at the local Children's hospital satellite (about 5 minutes from my house) to get bloodwork to see how her kidneys are keeping up. That way, we can avoid hospitalization if it's unnecessary, or be directly admitted (no going through the ER) if it is.

Thank you all for your prayers!

That is TOO weird! I haven't heard any issues with cough syrup for adults! I would be so furious! :rotfl:

As for the antibiotics, there is no "you guys" that includes me! :snooty: ;) As a micro major and nerd who reads medical journals for pleasure and wife of a doctor, I could go on for HOURS about the over-prescription of antibiotics. I'm not being dramatic when I say that we are killing ourselves and making it VERY hard for our children to live very long lives by handing out antibiotics like some doctors do. Thankfully, most are getting away from it, but certainly not all. It infuriates me when people get antibiotics for "pink" ears, "pink" throats, illness that is PROVEN to be viral 80-99% of the time and has not had a chance to run its course, etc.

Either way, it all sucks. We ALL need to get well, even if just for a little while! :headache: :grouphug:

Tammi, I'm sorry about this weekend but I meant to tell you how HAPPY I am for your other news regarding the house and DVC! And nearly debt-free, that is just wonderful.

Deb, did your boys have the rotavirus "vaccine" (drink)? I think it's fairly new, but I don't recall when. Maybe just the last few years...? I'm curious as to the efficacy. It does look EXACTLY like rota, but I thought the vaccine was a good one. You've made me curious..... :)

ETA: Hmm.... apparently the efficacy isn't great, or at least not how I thought. It has reduced hospitalizations and death by 96-98%, which is I'm sure the goal :) , but the occurrence only decreased by 70-something%.... Not that it matters, they'll just test her for it. But thanks for the opportunity to do some research. I enjoy putting my brain to use these days! :rotfl:

Jennifer,

Loads of :wizard: for the girls and you. I know it's not easy and exhausting. You all certainly deserve a break. Just hang in there.'s

Jennifer, I hope the girls are feeling better soon!

Ouch! I hope it heals quickly :wizard:

Thanks. :)

Good this morning. When she realized yesterday that she doesn't have "screens" for a month she got alittle more introspective. We have a Lenten retreat on Saturday so I am going to ask about talking to someone at church.

Just remember that while she is behaving more respectfully, that means she is now internalizing her feelings to avoid being punished. The feelings are still there. Hugs to both of you!

Your XH is a jerk. Just thought I would clarify that. ;) The kids will figure out that he doesn't have their best interests in mind. I'm sorry it becomes a "possession" thing as opposed to being considerate and allowing the kids to see their grandma. :sad2:

That vaccine cycles on and off the market, so I don't know anything about the current one. There are a couple of things I am thinking: One, is it a multi-dose thing and they have only had one dose? Two, with their immunity suppressed from being sick with other things for so long maybe they caught it anyway? Three, if they were just recently vaccinated maybe the antibodies aren't at high enough levels to make a difference yet?

Is it "just" nannying that made you so informed?! (I didn't know how to put that, so the quotes were an attempt to make SURE you know I don't think nannying is some small task! I just mean that you are always so up to date on healthcare stuff, I didn't know if I missed a previous career, etc or if just stemmed from being on your eighth kid (I smiled when I read that somewhere recently!) Anyway, it was supposed to be a compliment! :teeth:).

The current incarnation is a 3-dose vaccine, finishing up at 6 months. So, they've had plenty of "the juice" :) and plenty of time for it to work, if it were going to. That being said, see my previous post edit, they could totally still have it

I know you guys are on top of it all. Heck she's got 2 medical professionals to care for her. I hope I didn't offend. :flower3:

I wanted to be a doctor. But since I have NO math or chemistry ability, there is no med school in my future.
I do try to stay current on things, and since I typically have an infant/toddler/preschooler (or two, or three) I see how things change and evolve. :)

There was not a vaccine available for the boys. I don't even think Colby had the vaccine :confused3 Thankfully once you have the virus you are immune so the older 2 should never get it again. Of course I suppose that strains can change which would mean that they could catch a different strain just like the flu:confused3

NOT AT ALL. I personally find it extremely hard to "call someone out" or offer even sound advice, even though I know sometimes it's hard to see the big picture when you're in the middle of something. I will be the first to admit that we worry less than most, and perhaps sometimes less than we should. We always joke that medical professionals make one of two kinds of patients -- psychotic like my MIL, or "great" ;) like us, meaning extremely laid back. While I wouldn't switch sides if you made me, I sure as heck feel guilty sometimes about letting things go even when it's the right thing to do. It's nice to hear in an encouraging way, instead of my own guilty conscience, that maybe it's ok to let someone else help. :goodvibes

Well I find it extremely refreshing! :goodvibes: You use more critical thinking I would say than some doctors I worked with... which is just as important (if not moreso) than math and science! :rotfl: And CERTAINLY more than most of the parents I worked with! ;)

I just got a call from her doctor and filled him in. We decided to try one more time to get some fluid in Avery (mostly for my own benefit, I'm sure ) and then he'll probably call and set up an infusion. Thankfully we do have the satellite nearby and can just run up there and be there for a few hours for a bolus, instead of having to be admitted to the hospital. He's optimistic, as are Kyle and I, that getting fluids in her will "perk her up" enough for her to heal and start eating on her own again, hopefully long enough to get over this bug.
