DDA Chapter 14

My dad's entire unit was hit, he and one other guy were the only ones to survive. He was saved by a foot locker. I am grateful otherwise I wouldn't be here.

One of the little boys my mom used to babysit for when I was little committed suicide after his return home from Afghanistan. He was about to be deployed back over there and didn't want to go. He was 18. :sad1:

It saddens me that there is very little help for them once they come back home.

Those are both very sad stories, Robyn. War is just plain nasty.

I forgot how tedious it is to speak to CRO....I am used to member services at DVC...

for us to go in June at the Poly for nine nights, it prices out at $5700. So I still can't make that work in my mind

 I don't think I could make that work in my mind either, Kristine! :sad2:

Glynis - I hope Mary is feeling better very soon and that no one else in the family shares those germs!

Well, unfortunately, it is strep throat. Luckily, we caught it pretty early, so hopefully, the antibiotics will kick in and no one else will catch it. Knock on wood!

We've got the first dose of medicine in her, and she's resting comfortably on the couch while I disinfect the house.

I am afraid, however, that Leslie will come down with it, too. They've been sharing a bed lately, due to nightmare issues. Still, hopefully, it won't be too bad.

I'll keep Mary home from school tomorrow, and send her back once she's been on the medicine for over 24 hours.

I'm glad you caught it early :wizard: That no one else catches it.

Hi!!! We are home!!! 12 hour drive & I am ready tp drop!

We found a few homes that fit our bill so to speak. We have another open house this weekend too.

Hope everyone is well!

All this veteran talk.....

My dad was a Marine, or should I say IS a Marine. You know....once a Marine, always a Marine. Anyway, he got hooked up in what my mom and I refer to as the Geriatric Brigade, a group of retired Marines that do functions. He's in parades, was at Toys R Us the other day for several hours for their Toys for Tots thing, among others. Here he is in the Veteran's Day Parade today. He's the one in the center with the dark glasses

And just to go down memory lane, here's my high school band from the parade today, along with the dance and drill team, which is what I did way back when.

What great photos. It's nice that your Dad still feels apart of such a great group.

My Dad served in the Army and was discharged just before Vetnam started. He was on a plane heading into the states from Germany when Elvis was at the same airport heading overseas. He was serving during a non conflict time and doesn't ever talk about it other than maybe cities he saw. He is in no way involved with the military now. My Mom's Dad was in WWII and his job was picking up the Dead bodies on the front line :scared: He died when he was 54 from many different health issues.

NEVER FORGET OUR VETERANS

My uncle (the one who raised me as his daughter) was a waistgunner on a
B-24 Liberator. At 16, he walked out of a movie theater to hear of the bombing at Pearl Harbor. He signed up that day. He flew missions over Ploesti, Fogi Italy, North Africa & Normandy. He earned a Purple Heart amoung others. He was wounded several times & expected to die in North Africa of menangitis. He had a hard time talking about the war. He was part of that steadfast generation that did for others & in the name of his country. I miss him every single day,:sad1: and I make sure my kids know what he did for them.

What a lucky girl you were to have him in your life, Anne Marie. And he was lucky to have you too. :goodvibes

With all the presidental election coverage behind us, I thought I would update you all that Kevin will not be our new mayor for a few years, yet. Someday. :thumbsup2

Your town is full of crazy people!

Tammi - your pictures reminded me of our Veteran's Day celebrations in PA too. We had our biggest HS football rivalry game on Veteran's Day with parades and no school. It was a wonderful way to honor those who cared enough to serve.

Uncle charged in crash death

Man allegedly got drunk as boy played at Chuck E. Cheese

By Matthew Walberg |Tribune reporter November 11, 2008 Seconds after he drove his SUV into a Far Northwest Side house, Richard Gorney sat dazed behind the wheel as an off-duty Chicago police sergeant tried to resuscitate Gorney's great-nephew.

Sgt. Charles Daly, who lives nearby, heard a crash shortly after 5 p.m. Saturday and ran outside to find Troy Evers, 8, of Roselle lying unresponsive on the ground. His body had been thrown from the vehicle on impact.

"I started doing CPR. I knew he was in bad shape. I tried to save him, but no luck," Daly said of Troy, who was pronounced dead a short time later in St. Francis Hospital in Evanston.

On Monday, Gorney, 71, a former part-time Cook County sheriff's deputy, was ordered held in lieu of $50,000 bail on charges of aggravated driving under the influence and reckless homicide.

At a bond hearing, prosecutors said Gorney drank vodka for about two hours in his vehicle as his 12-year-old son and Troy played inside a Chuck E. Cheese restaurant in Skokie.

On his way home, Gorney was speeding when he lost control of his SUV and crashed into a home in the 4500 block of West Bryn Mawr Avenue, authorities said. The crash occurred near Gorney's residence in the 5600 block of North Kenneth Avenue.

Authorities said a subsequent blood test showed that Gorney's blood-alcohol content was .175—more than two times the legal limit of .08 in Illinois.

Daly, the off-duty police sergeant, said Gorney's son tried to help his cousin in spite of his own injuries.

"He was pretty brave," Daly said of Gorney's son. "He was with me, talking to the kid. He told me he lives down the block. I told him, 'Go get your mom,' so that's what he did. He held it together pretty well."

Gorney appeared distraught in court as Assistant Cook County State's Atty. Susanne Groebner outlined the charges against him. His attorney, Beth Kita-Neslund, told Circuit Judge Raymond Myles that her client has been on suicide watch.

Kita-Neslund said Gorney has been married 46 years and has four adopted children. She said he had been a sheriff's deputy for 12 years.

Sheriff's Department spokesman Steve Patterson said Gorney was a part-time courtroom deputy from 1977 until he was dismissed in 1987.

Outside the courtroom, Kita-Neslund said Gorney is crushed by his great-nephew's death.

"The boys were best friends," she said of Troy and Gorney's son. "He's devastated. The whole family is devastated."

Well, after a minor scare last night after losing one of my fares, it popped back up this morning on the third try. So, we are now officially ticketed for CA at Christmas. Even better, we get to fly into Santa Ana which means my friend can pick us up and we don't have to worry about shuttles, etc. So we'll head out there Dec 21 and come back the 26th. I think we'll hit DL on the 22nd. I know it's going to be crazy busy, but it's a must do after all. We'll stay with my best friend and spend Christmas Day with Phil's family. Now if we can just work it out so that Phil actually gets to be there on Christmas Day as well.

I am glad that is all taken care of. Lots of PD that Phil can be there too!

What a horrible story, Kristine. That poor, poor family.

I don't think I have ever had to amend my ticker to make it longer before!

Rental car has been procured. Jeepers they were expensive to find. I ended up with an intermediate through Dollar for $253 for 6 days. That was a heckuva lot better than the $600 quotes from other companies!

Time for the news and then bed. I hope you all have good evenings. See you tomorrow! :goodvibes

I'm so tired I nodded off while waiting for this picture to load, but I had to share it.
