DDA Chapter 12

I just finished reading Stephenie Meyer's book "The Host". Very good! I think I liked it better than the "Twilight" series! I seriously cannot wait for book group to discuss this one. At first, I thought it was going to be too science fiction-y for me, but I really got pulled into it! It's definitely more complex and adult than her other stuff, but I really enjoyed it.

I give it 2:thumbsup2 :thumbsup2

Is it part of a series? If it is, is it the first in the series? I haven't read any of her stuff. Isn't "Twilight" about vampires?

Well she does give him a pacifier, but he tries so hard for his thumb and gets mad that he can't do it. He does however get it in is mouth when sleeping.

I can't believe that I actually encouraged her to suck her finger! That's something I will not do with Peanut. A pacifier is much easier to get rid of!

Glynis, I think the reason my cousin sucked her thumb for so long was that her mother took the bottle away real early.
Her thumb was misshapen because she sucked so hard and to this day its a little off.

Morning DDA!

I went to Target, Walmart and Payless Shoes on Saturday and Sunday - hopefully we have everything needed for the honeymoon now, from Bonine to our waterproof camera to toothpaste and lint rollers... I also have my dress hanging up in the closet, so that's good to go too. :teeth: Tonight I *HAVE TO* do the seating chart. If you see me online, tell me to do the seating chart. No ifs ands or buts about it. Must. Get. Done. Tonight.

Then I can start packing.
I cant believe how soon the wedding is!!!

Go Cowboys! :)

:)
YAY!!!
I thought that we weren't going to hold our 2 year old "Mommy/Daddy/Caregiver and me" type class because of low enrollment. My partner moved on to another more secure position. Now we suddenly have 7 people interested, and the director is thinking that we should do it with only me as the leader. Do you think that it is unreasonable for me to ask for 1.5 times last year's pay, since I will now have all the set-up, clean-up, and class prep by myself? The class fees will more than cover my pay plus supplies.

Not at all unreasonable--you should get more pay

Right now it is not part of a series. I don't know if she has plans to turn it into a series or not, but she certainly left it open for more. Twilight is about vampires, but the Host is not. It's a bit of science fiction, but it isn't TOO science fiction. I don't know if that makes sense or not.

Her thumb was misshapen because she sucked so hard and to this day its a little off.

Mary began sucking her thumb about an hour after she was born, but Leslie didn't start sucking her finger until she was 2. I haven't been too concerned because her teeth haven't been affected, but now that she's getting her adult teeth, it's time to stop it. It's just frustrating. She really only sucks when she's watching tv or listening to a story. I know she wants to stop, so hopefully we can find some incentive to get her to quit.

Personally, I think she started sucking her finger because her security blanket literally fell apart when she was 2. There wasn't enough left of the blanket to hold on to, and she never accepted another blanket in it's place. I think the finger took the place of the blanket.

I'm sorry that you'll be alone this week. I definitely think that you deserve some malts/shakes/sundaes/Golden Oreos, etc.

As to the thumbsucking thing, I hear ya! At first I was really happy that Leslie found a finger to suck. It really comforted her, and helped her sleep well. The doctor said it was perfectly normal for her to start sucking. She was getting jealous of all the attention Mary was getting, and the sucking helped her out. Mary sucked her thumb from the beginning, and was the first of the twins to stop. Leslie still sucks her finger, and we're trying to get her to stop, but nothing seems to help. If anyone has any suggestions, I'm open to them. We've tried the gross tasting paint, hot sauce, bribery, etc. Anything else?

My youngest sucked him thumb till he was nine. The ortho finally put in what is called a tongue guard. He stopped real soon after that.

We may have to resort to that. We did find something called a finger guard, but it's 70 dollars.:scared1: It might be worth it, however!

Ms. Selfish sucked her thumb FOREVER. I know she was still sucking it when she was 9, and after that I didn't live in the same house with her. She sucked her thumb so much it actually caused her palate to form with a thumb-shaped hollow in the roof of her mouth. Her teeth are very crooked.

That reminds me...
DS had surgery on his thumb when he was 4. At night we had to put his thumb in this little metal brace that was lined with foam. We called it "putting Thumbkin in his house." You see them a lot when people jam or sprain their fingers. I *think* you can buy them at the pharmacy. Maybe that would work?

I'm working on it now. Sort of.

I don't know why I didn't think of that! I even had to wear one of those when I broke my pinky! I'll show that to DH.

I just sat Leslie down and had a long talk with her. She's agreed to come up with an incentive to stop sucking her finger. She has until Alan gets home from work and then we'll work out all the details. She's not thrilled about it, but is agreeing to try.

Could her incentive be a pampering time including a mini manicure?? It doesn't have to be big but letting her pick a lotion and "real" nail polish to put on her fingers for a couple of days.

I am heading off friends...I got nearly no sleep last night and I am definitely fighting off something and I have to be 100% to meet Miss Glynis and her family at the end of the week.

Poor Pearl had to go get shaved today...she just came home. The poor girl also had a couple of other things wrong.

(It's a good thing I am a) read through my posts before posting (most of the time) and b) I am heading to bed....I just repeated myself three times and erased all but one):lmao:

We tried that earlier this year. It worked for a day, and then she sucked so hard, she sucked all the fingernail polish of all the fingers of her left hand!

We've tried giving her a bedtime only limit, but it's such an ingrained habit she can't confine it to just then. We drag her finger out of her mouth, and 5 minutes later, it's back. I'm willing to give it a try, though. Katie is working on getting rid of one of her bad habits, and we have a chart. She gets a dollar a day toward a Nintendo DS. I'll have to see if something like that would work for Leslie. Thanks for giving me an idea. Cold hard cash would motivate me!!!
At home give her something to do with her hands. Silly putty, play dough, easy sewing projects, etc. Something that will keep her hands out of her mouth. If she starts sucking tell her to get the project or thing or give her something to do. Having to get up and go get something or do something every time she sucks might remind her how much of a pain it is.
