DDA Chapter 12

Hi,
sorry I have not time to catch up...Yesterday was a rough day. Sophie came home & told me she passed out in school. Turns out she fell (none of the monitors saw her!) & hit her head & blacked out for a minute. She got up with her friends around her looking at her & she was embarrased so she didn't tell anyone. So of course I took her to the Dr who told me to take her to the ER right away. They did some tests & she has a concussion. No gym for a week & we have to keep an eye on her for vomiting or disorientation. We didn't get in until after 10pm so I am letting her sleep in & she will go to school late.

I had called her teacher yesterday to ask why no one saw her fall & I got alot of baloney. I am calling the principal (who is a real pitbull) to tell her what happened. I know she will blow me off & but I am going to make my point known.

Daniel's bus broke down coming home last night & one of Katie's teachers has some real mental problems so things here are very bumpy at the moment.

Oh & we may be moving before December so that has been a real whirlwind.

Sorry for the long post....Hope all is well you all.

I hope Sophie is feeling okay.
PD for all the school issues and for the move! :grouphug:

Theresa -- I'm glad you can't cancel your trip. You deserve it -- a break will hopefully help some.

Chanon -- glad your hand is better. Make sure to keep some polysporin or something similar on it. Burns can get infected easily.

Elin -- yeah for single digits!

Jennifer -- I hope your power is back on.

Amy -- how long is Kevin going to be in PT?

The weather here is so gorgeous! I don't think we will get over 86 for the rest of the week. We went to my nephew's football game last night and it was fun seeing a lot of the kids Andrew plays baseball with playing. Tonight we have to stop and get the supplies for Andrew's newest project and may go to the Homecoming bonfire.

Have a great day everyone!

Eric took 2/3rds of the girls over to his parents after dinner for a bit and came home with some news. Apparently his mom had went to the eye doctor a few weeks back and was diagnosed with cataracts. She went today for a 2nd opinion and found out that the blood vessels in her bad eye are burst or severed. Basically it means that she is blind in that eye. From what I got out of Eric there is little they can do. She has had numerous little accidents/incidences and I guess it all seems to make sense now. She works from the mid afternoon to late evening and I imagine that she will no longer be driving at night if at all.

I guess in the grand scheme of things butter seems insignificant!

Good thoughts for MIL! :wizard:

I figured those of us that have DVC could pool our points to rent it and invite those of you who didn't have DVC! Too bad they only sleep 9!

I never have any points. It's only been 4 months and I am pondering an add-on. We can't afford it right now, but I am pondering anyway.

Well, I am oficially in single digits now!
:yay: :yay: (Bob and me)

Yay! Are you packed?

Thanks Elin. We have always wanted to stay in one, wonder if we would be able to rent one without being DVC members?

If I understand properly, no DVC property is 100% reserved for DVC members. They set aside a percentage of rooms to go through CRO. I would imagine the Treehouse Villas will be the same, BUT since they will be part of SSR that might not be the case. :confused3

Wow! Definitely a rough day! Lots of hugs to your family!

Princess has school today. No big plans for me.

Good morning, DDA!

Amy and Tom and Chanon - I think I forgot to say that I am very glad that things are much better for you all now, as far as cleanup and power being restored. Poor Jennifer and Kyle! We had to deal with massive power outages during an ice storm in Ohio about 21 years ago. I hope it doesn't take them as long to restore Jennifer's power. We finally moved into a hotel in Dayton for a week!!

pixiedust: that Jennifer gets her power back on soon!

Thanks, everyone, for your concern. I actually slept really well last night. I only had to get up once to go to the bathroom!!!

The biggest problem now is the constantly aching back! Nothing helps, so I'm just trying to find ways to deal with it.

Other than that, things are going really well. Katie is being a huge help, fixing dinner for me, as I recline on the couch and tell her what to do. She's been a bit of a pill lately, so it's nice to see the soft side of her again. She's going out of town with Alan this weekend for some one on one time. Hopefully that will sweeten her disposition even more.

 I am sorry to hear about your back. Yay for Katie!

stop the stupid merry go round I want to get off. :headache: :sad1:

I am tired of still having to rob Peter to pay Paul and still not paying everything, telling the girls "no" to nearly everything. I am tired of hating my job, tired of being unhappy. I am tired of crying, I am tired of putting on a happy face.

In essence I am just tired. Thank goodness the trip is already paid for and is nonrefundable or I would have been tempted, for a second, to cancel it

I had to get that off my chest...don't feel better yet but maybe I will later.

  I wish that there were something that I could do to help. I am glad that you get to run away for a little while.

I found a new recipe that was a hit for the whole family.

STIR-FRIED BEEF TERIYAKI

1 lb. boneless lean beef (chuck, round or flank)
3 tbsp. soy sauce
2 tbsp. honey
2 tbsp. lemon juice
1/2 tsp. minced fresh ginger root or 1/8 tsp. powdered ginger
1 clove garlic, minced or pressed
2 tbsp. salad oil

1. With sharp knife, cut meat across grain into 1/8 inch thick slices.
2. Mix soy sauce, honey, sherry, ginger and garlic in bowl. Add beef and mix to coat pieces well. Let stand 15 minutes. Drain but reserve liquid.
3. Heat oil in wok or wide frying pan over high heat. When hot, add half the meat and stir fry about 2-3 minutes until browned. Repeat for the second batch of meat.
4. Transfer to serving dish. Add reserved marinade to pan. Heat to boiling. Stir then pour over meat.

I served this over rice and also sauted some onions, carrots, and sugar snap peas to mix with the beef. Yum!

That does sound yummy! I will write this down. I've been in a bit of a rut with dinners lately.

That is NOT what I wanted to hear!!! :goodvibes

The stuff she had tonight was something I could handle, thank goodness. But I think they need to send home cheat sheets for the parents.

 I'm sorry, but it does get better. Really Laura only has homework drama once every couple of weeks now. It really peaked in 7th grade which has been the worst homework year for both her and Matthew so far. For some reason, they really pile it on in 7th grade. Or at least that one particular team did. She and Matthew were on the same team for 7th grade. I think there were times that she moaned and complained and cried about how she was too stupid to do an assignment longer than the assignment actually took her once she started it. (And her grades showed that she wasn't too stupid to do it. ) She was relegated to her room for the moaning, complaining, crying part and given any encouragement/help needed once she was in the calmer, working part. That seemed to do the trick.

We do get math cheat sheets here this year. Would you like me to forward ours on to you. :rotfl:

Welcome Dana! :goodvibes

I'm Amy (age 36), a very sleep-deprived mother of three (Alyssa, age 4; Matthew aka Matty, age 2; and Noah, 2 1/2 months). I've been a SAHM for four years, and I hold a degree in secondary communications education (I taught high school for nine years before Alyssa came along). I'm married to Kevin (age 37) who recently tore a calf muscle coaching Alyssa's soccer team. He's employed as a county prosecutor and he's also president of our city council. We live 15 miles north of Cincinnati.

I wish I knew Robyn in real life, too! She and I could go into the cake-making business! :teeth:

Ooooh! Can I come help with the cake decorating, too?! I can specialize in the chocolate cake with the raspberry white chocolate cream cheese filling and cheesecakes.

Does anyone want a husband? I am sure you don't but thought I'd ask anyway! Every thing he is doing is just aggravating me to pieces but tonight at dinner I'd thought I'd have to choke him. Over what, you ask? Mashed potatoes and butter. Eric cooked dinner- meatloaf, mashed potatoes and broccoli. Emma or Molly asked for butter and his response was "There's no need for it do without" UGH, why is it a big deal. Go get the butter and put it on their potatoes and even broccoli if they wanted. For crying out loud who eats plain mashed potatoes! Stupid, huh?!?
Oh, I already have one of those! He also thinks that you don't need butter for corn on the cob (though I've learned to love it plain, too). He now just gets a death look from me, and the kids get their butter. They don't overdo it.

Tuna Pizza sounds good. I haven't made that in a while...I'll have to add premade pizza crust to my shopping list (and tuna and onion and cheese...)

...oh yeah I got a box from Cinci today!
001-3.jpg

(you guys tired of boxes yet?!)
I can never get tired of boxes!

OK, 7th grade is NOT GOOD. DS came home and said he had no homework. Which is true if you spin it the right way. DS has like 5 different things due Friday, and none of them are finished. :scared: Two of them were just assigned today, 2 of them are things that are due every Friday (reading log and summaries of 2 TV news stories), and one is a HUGE project that isn't due until next month but the directions are very confusing. :headache: He has to make a brochure (like the one from last year, but without directions!). The stupid brochure counts as a project grade in ALL OF HIS CORE CLASSES! He can work with a partner, but DS isn't clear on whether or not they can work on it at school. He also hasn't firmed up WHO his partner will be, but the 2 he named are good choices. The directions say something about 4 pages. OK, so, like a whole 8x11 page? That's not a brochure where I come from. And DS has no clue, because that's how he rolls.
Is it June yet? I really need it to be June now.
 As mentioned earlier, 7th grade was our worst year. I hope that it gets better for you and ds.

Robyn - he seriously needs to just give them butter!

Thanks to everyone for the many welcomes! For those of you who asked, I am 33 yrs old (turning 34 during my upcoming DW trip), married to a great husband (Robyn's kindergarten boyfriend I might add), and have 2 DD - Sydney, 5 yrs :cheer2: and Katelyn 2 yrs princess: . I'm a elementary math resource teacher, which basically means I travel to about 12 schools in my county helping teachers be better math teachers! :teacher: It is a thankless job right now, as we've just adopted a new math program and everyone's struggling. I taught 4th grade for several years and miss it but this job gives me lots of flexibility, a great boss, and good experience should I decide to use my hard-earned master's degree and go into adminstration.

As for Disney, we typically go to DW every other year in the blistering hot days of July or August, since that's when I'm off work. This year, I've managed to convince DH to go at Christmas. So, we're leaving on Black Friday and driving to DW, unless airfare prices go down. We're staying at CBR. We stayed there in 2007 and loved it so we decided to go there again. As Robyn said, my 5 year old doesn't know about the trip yet. I'm trying to find a good way to tell her but without a holiday or birthday coming, I'm stumped. I'll take suggestions!!! I told the 2 year old but only because I couldn't stand keeping it a secret any longer and, since she can't really tell her sister, the secret is still safe.

I think that about covers it. Again, thanks to everyone for the welcome. I'll try to keep up but I'm already overwhelmed at the number of posts here.

Dana
Once again, welcome! We have a new elementary math program that started last year...Everyday math. Personally, I hate it. I don't do well with change, but I also honestly think that I have valid, logical reasons for hating this program. Fortunately, Miles is much more adaptable than I am, and he is having no problems with it. There were plenty of students who did, since they completely changed they way they were adding and regrouping. I think they have renamed regrouping again, too, but I can't remember what it's called now (I grew up with "carrying" and "borrowing".) I'm not even going to get into the complex matrix that they have to draw when they want to multiply numbers. Oh, well...you didn't ask for a rant! What I wanted to say, was I think that your new job is definitely an important one! I know that there were (and maybe still are) teachers struggling with these changes, too.

I took my younger two to WDW this summer. It was kind of a surprise trip. I told Laura (14 turning 15) a couple of months before the trip. She loves the planning and anticipation, and I didn't want to take that from her. For her, I made a photo album of our previous trip. At the end, I had a page that told her that we were going again in August. I gave it to her on one of the Regents days at the end of June when she was the only child home. We told Miles a couple of days before the trip. Complete surprises tend to throw my kids for a loop, and I also wanted to give him a little time to come to terms with the fact that dh and my oldest weren't going with us. For him we made up a treasure hunt (he has always loved hunts) where the clues lead him to scrambled words that he had to unscramble and then put together into a sentence: "Miles, Laura, and Mommy are going to Disney World on Wednesday." He loved it, and never questioned why he was getting a treasure hunt out of the blue.

I've worked so hard to make everyone here think I am normal and you blow it in one post!!:rotfl:
Oh, Robyn, did you start thinking you were normal? You're just as crazy as the rest of us, so it seems normal.

Let me guess....Everyday Math, or whatever it's called. This is our second year with it, and I'm having a hard time accepting it.

That's what we started with last year! I have several issues with it, but I won't get started again. :rotfl: I will say that you don't take kids who are adept at adding with regrouping and tell them that they are going to start adding "backwards". Also, have you starting multiplication matrices yet. They are ridiculous. And I don't like the whole "spiraling" concept. Wait! I got started again. Nevermind...

:worship: I bow to your manipulative powers! :worship:

It's called Envision Math. And I envision myself having to go back to elementary school to help her out.

Thanks.

:rotfl: We do get "cheat sheets" with our program this year. I don't remember them in third grade.

Night everyone. I'm off to read a few more chapters of "The Host." It's really intriguing!!! I'm enjoying it a lot!

Alan gave me a back rub when he came home from work, and is offering another one before I go to sleep. What a guy!:lovestruc :lovestruc :lovestruc I may have to keep him around for a while!
I should put The Host on reserve at the library. It will probably take a while to get at this point. I'm reading a cute young adult novel now, My Most Excellent Year: A Novel of Love, Mary Poppins, and Fenway Park by Steve Kluger. It's just something that I grabbed off the "new book" shelf at the library.

Hi,
sorry I have not time to catch up...Yesterday was a rough day. Sophie came home & told me she passed out in school.

 I am so sorry! I know that accidents happen (Matthew needed stitches in his head from a recess accident in third grade), but for no one to see it or know about it is hard to believe. Not a single one of the kids who saw it mentioned it at all? They didn't notice her on the ground with a group of kids around her?

 for Katie, too. That must be difficult for her to cope with day in and day out.

I hope that things are less stressful for you soon!

Robyn, I am so sorry to hear about your MIL's eye problems. My SIL is blind in one eye and can do everything (except enjoy 3-D movies :rotfl: That's actually one of her little jokes). She has been that way since she was young, though, so she has made all the adaptations as she grew up. I hope that your MIL can adapt relatively easily.

Where's that smiley of the guy beating the stuffing out of his computer. First I had too many images. So I split the post. Still had too many images in the first post. Removed some of them. Then for some reason I was no longer logged in. Logged in (and the message was still there...thank goodness!). Posted the first part of the message. Went to post the second part...had to wait another 14 seconds. WOW!

I thought they tore down the tree house's.

They did, but they are building new ones  I'm excited that they are part of SSR as that is our home resort and we can book at the 11 month window :thumbsup2

I think Chanon found the perfect hug smilie. It seems that when it rains it pours and you have your own little Tropical Storm brewing. Stay strong and tackle things as they come up, that's the best you can do

I think that I'm feeling better this morning. I still sound horrible, but I spent a lot less time hacking this morning that I have the last couple. I'm planning to work tonight so hopefully the rest of the day will go smoothly.

I spent hours yesterday running and rerunning antivirus and antispam programs. This computer had 3 trojan virus'. I think the boys are getting them on some site that they get Nintendo DS cheat code off of. We also had tons of tracking cookies. As of this morning all computers were completely cleaned up. I guess I'll need to run the programs daily until I figure out exactly which sites are giving us problems.

Yep! And it's one of the only ways that Bob will eat tuna! Though I add onion and celery and use different cheese...I do kind of "bake" the boboli bread before adding the tuna though...I find out that the bread it too chewy if I don't do that first. (PS - My hand is good! It's just red and does't hurt much anymore!)
I cut back on the mayo and add Ranch dressing. Gives it a little zing.

HI! :goodvibes

No time really at all to post, but I wanted to check in. I have been keeping updates on the laptop which I posted to the blog today if anyone is interested in the events of our last few days. Don't worry, only "Part 1" (of .... 5?) is very long. It's also the most interesting though, with everything but cows flying along the highway, my adventures in helping my dog pee, etc. It's been interesting to see what a whole day of hurricane winds can do to a city that a) wasn't expecting much and b) doesn't even sell any building materials in town that withstand much more than 40-50mph winds! I'm just glad we don't get the water, too! :wizard:

I hope everyone is doing well. I plan on catching up some day (about 40 pages back so far... slow down! :rotfl:) Please let me know if our friends in Texas and Illinois are doing all right! :grouphug:

Wow Anne Marie - here's a big  . I hope Sophie doesn't have an further issues. What's up with Katie's teacher? Here's some :wizard: that your stress level comes down a bit.

:scared1: I just got used to the regrouping!

Last year, 2nd grade, they taught both ways of doing math. From what I understand, after this they let the children decide which way they prefer.

:scared1: I just got used to the regrouping!

Last year, 2nd grade, they taught both ways of doing math. From what I understand, after this they let the children decide which way they prefer.

Our school did finally decide to let the children add they way that they prefer. And they did teach multiplication without the complex matrix (though still more complex than it needs to be), so it is good for different learning styles. Hopefully, the children will be able to sort through the confusion and find a way that clicks for them. Like I said, Miles is far more adaptable than I am, so he had no trouble doing it every way that they were taught, and I just kept my mouth shut.

The matrix was an ordeal if you ask me though. Maybe I'll try to remember what it looks like and scan it in for you so that you have a little warning.

I also am learning to become adaptable. Last night, Miles had a homework crossword puzzle for social studies. The one clue was "Ocean east of Africa" but he had already used "Indian" and "Atlantic" fit into the spaces. So I told him to cross out east and write west in the clue. My older kids told me that you can't just change crossword clues to suit you. I told them that I was just trying to be adaptable for a change. :rotfl: Obviously, there was a mistake on the worksheet.

I read everything. You all were chatty!

Lots of hugs and PD to Theresa and Robyn. MEN! and MONEY! Hate 'em both myself, at times.

Glad you are feeling better, Tammi. Deb - I hope you also are doing better too.

Glynis - hang in there... you are cooking Peanut well!

I am sure I missed someone. Sorry about that. Time for bed here. Night all!

Thanks. I'm trying! I asked Alan last night if it made me a horrible person to wish that the doctor would put me on bed rest. Since that's the only position that helps my back. He laughed and told me not a horrible person, just a normal one. There's that "normal" word again!

Let me guess....Everyday Math, or whatever it's called. This is our second year with it, and I'm having a hard time accepting it.

this is our 9th or 10th year with it (Everyday Math, elementary, whatever it's called in MS and IMP in HS) and while I have no clue most days how to help the girls with it I do know that it is working for most kids. The one year Cassidy didn't have it (went to a school for a year) she was so far ahead of the kids that she could have taught regular math.

There is a math help book available through Abi's school store that is supposed to be a great help for the parents and kids. I was planning on getting it (with both girls in the classes and advanced to boot) and I will send you a copy if it seems to be of help.
