DDA Chapter 10

I have to say that I completely agree with this. One set of my great-grandparents came from Italy, and the other set from what was Yugoslavia. And they also did it LEGALLY. Ok, now I've got to get off of this soapbox before I put my foot in my mouth and offend someone.

I asked Kristin if she thought I had overstepped my boundaries too. She said, "No, but don't say any more." :rotfl2:

popcorn:: :rolleyes1

I have to tell you that we definitely noticed a shift at WDW this trip. English speaking people were clearly the minority. There were huge tour groups from Brazil, Argentina and even Mexico. I was also suprised that so many of the family units were not speaking english. I'm not even sure which language was most prevailent since I don't understand any of it, except for a little french and that wasn't it :confused3

So here's a question from a small town girl. Around here the only language spoken is English. You rarely here another language, but if you do it is usually French or more likely Canadian French. All of our signs, etc are in English, no other translations. Is this only a Northeast thing?

I think it is a Northeast thing, but also it depends on the area. We have started to see a few signs in Spanish because of the requests here have increased and a lot of jobs require Spanish as a second language.

I have seen that some companies are beginning to bring their companies back to the U.S. because of the language problem at least for the inbound call centers. I am getting to almost ask every time for a supervisor if I think I will have any kind of "understanding" our conversation problem.

I would guess so, due to your proximity to Canada. Around here there is everything, Spanish, Korean, Chinese, Japanese, various Middle Eastern languages, etc.

Jennifer- I read your blog and you are absolutely in my prayers. And :yay: on 5 hours!!

Thanks! :goodvibes

3 hours...6 phone calls....MAJOR aggravation...I "think" and the operative word is think, my situation is resolved. However, until I see the $200 credit on my CC...I do not believe it!! This was by far the worst consumer experience I have ever had

I hope it really is resolved!

Hmm... around here, it depends where you are. Most signs in public (roads, etc) are only in English. Many privately owned places you will definitely see English and Spanish, and sometimes French. Hearing other languages, though, happens everywhere, all the time... Aside from Spanish, you will also hear a lot of Hindi or Arabic, Chinese and Japanese, and other specifically Asian languages.

WOW what a wild few days! Got home late Thursaday from the Hollywood/DL trip(long drive :car: )
Friday I don't remember much.... I know we washed clothes, put somethings away, I picked up the dog at 0815 ( no sleeping in for me) then took her to get a bath. Mark had a haircut and I had a meeting later that evening.

Saturday we did a little more putting things away and then it was off to my 20 yr HS reunion. Took the girls to y moms for the evening and then off we went. It was alright, but nothing WOW. I must say many more people said hi to me then I thought would.

Yesterday we had to get up and get moving because we had a meeting with some folks from LA. (was scheduled for Sat but moved to yesterday) I love these guys! They are so down to earth and fun. They are not asking for anything upfront and only ask we pay for something if they have to pay for it, then if it sells they get a part of it.
They loved Ellie and want to write childrens books about her, then make her into a cartoon and sitcom. They have written a song for her and want her to make an album w/i the next few years. They are BIG into education and want her to do thing relating to it. :woohoo:
So I have sent them a few stories about her and need to gather more things silly, sad, etc so they have ideas to work with.
I can't tell you how proud I am to know someone wants to write books about my kid.... that is the biggest honor in my book.

I will be going back to LA in the next few weeks to meet with a few folks again. I love this one company KSAwest, they don't care that we live out of the area and love both girls. They are also down to earth and real folks, a bit more Hollywood types, but I felt a good feeling in my gut when I spoke with them (I did not get that feeling with other folks we talked with). So we shall see.

I will have pictures and video for you all to see, but not sure when it will get uploaded.

Thank you all for the birthday wishes, this year was so much better than last. We had our meeting with the LA guys and then tried to make the family BBQ from the reunion, but we were to late so we had ice cream with an old friend of mine. Then it was home to let the girls play outside and Mark took me out to eat (the girls stayed with Cassie).

I do hope all is well with the DDA, please post me some cliff notes so I can catch up with how things are.

Off to clean a bit and get back in the swing of things.

i COMPLETELY agree! The yellow shirts..the red shirts..the blue shirts...I have always seen tour groups but i thought this trip was defintely different

fundamentally I believe due to so many cost cutting tactics by the larger companies...that almost all customer service has been sent out of this country....and I don't see it returning any time soon...

Of course, as Kristin just reminded me... the chances of getting a CS rep who is actually located IN this great country of ours is next to impossible!

in my immediate area...and the immediate surrounding suburbs...it is almost exclusively english speaking.......although, I see an increase in the Russian population here....we have several families living on the street behind us...although in 1/2 a year they were speaking better English than my kids!

I am about 1/2 hour from the city of Chicago where of course there is a lot of different languages spoken, signage etc....

Our portraits are online! :yay:

There is a slideshow and/or a link on the latest blog entry if you'd like to look at all the proofs (I think around 40?). Otherwise, here is just a sampling! :goodvibes

Paula, Welcome home! Happy late birthday, too! Sounds like things are really taking off for you guys! Congratulations! :goodvibes

Jennifer, OMG! How sweet are those babies? :lovestruc

Most signs are in English around here, or there are English and Spanish posted together. But I think the majority of the city speaks either ONLY Spanish or Spanish is the first language with variable English fluency. Half the time the people they interview on the news require a translator. My Spanish is pretty weak. Just ask the housekeeper! :rotfl2: She is from Honduras and speaks like NO English. She talks to me exclusively in Spanish. Sometimes I get it, sometimes not. I had 2 years of Spanish is high school and a semester in college but it obviously didn't stick.

The 2 are my favorites. :goodvibes

Hi Paula. It sounds like you have a star or 2 in your future. Congrats. Thanks for the postcard.

If I could have some prayers/pd/good thoughts/or whatever you've got. I got a call today from the imaging center that did my mammo. I have to go back Wed. AM for a diagnostic mammo with and ultrasound, as they found an area that they are concerned about. I really don't have time for any issues. :sad2:
