DD hurt her knee.........is it something or nothing? UPDATE #24

Better safe than sorry, have it looked at! I hope she feels better soon!

My son has a condition that I ignored basically for years. He complained of pain and he would sprain his knees and ankles often. Watching him when he was small sometimes he would be running along in the yard and just stop. Anyway, long story, so I willbasically say, he has a condition that causes his joints to be too loose...essentially making them very weak. He ended up in physical therapy for it and now we have to pay special attention to it , reference sports. Its not dangerous or anything he is just more prone to dislocation of his joints and injury because of it.

Sending Pixie Dust to Jessie! :wizard: Tell her the "screaming lady" siad Hi and best of Luck! ::yes::

...and it doesn't look good!!! :guilty: Jess is on crutches, is wearing a "leg immobilizer" and has to have an MRI. There are 2 possible culprets to her pain (and either one or both of them could be involved): One is a torn ACL (seeing how her pain is located EXACTLY where this ligament is) or it could be a torn meninus (sp??) since when he applied pressure to the knee, you could hear the "pop" across the room! She needs to go back in 2 weeks and I have to bring the MRI films with me. That will determine where we go from here. :crazy2:

Here's hoping it's nothing................ :scared:

Bummer - maybe it will heal up quick. Kids are resilliant little things!

Meniscus

I have always had a hard time with my knees. So much so that I had to drop out of all my sports in high school because they would constantly hurt and swell. My injury is a lot different from what youre describing though.
Mine is degenerative.

Meniscus tears can hurt really bad but often can be healed with arthroscope :)

I hope she feels better soon, I spent a lot of my high school in one of those dumb imobilizers and crutches. :( I feel for her!

Oh that poor thing! It is a good thing you took her to the doctors right away, waiting would have made it worse. I popped my knee cap when I was younger and walked around with it for a while, until I couldn't stand it! Turns out because I was favoring it I started to deteriorate my muscles around the knee cap. I still have pain till this day and know have osteo arthristis in my knee.

Here's hoping it isn't that bad. Out of the two things what is the better scenario?

I just had ACL replacement surgery in August, and while he was in there he repaired my meniscus too. If you want to know anything, PM me or reply.

I can tell you the mensicus pain was WAAAY worse then the ACL. And my ACL was MIA. We still don't know where it went! :confused3 So now I have somebody elses.

Yikes oh no! I wish your daughter a speedy recovery, I hope her knee gets better soon and the MRI isn't bad.

My DD12 has fractured her kneecap, twice :earseek: and the same thing happened to her. She was on crutches and in an immobilizer for about 8wks. When I realized she was favoring the leg, I had her evaled by a physical therapist. Turns out she had lost muscle mass in her hip and leg and it was causing mild scoliosis :faint: So after several months of therapy plus swimming plus doctor-prescribed ballet(no, insurance would not pay--I wish...) she was back on track again. She only has trouble when it rains, and her ped says she probably already has some arthritis, poor kid.

What really stinks for her is that she is in the school play. She has been in rehearsals with them since early Dec. They open next month. I would hate to see her not be able to go on. We also don't know how in the world she is going to be able to rehearse until then!! :confused3 She can do the singing, but not the dancing.

I am having another scope in about 6 weeks. I wanted to wait until the summer but the dr. said I wouldn't make it that long. Torn ACL vs torm meniscus...torn meniscus is way more painful to me...that is what I am having fixed now.

edited to fix spelling sorry...

I am not a doctor but we just went through this in the fall w/ my ds (he injured his knee in a dirtbike accident). I'll recite what we were told. If the ACL is torn they can't repair it in children until they are done growing (18-21 generally). Which is the worst case scenario. I know a torn ACL was a possibility w/ us. Ours turned out to be an ACL avulsion w/ an additional fracture in the tibia. My son had to have his leg straight out in a full cast (tippy toes to the very-very upper thigh) for this to heal. The extreme cast was for the ACL avulsion and not the tibia fracture. This was for just shy of 3 months. He came off crutches just before the holiday's and he was hurt 9/14.
Just be sure that if it is a serious injury you try to get to a pediatric ortho-- there are all sorts of issues w/ the growth plates in the knee's that have to be taken into account w/ kids. I know we ended up w/ a trauma ortho-- who only deals w/ ortho issues arising from serious accidents and he came highly recommended for ds's issue.

That's awful! Here's hoping for a quick recovery!!

We are taking her to the orthopedic doctors out of St. Christopher's hospital for children. I thought it best since they specialize in children (and my son had surgery there in Sept. and they were outstanding!! :flower: )

PS How can I be sure that she doesn't break anything else using these crutches?? She's downright dangerous...just ask the dog! :earseek:

Yikes. Here is wishing good news for your daughter from her MRI or that she will have a speedy recovery if something else needs to be done.

Oh gosh! Wishing her a speedy recovery.

I just came back for the orthopedist a while ago finding out than I have a torn ACL and meniscus. :[ I know the feeling. I'm out for the rest of the basketball season. Drat, it's my freshman year and I'm on varisty too. Oh well. Let us know how it goes!
