So we decided to get up and go to Ihop for breakfast Saturday morning. Packed as usual. We put our name on the list and sat down to wait. DD asks me if this couple and their son look famaliar. So I look at them casually (however DD disagrees) and she elbows me telling me to stop staring. So being the mature mother that I am I elbow her back. DD says "Grow up, Mom".

A minute or so later the guy of the couple left the area and went outside. The woman then is telling her friends that he left because this little brat told her mom to grow up and it offended him. I should have slapped her, she's disrepectful, a brat, etc.

It took me a minute to figure out that we were who they were talking about. I never thought someone would be gutsy enough to talk about someone that is literally less than 2 feet away from them. I was flabbergasted!

After they got seated DBF said its a good thing they don't see us at home. We aren't the most mature acting family around. lol

I mean, honestly, if you think DD was a brat have a private conversation at your table about it. Do you really need to talk about us in front of us? I was too shocked to say anything. Actually I wouldn't have known what to say anyway.

Yes, DD can be a brat sometimes. What 14 year old girl isnt? lol

I think the ones who needed to grow up were these adults. They chose to be offended. She didn't do anything to them. So as my 13 YO would say "What-evah!"

People...need to learn to mind their own business. Try not to let their nosey misjudgment bother you. ;)

You mean my dd13 is a little brat who says "grow up mom" everytime I do something silly in public to embarrass her? :lmao:

Ignore them. They are probably raising snowflakes!!!!

They did have a 2 year old with them. When they left all I could think was "your turn is coming." lol

mjkacmom, yes your DD is obviously a brat as well. The best part of having teenagers is to be able to embarass them in public places. lol

Wow - there was definitely bratty behavior going on but it wasn't your dd.

While there are times telling your mom to grow up could be seen as bratty, this doesn't sound like one of them. Even if she WAS being bratty, can you imagine slapping your teenager every time they were trying to "keep their parents in line" in public? My kids would have bruises! ;)

Wow

I'm the immature mother of a 14 year old brat too... I can see where you're coming from, definitely. I'm thinking that I would have been a bit obnoxious myself if I'd heard that and knew it was directed at me; I don't put up with people talking down to me or my kid like that. Should have SLAPPED her??? It would have ended right there, wowza. :sad2:

I'm sorry you had to hear that, that's very uncool

Oh, you handled that better than I would have, because I would have said something to them! They were the ones who were rude! They have no idea what you and your DD weretalking about, as it was a private conversation and they took it totally out of context! Some people.....

I guess I have a brat at home too then. :lmao: Well they sound like they are in for a real reality check when their 2 year old grows up! :rolleyes1

Boy, those people were brats. ;)

I can't imagine what they'd have said about me with my kids. :rotfl:

Wow OP, you must have a very special brat if she could manage to offend someone so bad that they actually have to get up an leave, by not even doing anything to them.

There should be an award for her :cheer2::cheer2:

I honestly can't believe there are people who would do that. If I was you I wouldn't have been able to contain myself and probably would have offended the woman so bad that she would have had to leave too :rolleyes1

Once good thing came of it.....those people left and made the wait list one party shorter......IDIOTS!!

They'll get theirs...you can count on it

That was pretty rude of those other people. They had to have known that you could hear them.

Not sure why that other guy was offended because of something YOUR daughter said to YOU. She wasn't talking to him.

DH and I must be brats. We tell each other to grow up when one of us acts silly...or the other just joins in. We even shoot straw wrappers at each other when we go out to eat. :)

This is one of those moments where I'd have no problem pulling an "Excuse me? Do you have some sort of problem with my child?" Because as soon as those morons got called out on their rudeness, they likely would have clammed up and done the "stare-at-floor" routine.

Good grief how can he possibly go out in public at all?!

After reading some responses, I take it we aren't the only parents that purposely do things in public to embarass our teenager! :rolleyes1:thumbsup2 WVJules, I wouldn't worry about it, they obviously have a stick up somewhere!

well. they wouldn't like the three of us!!! DH, DD, and I act like that all the time!!! The elbowing , and picking on each other, and telling each other to grow up (kidding!) - and even shut up in fun....... She is an only child, so we tell her it is our job to give her the "sibling experience"!!!!:rotfl::rotfl2:

Seriously, I would have yelled "we're kidding, people!!!"

:wizard:

A grown man got that offended by a conversation between you and your daughter? Sounds like he's the one who needs to grow up!

I've had similar situations like this with my 14 year old son who has Asperger's. He tends to say things that would be considered socially unacceptable but social skills are his biggest issue. I don't always correct him in public. Sometimes I'll ask him later, "Did you handle that situation well? Tell me something else you could have said to make your point." Then we'll do some role-playing and work through it. It's an on-going process but he has improved considerably in the past several years. People have no idea what his issues are and whether or not we are correcting him. They just like to judge. But I've learned to ignore people's reactions and go on about our business.
