DD had her ears back in Dec. She was wearing some little pearls this week & it looks like 1 pearl kinda sat into her hole too much - stretching out the hole. I noticed it 'cause I actually thought the pearl was gonna go completely into the hole!

I changed the earrings out last night -

Do I need to do anything to get that hole to close back up some? Will it close? Do I need to worry about anything? Should I have not put other earrings in?

This happened with my DD22, of course she was only about 8 when it happened. Just put some other earrings in (we went with some hoops) and give it a little time, they will close up some. :)q

This has happened to us too. The ear will close back up around the post. It usually happens from the earring back being on too tight. No worries! Now, I could tell you a really horrific story about earrings and berber carpeting......:scared1:

This happened to DD to the point the entire earring back was INSIDE her earlobe. I luckily was able to get it out, but it was a complete mess. I switched her to the locking hoop earrings, the ones with a post so air could get to both sides of the hole. It did take some time, but her holes have closed up around the new post. I'm still not comfortable with her wearing regular post earrings, so she still wears the hoop ones.

A little girl in my Kindergarten class had the backs of her earrings go completely inside her earlobes. She had to have SURGERY to have them removed!!:scared1:

I'm glad you're on top of this for your DD's sake. This child in my room, at age 5, was responsible for taking care of her newly pierced ears herself. Her mom told me that, with toddler twins to take care of, she just didn't have the time. The child had been losing the backs off of her earrings, which was causing the earring to fall off and become lost as well. Mom told her to keep checking to make sure the backs were on tight, and as a result, the child gradually pushed them right into her ears.

I have had an ear lobe absorb an earring when I was younger. Parents took me to the urgent care clinic and it had to be yanked out from behind. :scared1: Boy did that hurt--but the front part of the whole had completely sealed and there was no getting it back out the normal way.

So you do have a right to be concerned.

I would let her ear lobes rest a couple of days--and then use a slightly larger stud.

Also--it could be that she had the earring back on wayyyyy too tight, perhaps out of fear of losing the earring. It doesn't need to be cemented on and replacing an earring is much less painful than what I experienced.

I do have to buy my girls "pricier" earrings--they have to be sterling silver or 14K gold posts--at least for my older DD b/c she will get nasty infections otherwise. But I do try to stress with them to not pinch the back on so tight and I'd rather have to replace the earring than for the ear lobe to absorb it.

Also--removing her earrings at night will give her lobes a chance to rest.

Likely the hole is not permanently enlarged since the "pearl" didn't go all the way in.

Also--the decoration on her earrings may be too small. Look for a slightly larger setting and consider some "hoop" style earrings that will not abosrb into the lobe.

Maybe this is one of the reasons I remember being told to "twirl" my earrings when I got my ears pierced at 16. If you're able to twirl them they are not too tight.

Good luck! I hope your DD will be OK.

Thanks for the comments! Gosh I would have never thought about the reason it happened was the back being too tight...of course when I came across the earrings (in jewelry box - were probably sisters) I thought they were sweet & dainty - never even knew there was a risk...

I actually assumed hoops would be more dangerous for a child - I have the fears of someone (or dd) getting a finger stuck in her earring & pulling it all the way threw the lobe.

Though I wore the tiny loops as a kid I remember getting my long hair stuck in the hoops & it tugging & drove me crazy - not bad of course- just bothersome

And yes - I knew she was supposed to twist them daily the 1st 6 wks or so. these were so tiny she actually would have had a hard time grasping them to twist.

My DD who was about 8 at the time maybe younger had the whole earring stuck in her ear - only a small part was sticking out. I ended up taking her to the Dr. and having him remove it - he had to pull it out - as I couldn't do it. To this day she doesn't wear small post earrings. She is now 16. She still talks about it. Her ear closed back but the head of the earring wasn't that big that went into the ear. My Aunt had given her earrings that were too small but they were cute. We will never make that mistake again. She now has her cartiledge (sp) pierced and we won't put a real small earring in it.
