DCL on points and cash question

We're considering booking DCL with points and cash - but I have a quick question... if we do this, when will we have to pay the cash?

We've not booked DCL with points before, and we've not done anything "cash" with DVC either.

Any tips or extra expenses we need to think about? I know the $95 for the booking fee. What about trip insurance - I know we always get a flyer when we do DVC bookings - will that be the same situation for DCL? Our previous DCL's have all been through a TA.

Thanks.

You have to pay all of the cash portion (cruise fare, taxes and $95 booking fee) at the time of booking.

I would suggest getting trip insurance from someone other than DCL. Their policies are not as comprehensive as others yet the cost is among the highest I've seen. We have used Travelex and would recommend them. When we had to cancel a cruise within the penalty window they covered everything and were very efficient in getting a check to us.

Yes, all cash portions (including the $95 fee) will be due in full at time of booking via credit card.

As far as insurance, for point coverage you will find Travelguard to be the only company that reimburses on DVC points. I have purchased medical trip insurance, for example, via AAA for my cruises booked on points, but that did not cover the cruise point cost itself. The trip insurance is offered through DVC, not DCL for those cruises booked on points. A brochure with the appropriate contact information will be included with your DVC confirmation...

That being said, the reimbursement is only $5 per point so it is minimal at best. I probably will be adding it on for our upcoming Baltic Cruise though.

I would be interested to hear if the above poster using Travelex had coverage for her DVC points, or if it was on the cash portions only...

Bring lots of extra money for the spa!!! We went for one treatment on our first sea day and got hooked and went for 3 more on the trip..lol

We were not using DVC points for that sailing so I have no experience getting reimbursed for them. I actually hadn't even considered the point issue when recommending Travelex, but it's definitely an important one.

Thanks for the replies. I did call MS today to get quotes for Alaska and asked about the cash payments, etc. We have pretty much decided that we'll do points for the four of us for the Alaska cruise. We'll def. check into the travel insurance that you all recommend - at what point do you have to get trip insurance before travel (typically)?
