We actually had to cancel this cruise:headache: Dan's job was just not being flexible because he is taking 11 days off at the end of June and for this he would need the whole week and then mon, tues and maybe weds of the next week. They didn't say no but he just feels like he is stretching it. I really wish this cruise left on a Sat. for us. We tried to make it work:confused3

Instead we have decided to go to DL for the D23 convention. I hope you all have an amazing time...which I am sure you will. Hopefully we will get to do this one day soon. I look forward to all of the TR's :grouphug:

oh no....Mary and Dan we will miss you.

It was great getting to know you last year in the Med. Shari still talks about the Blue Grotto excursion in Malta when we shared a boat.

Have a great time with all your travels plans and who knows our paths may cross again.:goodvibes

Mary we'll miss you and Dan! Enjoy your trip to DL.

ok, if you insist:rotfl:

Do you know anything about the Coal Harbor hotel? They seem to have decent rates.

Take a look at the Train from Vancover Airpot to Downtown Vancover. You can get a pass for the day for $9 and use the busses for the rest of the day to get around Vancover. We are flying in Saturday Morning from Disneyland and D23 and this looks good to us for getting around. If you have a iphone there is an APP on iTunes called TripLink that has the schedules for Bus, SkyTrain, SeaBus, and WCE (another Train line). We are at that point in booking that only ground transportation details need to be finalized and are taking a hard look at everything that is available and this looks like it might be the way for us to go.

Everett - FYI - there is a $5 per person surcharge from the Airport to Downtown on the Sky Train.

Oh Mary, I'm sorry to hear you have to cancel. We'll miss you guys. I did notice that the D23 convention was the same weekend we were in Vancouver. I thought it was funny how the first time we're on the west coast, it's at the same time...too bad it's not closer. I can understand the stress with work that Dan is going through, I go through that too.

When I looked at the website the $9 DayPass was exempt from the $5 surcharge. Just have to figure out where the 7-11 or Pharmasaveis in the airport to purchase it.

Cheers!

Jennifer

Wendy - Jen said that the way it is listed on the Web is that if you get the $9 day pass at 7-11 inside the termanial at the airport then you don't have to pay the surcharge. Are we missing something here?:sail:

As far as I know there is no 7-11 or Pharmasave in the Airport. I've sent an email to Loraine (my Dsis) about it for you. She knows way more about the Skytrain than me. I know we bought a booklet at 7-11 for discount travel when we used it last March. I'm at the Airport at the beginning of March (we cruising the Competition) - so can also look around then.

Wendy - here is a clue as to where to look for 7-11 and Pharmasave at the Airport in March. My GateGuru on my iPhone says that they are Pre-Security Domestic Terminal Level 1.

Looks like Jen and I were replying at the same time.:sail:

Sorry to hear, but you will still have a great vacation.

=If you have a iphone there is an APP on iTunes called TripLink that has the schedules for Bus, SkyTrain, SeaBus, and WCE (another Train line).

Very interested in said iPhone app, but also interested in a way to use my iPhone in Vancouver to make use of aforementioned app without the $1 billion (pinky in cheek) "ransom".

Is the app usable without a data connection? Perhaps without realtime bus and train locators? Chicago has realtime and it works OK.

Also, can anyone recommend a source for sim cards for carrier independent iPhone usage in Vancouver? Depending on my renewal it would either be a 1st gen or 3GS. Not going to chance a gen5.

The only issue I could see with that plan is that the iPhone 4 and I'm sure a 5 if they come out with one is that they use a new micro sim car, at least in US ATT models. Those sim cards seem to be exclusive to ATT right now. I think we're just going to try to find as much free wifi as we can, and buy an international data plan like we did for Europe last summer.

Yea, I was also worried about the Edge, HPSA, HPSA+ or LTE coverage if using a gen5 iPhone. If one of the lower protocols had better coverage, or like you mention the SIM card is easier to get, then that is a good reason, and also because the old phones would be off package, and carrier-unlocked.

Looking at those world plans, I see that Dr. Evil was in fact setting the price scheme. From AT&T website:
"One 3-min YouTube video, or one 5mpx photo is a 2MB file. With roaming turned on that would be $40 per incidence. To avoid that charge, you can purchase international data. The 20 MB package is $24.99 per month, the 50 MB package is $59.99 per month, the 100 MB package is $119.99 per month, and the 200 MB package is $199.99 per month." (The same 200MB package non-roaming is $15 per month)

So thinking about downloading maps and touring information seems like it would crush the 20MB plan. Perhaps bringing a phone without the SIM card in it, and then using WiFi like you suggest is the best approach.

Unless somebody knows how to get a burn-phone SIM card for Rogers, or one of the others, that will work in an iPhone and be less than the AT&T packages.

We won't take our sim cards out. We'll just leave the phone in airplane mode with WIFI turned on. You can't access any cellular data that way. Any high use we'll make sure we're in wifi. We only plan being in vancouver for 4 nights so I'm sure the 50MB plan will be good again for those few days, though we did blow through it in the 3 days we were in Paris before our Med cruise. We know more now and now how to conserve data better now.

I haven't been on this board in ages so decided to check in and see what's hapening. I noticed that you are also from Maine. Where abouts? We are in Brunswick. Steam Boat Willie is also a Mainer.

The APP is a Free one. We are not planning at this point on using our 3G connection while in Vancouver. Figure we will see what we can pick up with free wifi.

I just check the app and trip planner does work with just wifi active. It will give you several options for getting around with time and distance.

Maine_Jennifer is our DD. We are all headed for WDW and a Disney Dream Cruise next week. While we are away I will become retired.

Good morning Everett

Congrats on the retirement. This up coming July it will be 6 yrs that I have been retired from BIW. I don't miss the place but miss the people I worked with although alot have also retired. I opted to go out at 62 and do't regret it. Nancy retired also at the same time so needless to say we have been enjoying retirement. The upcoming Alaska Cruise will be oue 6th Disney cruise since retirement.
As Nancy sais on one of her post we might have to get together and have a Maine Dis Meet ha ha before the Alaska cruise.
Nancy didn't realize that Jennifer was your DD until I told her. Jennifer had mentioned it on one of her later post.
You gus have a great weekend down in OOB
